IABERDARE'S CRY FOR LIGHT.
ABERDARE'S CRY FOR LIGHT. IN another column a correspondent who signs himself A victim" refers to the dangerous state of our local streets on busy nights, and mentions the peril that the victims of a brake accident were subjected to when ambulanced home through the dark thoroughfares of, Aber- dare and Aberaium in the congested traffic of a Saturday night. Our corres- pondent says," I t is little short of a scandal that the lives of the general public should be placed in so much peril by the false economy of a few." This is just what we have saidyp-ar after year when we have seen our streets plunged into utter darkness every night for several weeks in order to save a few thousand feet or gas I The men ot light and leading on the Aberdare Coun- cil appear to take the matter of infantile mortality very much to heart. They will convince us of their siric(-rity wh,-ti they will take a little interest in the pro- tection of adult life and limb as well. It is well known that our unlit streets have been responsible for several accid- ents and some fatalities. The munici- pal fathers of Aberdare save gas at the expense of losing human lives. Let one of ou Councillors take a walk from the top of Trecynon to the bottom of Aber- aman on any Saturday or Monday night, and if he survives the perils of the journey, we feel certain that he will be- come a convert to the policy we have vainly advocated for years and years, viz. the lighting of our streets in sum- mer as well as in winter. Aberdare has ere now been reproached for placing traction before housing. And surely this cheese-paring policy of saving gas at the risk of danger to life and limb, is also a subject of just reproach. Ye worthy Councillors, give up this gnat-straining and camel-swallowing practice, and let there be light.
A MODEL INSTITUTE.
A MODEL INSTITUTE. THE Aberaman Institute was opened on Monday. It was a great day and a great deed. Spiritual salvation may come through the churches, but the teuiporal salvation of the workers comes through the institutes that are now springing up in-our industrial districts. We often hear of men who are epoclr- makers. But in these modern days it is not individuals so much as institutions that make epochs and create history. We have no doubt that the historian of the future will trace an improvement in the social conditions of Aberaman to the establishment of this working m&n's university in the place. The utility and versatility of this magnificent building is wonderful. Here we have under one roof a theatre and a lecture hall, a library and news room, and rooms with billiards and baths in thdD. Also lava, tories, games rooms and committee rooms galore. Acaommodation is provid- ed for veteran workers to pass away the too abundant leisure which retirement brings, and which, following a career of activity, is oftentimes found somewhat irksome. And further—to mark the advance towards the emancipation of woman—we find a novelty in'the way of a room for ladies. Possessing such maniiold facilities for the pursuit of knowledge and pleasure Aberaman is now well blessed. It is seldom we come across an institute that caters so lavishly and in such an all-round manner. Physical, intellectual and social needs are considered and provided for. For "all these privileges the blessings of a grateful community are showered on the committee of the Aberaman Institute.
iNew Discovery arouses Wonder.
New Discovery arouses Wonder. London, Wednesday. Since its recent discovery, Cadunn the new skin remedy, has by its itiarvellous cures of eczema, and other distressing skin diseases, surpassed the most sanguine expectations of the distinguished chemist who gave it to the world, and has awakened great interest among skin specialists. It is a powerful antiseptic that destroys the disease-producing germs, allays inflam- mation, and starts the healing process immediately. Thousands of gratified patients testify to its wonderful curative power. A single night's application will often completely eradicate pimples, eiuptions, blackheads, blotches, rash, etc. The terrible itching which accompanies eczema stops at once while the disease itself and others of kindred nature vield readily to the treatment, and are quickly cured. Cadum is sold at 6d and Is. by Boots, Ltd, and all Chemists.
