ABERDARE POLICE COURT. On Wednesday, January 8th, Itefore Mr. R. A. Griffith (Stipen- fliary), Messrs. Frank Hodges and F. W. Mander. New Constables. Three new additions to the local Police Force, viz., Bumford Owen, W. T. Roberts and Richard Evans, were sworn in by the Clerk. Wanted to be Locked Up.—Two charges of being drunk and disorder- ly were preferred against Margaret Harwood. P.C. Oliver Hunt said that at 11.10 on the 4th inst. he was on duty in the Aberdare Police Station when he heard kicking at the door. When he opened the door the defendant rushed in, cursing and swearing, and insisted on being locked up. She was thereupon de- tained for the night. P.C. Hum- phreys said that on Jan. 6th he saw the defendant in Commercial Street. She was very drunk. There were previous convictions, and she was ordered to pay 6s. in respect of each oflence. Llwydcoed Inn's Midnight Cus- tomers.—Daniel Jones, landlord of the Miners' Arms, Llwydcoed, was charged with supplying intoxicants during prohibited hours, and »»in. J ones, David Jones (the landlord's son) and Edward Thos. James were charged with aiding and abetting. Mr. A. J. Prosser 4 Messi-6. C. and W. Kenshoie and Preiser) defend- ed.—P.S. Lew-is, Trecynon, said that on Thursday, Dec. 2f>th, from com- plaints received, he, in company with P.C. Banks, kept the Miners' Arms, Llwydcoed, under observation from 11.15 p.m. to 11.50 p.m. At 11.30 p.m they were standing out-1 side tho kitchen window. There was loud talking inside.1, and he heard one of the ni, n saving, "Come on Dai, let's have another, then I'm off." Witness saw the defendant David Jones go from the kitchen to- wards the bar. P.C. Banks then went to the bar window. Shortly afterwards witness saw David Jones return, carrying fromething in his hand, and witness saw him place it on the table. At 11.50 the defend- ant Edward Thos. James came out through the side door. P.C. Banks caught hold of him and witness asked, "What do you mean by being (411 licensed premises this time?" He replied: "I was only having a quiet drink with the son." Both officers went into the kitchen, and there were Win, Jones, David Jones and a israall boy, sitting down. Two half pint measures and a jug were on the table, a little being in each measure, and fresh froth in the jug. David Jones was questioned, and lie I replied "1 can do what 1 like in my own kitchen. You should come in through the front door." While they were talking the licensee and his wife came in, and they were told they would be reported. The land- lord said he knew nothing about it, and that he mid oniy just come back from Aberdare, adding that he did not think there was any harm in it. The officers then left the house. It was 112.30 midnight when the defendant -%Vm. Jones left.—Mr Prosser cross-examined witness at some length, after which P.C. Banks corroborated the evidence of the Sergeant. M-. Prosser addressed the Bench, stating that his defence was a denial that any beer was supplied after 9 p.m. In the course ot his remarks he said he did not know much about beer and the serv- ing of beer, but he submitted it Tvae unusual to bring r. jug of beer to the table, and also half pint glasses. Travelling Second Class with…
Travelling Second Class with Third Class Pass. Thos. Owen, Aberaman, answered two summonses for travelling on tho T.Y.R. in a second-class com- partment without paying a fare in extvwH of a third-class ticket.. Mr A. J. Prosser prosecuted for the T.V.R. Co., and Mr. W. Thomas de- fended.—J^rneat Gough said he was a special ticket examiner, residing at Cardiff. He knew the defendant, and knew that he held "a third-class traders' ticket, Treherbert to Aber- dare. On Dec. 17th he saw the de- fendant at Pontypridd, and kept him under observation. Owen travelled 3rd class to Abercynon, but got into a 2nd class there and travelled in a 2nd class compartment to Aber- aman. Defendant passed the ticket collector ut Aberaman, and did not offer any excess fare. Witness fol- lowed and asked him for his ticket. Owen searched his pockets but found he had left his pass at homo. The pass was quite in order for 3rd class travelling. Witness drew his atten- tion to the fact that he had travelled in a 2nd class compartment and in- timated to him that he would be re- portoo.-By Mr. W. Thomas: The trains were rather crowded on that day, but there was sutticient room on the train in question. Three empty couches were being attached to the Cardiff portion at Abercynon. The cxce&a fare waB 6d. Herbert Wil- liams, passenger guard, T.V.R., said ho wa« on the 5.40 ex-Cardiff train on Dec. 16th. The defendant got into a 2nd class compartment at Abewvymon on that date also, and did ait tender the excess when he passed out at Aberaman. Peter Williams, signalman, and Austin It. Morgan gave further evidence.—Mr >V. Thomas addressed tiie Court on behalf of hia client, and said that ths trains were very full on those dates. If Mi1. Owen had been asked for the excess he would have paid it willingly. The T.V.R. Co. were very punctilious in this matter. He (Mr. Thomas) knew of instances where lot class passengers had to crave! in third class compartments but no concessions were made in those oases, The Bench inflicted jDt of 10. for each offence. Prioc of Sweets. Mary Anne Howells wae charged with selling sweetmeats at more that the maxi- mum. grice, and Rees Davies witlr aiding and abetting. — Mr. W. R. Morga* prosecuted and Mr. J. D. Thomas defended. F. I. George, Food Inspector, gave evidence as to buying tweets at the shop which were flold at am excessive price.—Mr J. 1). Brothers at Variance. — George Thomas was charged with assault- ing his brother, Arthur Thomas.— Mr. Prosser (Messrs Kensnoie and Prosser) appeared tor complainant, and Mr W. Thomas for detendant.- Defendant was bound over to keep the peace.

Then his wife disappeared with the baby, without saying where she was goinii Witness obtained an extension of leave, but failed to find his wik, and .reported the matter to the police.—-Cross-examined, he did nor threaten to murder either the mini or his wifo. He offered to forgive everything if the man would pity tu- wards- the child. Defendant, 011 oath, stated that she left the chil- dren because of her husoands threats. She was not addict.ed10 drink. The father of the illegitim- ate child was Joe Soutnerley, Al- bany Street. He was a widower. The police were in the house at that time. The glasses on the table were quite dry. It was untrue to say there was some beer in them. When ergt. Lewis proceeded to take the vessels away witness reminded him that they were his property. Sergt. Lewis said: "I must show these te the superintendent. "Well," replied witness, "if your evidence is not stronger than empty vessels it isn't up to much." Cross-examined by Super. Rees: He admitted the Ser- geant called his attention to freth in the jug, but hi mess did not notioe any. He did not know where the. Sergeant had obtained the beer produced in Court.—Re-examined by Mr. Prosser: The jug was used for slops, which were given to the pigs. (Laughter.)—>Dd. Jones, the land- lord's son, was called, and swore that no drink was supplied after 9 o'clock.—James, another defend- ant f-aid he had only just been dis- charged from the Army. He was an old pal of the last witness." He "swore by Almighty God" that he did not have a drink that night. He related to the party some of his ex- periences in France. Wm. Jones gave further evidence, stating that ho was related to the landlord, and he spent a good deal of his time there. — The Bench were satisfied that drink had been supplied to Wm. Jones and to James. It was not proposed to inflict heavv penalties ?;s it was Boxing Day. With regard to Jaraos the Bench would make an J allowance in his case because he had be.'ll a way for a long time serving his country and had only just returned.
