Husband, Wife and Maid.—Separation Case. Mrs. Mary Jones, 3 Holford Street, I Aberaman, summoned her husband, Francis David Jones, for desertion. Mr A. J. Prosser (Messrs. Kenshole and Prosser) appeared for the wife, and said that the parties had been married five years and had three children. The parties lived at Gilfach Bargoed, and there had been unpleasantness for some time, owing to defendant's conduct WILil a servant girl. The wife had complain- ed to him time after time about Ills conduct, but he had refused to improve. The complainant was called, and said she now lived with her mother at 3 Holford Street. Her husband was a colliery haulier at Bargoed, earning about L3 per week. She left her hus- band on Sept. 9th. He was late in getting up that day and she told him that it was no wonder he couldn't get up in the morning because he was up till midnight with the servant girl. He then assaulted her. She told him she was going to get rid of the servant, and he replied that if she was going he was going too. Subsequently he told her (his wife) that she would have to go home to Aberaman. He thereupon left, taking the servant girl and one of the children with him. In the afternoon he returned and packed her off, adding that he was prepared to pay 10s. a week towards her. He hurried her like a dog to the station, and booked a ticket to Aberaman for her. A few days later she returned to Gilfach Bargoed with her mother. The house was then locked up. She saw him at his mother's, and he said she would have to take him before I his "betters," and that he would only have to pay 7s. 6d. a week. Mrs. Esther Thomas, 3 Holford St., Aberaman, mother of complainant, said she examined her daughter when she I came home, and found bruises on her I leg, the result of the kicks which de- fendant had given her. She went with her daughter to see defendant, who said he was not going to provide another home for his wife. Defendant gave evidence and said that his wife left on her own accord. He kept the house open for some day s after she left, but eventually lie locked the house up He had not abused his I wife at all. By Mr. Prosser: They- had kept a maid named Ena. His wife had never I complained to him of his conduct with the maid. ¡ Ena Davies, the maid above referred to, said she had heard Mrs. Jones call her husband a lazy b-, and expressed the hope that he would be brought home on a stretcher. She denied that she was up every night with defendant. She had heard Mrs. Jones charge her husband with being too familiar with her (witness).—The Bench made an order of 20s. a week, complainant to r have the custody of the youngest chdd i

Drinking After Hours. Aberaman Licensee Fined. Ralph Davies, landlord of the Lamb and Flag Hotel, Aberaman, was charged with selling intoxicating liquors at 9.20 p.m. contrary to the Liquor Control Board Order, and also with permitting liquor to be consumed on the premises. Walter Morgan, Aberaman, was sum- moned for consuming intoxicating jiquor on the premises at 9.20 ,p.m. Mr. Roberts, Pontypridd, appeared for the defence. P.C. Bennett said that in company with,P,C. Morgan he visifjed the i^amb and Flag at 9.20 on Oct. 11th. He saw a man named Walter Morgan, of 189 Cardiff Road, there, drinking from a half-pint glass measure. He asked him what he was drinking and Morgan re- plied it was beer. A soldier sat at the table close by, and an empty glass was in front of him. Witness asked him, "What is your drink?" and the soldier said "Beer." The landlord and land- lady were inside the counter, and wit-

_i Cwmbach Soldier Brothers. I On Tuesday night a largely-attended meeting was held at the Primitive Methodist Church, Cwmbach, to bid farewell to Private John S. Aubrey, an old scholar, on his departure for the front. A Bible was presented, and addressee were given by the teachers and officials. Private Aubrey is a mem- ber of the Australian contingent. A brother, who served in .Gallipoli, has been missing for twelve months.

