Lander, who came third in the ballot for a new Clerk at the Mountain Ash Council meeting on Tuesday, was a candidate for the Aberdare Council ( lerkship 18 months ago, when he came second, and ran the present Clerk, Mr D. Llewellyn Griffiths, very close; He is a native of the country above the Tweed, a keen man, and was a great favourite with some of the Aberdare Councillors at the time. SOUTH WALES MUSICAL FESII- VAL.—A perusal of the balance sheet (just issued) of the above shows that. the balance of receipts over expendi- ture, £110 15s., has been handed to the treasurer of the Mountain Ash Cot. ta"e Hospital. The collieries purchased £ 209 worth of tickets, and Mr W. Peters and others disposed of £ 138 worth. Not only does the public find it cosy, but they get a real first-class performance at popular prices. This week the Togas top the bill and right worthily. Their wire- walking is something to make you gasp. The Two Dollars give a laughable sketch, which is warmly applauded. A very pretty weaaing took place at Bethlehem Welsh C.M. Church on Wednesday morning. The Rev. W. J. Evans, the newly-appointed pastor to Bethlehem, came specially from Bwlch to perform the ceremony. The bride was prettily attired \n a grey cord costume, and wore a grev silk hat with grey plumes. She was > given away by Air Ebenezer Jones, her brother-in- law. The best man was Mr John Hughes, cousin of the bridegroom. The bridesmaids were: Miss Lizzie Francis, Merthyr, and Miss Margaret Ann Thomas, Porth. The former wore a dove colour costume and Wedgewood blue hat, and the latter a navy whip- cord costume and cerise hat. Ihe bodv was taken to Mountain Ash G.W.R. Station, and conveyed by rail to Aberystwyth, where the interment took place. The mourners- were: The husband; Miss Jones, sister; William H. Evans, nephew; Mr John H. Evans, brother-in-law, and Mrs Evans, sister- in-law. The deceased was a faithful member of Moriah C.M. Chapel, Mis- kin. The Rev. R. Gwmryn Jones officiated. ABERCYNON. FOOTBALL. The Abercynon team were on Saturday defeated at home by the Merthyr Vale League players to the tune of 4 goals to nil. SERVICES. On Saturday night, Sunday, and Monday the anniversary preaching services of Nazareth Welsh Baptist Chapel took place. There were good attendances at each. service, and excellent sermons were preached by the Revs. T. Idwal Jones, Llwynypia, and E. Mitchell, Ponkey, Ruabon. B.S.P. A meeting was held at the Lesser Hall on Thursday evening under the auspices of the British Social- ist Party, when Mr T. Kennedy, the prospective Parliamentary candidate for Rochdale, delivered an address on the deportation of the South African Labour Leaders. The chairman was Mr .A. Reckman. CRUELTY CHARGE. — Thomas Thomas, haulier, Abercynon, was charged at Bargoed on Friday with cruelly overloading two horses at y stral Mynach. Police constable Mourton said the horses were attached to a furniture van, which was heavily laden, and they were unable to move it. Defendant was beating the shaft horse. i-Polich-sergeant W. H. Williams corro- borated, and defendant was fined .£1. SOCIAL. On Wednesday evening a social tea was held by the English Congregational Church Choir. The tables were presided over by Mrs W. Morgan. Mrs Price, Mrs T. Morgan, Mrs Lewie. Mrs Dennis, Mrs Button, Miss Ijewis, Miss Martin, and Miss Jones. After the tea Mr W. Wilton, choirmaster, on behalf of the choir, presented Mrs Martin Evans, late or- ganist of the choir, with a silver cake dish, suitably inscribed. Solos were rendered by Miss S. A. Thomas and Mr W. D. Edwards. Addresses were given by Messrs T. Joy, P. Edwards, and Mrs T. Morgan. Mr Martin Evans, on behalf of Mrs Evans. thanked the choir members for their kindness. The Rev. Morgan Jenkins, pastor, pre- sided, and the organist was Mr Bert Wilton.