- Aberdare Miners' Meeting
Aberdare Miners' Meeting Possible Split with M.F.G.B.- Change in Leaders. At the monthly meeting of the Aberdare miners held on Tuesday it was reported that the ballot in reference to the out-of-work tund showed a smaU majority against paying the double contribution suggested by the Executive Committee. The agent, Mr Stanton, said tha.t he proposed to bring before the Central Executive at its next meet- ing a proposal to take further general action in this matter, which will have a more beneficial effect and reverse the vote already given, which he feared not only in Aberdare but also in other parts of the coalfield was against adopting the proposal passed by the South Wales Federation. He had no doubt that the ballot was a cowards' and sneaks' refuge, and that if the members had been asked to vote by show of :hands, tnoIL-everse .h.J would have taken place. He was J therefore determined that he would 1 open this question at the next meeting j of the executive and have it dealt with in another way. Dealing with the crisis in the coal ) trade. VIr Stanton said that t'iey were î all anxious for an honourable peace, r but they should not cease for one moment to prepare for the most strenu- ous resistance nationally against the tyrannous methods of the South Wales empiON ers He rather feared that certain well- ki Ovvn figure-head« in the Federation the peace-ab-any-price men—w >uld be inclined to some wretched eOlllpromise" but he spoke with a knowledge of facts when he said that the masses in the South Wftles coalfield would not again be trifled with, an d that if the j Federation of Great Biitam tailed to fulfil its obligation and substantiate its own policy and principles of acting. unitedly and liatiolijil y, I)e, for onet ) would advocate a dissolution of partner- ship and stare a united aud progressive f Wales alone 1 Mr Stanton concluded. G,-eat changes are likely to take place within the rank, of the South Wales miners leader, at no distant period, A newer stronger, and more healthy movement will take the place of the go-e isy, slip- shod, peace-at-any-priee policy of the ti. Mr Stanton reported that the negoti- ations were being continued with regard' to thtJ Bwllfèlo :0. ii, ¡Llld h,J hop,'(1 tner'" I was every chance of an early settlement of the disputes. In reference to the' disputes, at the Ya d and U*'d Seams at Cwmaman the men in the Ked Seam would in all probibility come out at the I end of the m mth. 'I!tie dt,,pule ii, the, Yard Seaiu was now in abeyance pending the meeting of Messrs D Watts Morgan- and T. Griffiths in reference to the little stone question in the same seam in the Powell Duffiyii Compa i.y's colliery. As to the question of the night men, the dismissal of the workmen atitt other- que-tions at the Lower Duffryn Colliery would come before the Joint Conciliation Hoard on Monday next. A letter f 0111 the management of the Blaengwawr Level intimated that they were prepared to restai t the level, but there must be a modification of the price list, otherwise it would be impossible for thelll to carry on the colliery at a. profh. and ill t u ture the management musb have the right to rule. They would give employment to the old workmen and others who applied for work The matter was left in the agent's hands. A letter was read from the comtnit ee of the Dyllas Colliery, Llwydcoed, where work was restarted alter a six months' strike, thanking the agent for the manner in whicn he had hrougni about a settlement of the dispute. Almost immediately after the letter was read a deputation from the DyllaS Colliery arrived at the meeting and" alleged that Mr Beutham was not carrying out the arrangements arrived at. The meeting authorised the ageufe to wrtte to illr BetiLliaia iniistiti-, up in his fulfilment of the terms of settlement, fading which the agent was empowered to bring the men out again. M.

Myself, my wife, and my wife's father and mother weie all injured more or less in the unfortunate brake accident- in Aberdare on Saturday nicht last. My wife, whose back is seriously injured* was conveyed home on an ambulance to Aberaman through a dense crowd of people and enormous traffic, as anyone can testify who was there. The route was brilliantly (?) ligitteci by a ama-lt lamp carried in front. I think it is little short of a scandal that the lives of the general public should he placed in so much peril by the false economy of a few. And all for the saving of a few thcusand feet of gas. It is ha rdhr nfe to travel the road at the best of'times owning to the uneven pavements. Hoping this will go some little wny to open the eyes of the public to what is without doubt a great danger.—1 remain, A VICTIM.