Teify Davies was the chairman. The lecture was most interesting and edi- fying. SOAR Y.P.S. Mr. Francis Jones presided on Monday evening last. A very instructive paper on "Owain Glyndwr" was read by Mr. Tom Davies (secretary). The speaker was accorded a vote of thanks by Messrs. William Bryapt and Charles John re- spectively. Messrs. Francis Jones, Leyshon J. Lewis, and W. B. John took part in the discussion. CANTATA. —' On Wednesday and Thursday last the Hirwain Mixed Choir (conductor, Mr. G. Collier) gave renderings of the cantata, "David the Shepherd Boy," at the Victoria Hall. The proceeds were in aid of Mr. John Davies (late Attendance Officer), of Cross Street. It is with regret we chronicle the death of Miss Elizabeth Evans, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William Evans, Bryncoed, and late of Ysguborwen, which occurred on Wednesday, October 25th. The de- ceased, who was 33 years of age, was a certificated teacher at the Park Schools, but two years ago had to relinquish her duties owing to a breakdown in health. She was a faithful member of Heoly- felin Church and also a Sunday School teacher. She was highly respected by a large cirkle of friends, by whom she will be sadly missed. The interment took place at the Aberdare Cemetery on Monday amongst manifestations of deep sorrow. The officiating minister was the Rev. Cynog Williams. The hymn, "Yn y dyfroedd," was sung at the house, and at the graveside deceased's favourite hymn, "Lead, Kindly Light." The chief mourners were: Parents; Mr. William Evans, brother; Misses A. and J. We regret to record the death of Mrs. M. J. Lloyd, wife of Councillor Thomas Lloyd, of Rose. Row, who passed away on Monday evening last after a brief illness. The deceased lady was a faithful member of Bryn Seion (Cong.) Chapel, and highly re- spected in the village. The deepest sympathy is felt for the sorrowing hu&- band.

Private Myrddin Howells, son of Mr. and Mrs. Edward Howells, Griffin Inn, is with the Motor Transport at Ilsworth. His brother, Private Gwilym Howells, is with the 5th Welsh in Egypt. He joined the Army in September, 1914, and left for Egypt in January. In a letter home he states that he is alright, but the weather is terribly hot. DISCHARGED. Private William Seymour, King's Shropshire Light In- fantry, son of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Seymour, Chapel Street, has been dis- charged as the result of wounds re- ceived in France. He was blown up by a mine, and received wounds in his right side.—Private David Jones, Re- gent Street, who has been with the Welsh Guards for some time, has been discharged. He is now following his old occupation of a collier. MISSIONARY ANNIVERSARY. On Sunday the English Wesleyan Church held their Foreign Mission Anniversary. At 11 the Rev. Ernest Smith preached an inspiring sermon. At 2.30 he addressed a young people's gathering. In the evening Mr. J. Ruston, Aberdare, officiated. On Tues- day evening the Rev. William 'Perston, of India, gave an address, and dealt effectively with missionary work. Mr. W. A. Davies, Treharris, presided. 1 The precentor was Mr. William Hill. and the organist Mr. Thomas Davies. MIRACULOUS ESCAPES. Driver John Davies, attached 3rd Ambala Indian Cavalry Division, and son of Mr. and Mrs. Richard Davies, 83 Brook Street, was hbme this week from France on leave. He joined in April, 1915, and left for France in January of this year. He has been on active service for 10 months, and was on the Somme front. He took part in the fighting at Mametz Wood, Albert and Fraicourt. When in the act of carrying supplied up to Mametz Wood his horse was shot under him, and his chum was killed outright. He has had several other narrow escapes in France. He leaves to-day (Thursday) again for the front. SOCIAL. To mark the opening of Gwawr (B.)' CWMAMAN. JAY'S furniture is worth placing in vour beet rooms. DEATH. On Saturday morning last at 12 Morris Street Glennis Mary Hay, the three-year-old daughter of Private and Mrs. T. Hay, passed away. Private Tom Hay is attached to the R.A.M.C., and hat* been out in France for a considerable period. REHEARSAL. On Tuesday evening a rehearsal was held at Seion (B.) Church under the auspices of the Lower Aberdare District Baptist Tem- perance Association. The conductor was Mr. Frank Leach, Gwawr, and Mr. James John, Ynvslwyd, presided at the organ. The Rev. S. J. Leeke presided. FREE CHURCH. The Welsh churches, comprising the Cwmaman section of the Aberaman Branch of the Evangelical Free Church Union,, held a united prayer meeting at Soar Ghapel on Tuesday evening. The Rev. W. D. Morris conducted the service, when Messrs. Evan Thomas (Seion), Lewis Davies (Moriah Aman), and Thomas LI oyd (Soar) took part. Mr. John Davies was the precentor, while Mis, M. J. Owen presided at the organ. CYMDEITHAS