YNYSYBWL. TABEnNACLE M.I.S. On Friday evening last two excellent papers were given by Misses Mary Jenkins on &ther," and Margaret Lloyd on Miriam." The Rev. A. Jotieis, B.A., who presided, and Councillor James Evans and Mr R. A. Thomas spoke in appreciative terms of both papers. ZION Y.P.U. Mr H. J. Davies gave a very interesting paper on The Wit and Humour of Peter Mackenzie on Friday evening last. Mr D. J. Williams contributed a recitation, and Mrs W. oosnani, a solo. REHEARSAL. — On Monday evening the children of Ynysboeth, Abercynon, and Ynysybwl C.M. Churches attended a rehearsal in connection with the sing- ing festival to be held at Abercynon on Easter Tuesday. Settlement Arrived At. lu the Chancery Division of the High Court of Justice last week, Mr Justice Joyce resumed the hearing of the case or the trustees of the Abercynon Work- men s Hall v. the Ocean Coal Co., Ltd., which was an action for an injunction and damages. Plaintiffs alleged that the working of the defendants' six-foot seam at Abercynon was causing a sub- sidence of the surface resulting in cracks appearing in their building and general damage. After a prolonged in- terview between counsel and the parties they eventually agreed to a settlement t° stay proceedings, which stay would l)a-rt of the schedule of the order. Ihe following are the terms of settle- f^^t(1) Tlie defendant company is to be at liberty to work all seams under and in the neighbourhood of the Work- men's Hall. (2) Defendants to pay laO for damage to date, which shall be forthwith expended on making good such damage. (3) Defendants agree to make good within reasonable time anv damage to plaintiffs building which may hereafter occur in consequence of settle- ment or subsidence of the building, but without liability on their part to restore the original level. (4) Plaintiffs to give notice to defendants of any sign or in- dication of any damage to plaintiffs ouikhng. such notice to be given forth- with after damage being first observed. (o) Defendants to be at liberty at all reasonable times on giving three days notice or in case of urgency without notice to inspect the plaintiffs buildinn- and to open and examine foundations, but shall forthwith make good any ex- cavations opened. STATION FOR TYNTETOWN. Mr Clement Edwards yesterday (Wed- nesday) had over an hour's interview with the representatives of the Taff Vale Railway in reference to the "block" which the hon. member had placed on the Taff Bill. Eventually agree- ment was reached to lift the block, and let the Bill go for second reading. It is understood the company has agreed to experimental workmen's trains at Ynysboeth, and the two places—Tynte- town and Ynysboeth—are to agree where a station shall be placed.

| ABERCYNON POLICE COURT. Thursday, March 12th. Before Col. M. Morgan (chairman). Capt. G. A. Evans and Councillor E. Morris. T-7-R- EMPLOYEE'S OFFENCE.— Maldwyn Thomas Morris, now of Kep- pock St., Cardiff, 22 years of age, was summoned for stealing 4d., the monev of his employers, the T.V.R. Co. Mr. Ingledew, Cardiff, said that owing to suspicion a test was conducted at Aber- cynon re payment of excess fares. Two persons were sent to Abercynon, who paid 4d. each excess fares to defendant. One of the amounts was paid over by defendant, but the other 4d. was em- bezzled by him, and it was in respect of this latter amount that the defend- ant was now charged.—Albert Church- ill, stationmaster at Abercynon, de- posed that defendant was a ticket col- lector under his charge at Abercynon. W itness produced the accounts, and showed that a certain excess fare had not been accounted for on Jan. 24th.— Defendant denied that he had collected the ticket in question or received the money. Harold Windham Chivers, clerk, Whitchurch, said he booked a ticket, Llandaff to Pontypridd, on Jan. 24th. On arrival at Abercynon he gave up that ticket to defendant and paid him 4d., the excess fare. Defendant did not offer him a receipt.—Defend- ant: He never asked me for a receipt, and I don't know where his ticket went i to. I didn't get it.—T. Jones, Cardiff, a clerk, gave similar evidence, but in his case the money was accounted for.- Edward Bennett, booking clerk at Abercynon, gave further evidence, and detendant was fined 40s. and costs.