YR IEUENCTYD. The above society commenced the work of the session on Thursday evening. Mr. David Stephens was in the chair. Papers were read by Miss Gwladys Thomas on "Williams Pantycelyn," and Mr. Isaac James Rees on "John Penry, Cefnbrith." The subjects were i dealt with ih a very able manner by i both. In the discussion which followed, Messrs. David James Evans, Benjamin J. Howells, James O. James, J. E. Rees, and the president, Rev. E. J. Owen, took part. A vote of thanks to the readers was proposed by Mr. Willie J. Evans, and seconded by Miss Edith Evans. Recently the Rev. E. J. Owen gave this society a fine treat in the form of a social tea. CYMDEITHAS Y PLANT. The weekly meeting of the above was held on Tuesday evening last at Moriah Aman Schoolroom. Mr. loan Isaac presided. Evensong was conducted by the Rev. T. J. Morgan. RECOVERING. We gladly an- nounce ihat Pte. Wm. Murphy, Royal Dublin F usiliers, is rapidly recovering from wo: mds received in the battle of Guillemont. He is at present lying in Ala ncliester. This gallant soldier is the son of Mr. Murphy, 1 Navigation St., and was wounded at the historic landing at SuYla Bay. He was invalided home from there suffering with shrapnel wounds and dysentery. OFFICER'S LETTER.-Lt. Bayliss, R.E.A., writes to Mr. Eb. Griintlis, W oodland Street, as follows: Your son, Gunner Godwin, met his death on the night of September 9th, when in action behind Trones Wood. A shell came through the roof of the gun pit, where he and his Sergeant and five other men were sleeping, killing him and the Sergt. and two of his pals. He felt no pain. He just fell asleep after a hard day's work and awoke in another world. I need hardly say that he is missed bv his officers and comrades. He is buried just behind Trones Wood." FUNERAL. The interment of the remains of Mr. George Henry Archer, 25 Howell Street, Cilfynydd, took place in Llanfabon Cemetery on Monday afternoon. Deceased had many con- nections in Mountain Ash, and had lived here for some time. He was 82 years of age. The mourners were: Messrs. George, John, Edwin, William, Charles, Frederick, Norman, and Bertie Archer, all of Mountain Ash; Frank Gordon, Cefnpennar; Percy Moore, Caerphilly; Willie and Reggie Archer, grandsons. Deceased was an old veteran of the Crimean war, and held rank as chief gunner's mate on H.M.S. Blen- heim in the Black Sea. He saw active service at the seige of Sebastopol, and received the medal for that action. Later he held rank as instructor in the British Naval Reserve, and was pro- moted Chief Officer of the Coastguard Service. He retired from duty in 1879.

HOME FROM THE FIRING LINE. —On Monday Victoria Street was en fete to welcome home Lance-Corporal 1 rederiek George Woodland, who has just been discharged from a military hospital in Kent. He was wounded at Somme. He is 21 rs of age. He joined on September 3rd, 1914, and was drafted out in August, 1915. His father is also serving with the A.S.C. in France. His home is at 11 Victoria Street. WEDDTNG. On Saturday last a pretty but quiet wedding took place at the Merthyr Register Office. The parties were Miss Eliza Smith, second daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William Smith, of 23 Victoria Street, Miskin, and Air. Frederick Worse, son of the .Iilt¡> Mr. and Mrs. Worse, of 31 Glan HorHl, Aberdare. The bride, who was attired tastefully in a navy blue costume with hat to match, was accom- panied by Miss Blender as bridesmaid, who was similarly attired. The bride was given away by her father, whilst Mr. Edward Smith, brother of bride, was best man. A sumpttfous wedding breakfast had been prepared at the bride's parents' home. INTERMENT. — On Monday last the funeral of Mr. David John Davies, aged 29 years, the seconds son of Mr. David Davies, of 47 Victoria Street, took place at Caegarw Cemetery. The Vicar of Miskin officiated. The chief mourners were: Father; Miss Mary Davies, sister; Stephen and Willie Davies, brothers; Tom and Maria Davies, brother and sister-in-law; Mr. and Mrs. T. PENRHI WCEIBER. DON'T delay, but call on JAY. SOLDIER'S RETURN. Gunner Albert Josey, of the R.G.A., whose home is at 75 Park Street, has returned home from the firing line. Gunner Josey has been on active service almost since the outbreak of war. Previously he was employed at Messrs. Nixon's. HERMON (C.M.). On Sunday- evening last at Hermon the Rev. D. Jones, M.A., pastor, conducted a-u impressive memorial service in respect of the late M, r. William Williams, a faithful member of the church. OH Thursday, October 26th, at Christ- church, Newport, Sapper John Hughes, Royal Engineers, 34 Station Terrace, Penrhiwceiber, and Miss Hannah Sherborne, 3 Poole Cottages, Langstone, near Newport, were united in holy matrimony, the Rev. E. A. Thorne. Vicar, officiating. The bride was prettily attired in a grey costume and a velvet hat, trimmed with ofltriek plumes, and was accompanied by Mrs. James Thomas, sister of bridegroom. She was given away by her father. Mr- R. Thomas, brother-in-law of bride- groom, acted as best man. There were also present: -Mrs. J. Sherborne, mother of bride; Misses Mary Sher- borne and Annie Sherborne, sisters. The wedding breakfast was partaken of at the home of the bride's parents. Sapper J. Hughes is stationed at Sandwich, Kent. DEATH AND INTERMENT. On Friday last the death took place very suddenly of Mr. William Lloyd, agefl 39 years, who resided with his sister, Mrs. Evan Davies, of 8 Church Street. It was twelve months to the day of his death that his respected mother was buried. Deceased had resided in Pen- rhiwceiber from childhood. He was em- ployed at the Penrikyber Colliery as an engineman for many years. The family are highly esteemed, and Mr. Lloyd'* death is mourned by a large number in the district. He leaves two sisters and two brothers, to whom we extend our sympathy. The funeral took place on Thursday last at Caegarw Cemetery, the Rev. D. Jones, M.A., officiating. The principal mourners were:—Mr. and Mrs. D. Keen, sister; Mr. and Mrs. Evan Davies, sister; Messrs. Evan and ? David John Lloyd, brothers; Tom and David William Keen, nephews; Job* Jones and William Griffiths, uncles; David Lloyd and Daniel Morgan, cousins; Miss Annie Griffiths, niece. ABERCYNON. DON'T delay, but call on JAY. PULPIT. On Sunday the pulpit of Tabernacle C.M. Chapel was occupied by the Rev. D. Harris Williams, D.D-- Newport. DISCHARGED. Private Jenkm Reilly, A.S.C., has returned home from France discharged. He joined at the outbreak of war, and had been in the thick of the fighting in France. Private Reilly was wounded twice whilst out there. KILLED IN ACTION. Corporal H Brace, who, prior to enlisting two years ago, was employed as master haulier at the Abercynon Colliery, i now officially reported killed in action on the 10th July. Corporal Brace was formerly reported missing. He went out to France in November, 1915. He resided at Heol Fawr, Nelson. SERA ICES. — On Saturday evening- Sunday, and Monday the annual preaching services of Mynydd Seion (Cong.) took place, when sermons were delivered by the Rev. R. Hugh Davies, B.A., Cwmbach, and the Rev. Wynne Lewis. Clydach Vale. The Rev. T- Watcyn Jones, pastor, conducted the services. Miss Esther Scott presided at the organ. ARMY PUDDING FUND. Last week the scholars attending Carnetowo Schools brought with them to school vegetables and fruit, the sale of which realised the following sums:—Mixed Department, J03 2s. 4d.; Infants' De- partment, < £ 1 6s. 6d. The money wa* forwarded to the Army Christmas Pudding Fund. The 'arrangements were in the hands of Mr. T. R. Wiglp.r and Miss E. Davies, head teachers. BALLOT. There was a long dispute about the correct time, and wit- ness eventually went to the Post Office to verify his watch, according to which it was 9.20 when he entered the house. P.C..Morgan corroborated, and added that while the last witness was taking Walter Morgan's name, Mrs. Davies took a glass away from another man. She made a statement that the glass was a "dead one it having been or- dered by a man who left the house with- out drinking it. The defendant was called, and said he was employed as manager of the pub- lic house. When the police came in lie was picking up empty glasses. They asked him the time and he (witness) re- plipd: "My watch is a bit dilapidated like myself." The time according to the watch was about 4 o'clock. He timed the clock according to the Aber- aman Station clock. A soldier named Gentle sat near Morgan. By Super. Kees Witness went down to the station every day to obtain the correct time. He had plenty of leisure now. (Laughter.) Mrs. Davies, the landlord's wife, said that Morgan came in about 8.50, and had two half-pints. He called for a third, but she refused, inasmuch as it was then two minutes to 9. About that time she shouted Stop tap." Mor- gan's glass was empty when the police came in, and she could not understand why they alleged there was beer in it. Thos. Gentle, 42 Blaennantygroes, Cwmbach, deposed to entering the Lamb and Flag at 8.45. He had been in the Hall. Morgan was speaking to his (witness') son, who was a soldier. It was 9.3 when the police came in. Walter Morgan, the other defendant, said he entered the house at 8.45. His glass was empty when the police came in. Albert Teal, Commerce Place, Aber- aman, gave further evidence for the defence. The Stipendiary said the Bench were of opinion that the statements made by the defence were a mass of obvious falsehoods. If Morgan's glass was empty it was difficult to understand why the officer had singled out his glass amongst a dozen others. The landlord would be fined t5 and Morgan 40s.
