THE NEW TURKISH BVrHS, CHARLES…
THE NEW TURKISH BVrHS, CHARLES STUEET, CARDIFF. Mr Jarvis, the med'cf.i.1 g..IvnnLst:,wh. cunie time .since successfully introduced the electro- chetnical baths into Catditi, has recently added to them Turkish baths, up..n a principle hitherto uu- I- rown in tite locaJity. They arc like the electro- chjjnical baths, di.'tded into first, second, and third classes. Thoflrst-clas.s Turkish bath« are fitted up in a style not usually found in .sucli the baths and coolinr. rooms being provided with all the comforts of a, gentleman's private residence, and as these baths have now become a.n established institution, gentlemen who atlon(I have their articles of the to'det locked up in separate drawers, the key of which iskeptbythenif.elves. Thasystemforsupplying the baths with water is c-;ecUent, and tanks are placed in connection with them capable cf holding 500 gallons of hot and cold water. Attached to the Tnrkih Lath is a ¡,:hampooing roüm, on a ncw and very novel pri')'(-.p!e. Th.'patient stands cna.slabsn'r- rounded by more than a hundred jets, through w hich water is Fjcnt with considerable force, the temperature varying' from 100 degrees to cold, but the of temperature, which is superintended by Mr Jar vis, is so gradual that the patient does not perceive it. Mr Jarvis is a gentleman who has made the question of tne"bath''astudy, and the electro-chc'mical bath has, under his hands, been found to give relief in many cases when relief could not be obtained from other sources. He also personally superintends the Turkish bath on gentlemen's days, and has a properly qurditied assistant for ladies. Since the neY.' baths in Charles-street have been opened tli-v ha.n been ¡Ütcnlkd by large numbers of and gentlemen, who find in them everything' they can desire, and the increased demand for these baths has induced him to extend his premises and double the accommodation he had formerly, ,hilL) the opening of the ne\v baths enabled him to adopt every improvement which has been intro- t duced in the establishments of the kind In the ] Jl 1\11' Janis COil- siderable skiil, probably derived from his long expcrienee, and the improvements introduced by him would commend themselves to every visitor.

From the RELiGloc.s TRACT SOCIETY (56, Pater- noster-row) we have Leisure Hour," which will bo particularly interesting this time on account of its article on the British Association at York," containing an account of its origin. Besides tins there are very good articl&s on York and its Historical Associations," and on "Mr Speaker; the "Boy's Own Paper," in which a serie;; of Cricket Homilies" is begun by F. The "Private Secretary" finishes, but there is a, very good article on Eleetra'' which goes v. ry deeply into the subject. We are sorry to see, however, th:it the article on"The Land Bill in the Lords,"treats of the subject very unfairly, and lJlngs charge,, agaimt the Liberals, without attempting to prove them. MKMOIRS OF Sm WALT.*I.' Lt SCOTT," by J. G. Lockhart (Cha,ndoa Classics, F. Warno and Co., Bedford-street, Strand). It is often said, and with much truth, th:.t SIr W alter Scott's life was as much a, romance as any of his immortal novels. We believe that we can safely assert that no author ha,s ever lived whose memoirs can be read with as real interest M his. Page after page of his brilliant career seems to succeed more and more in enchanting the reader, nnd impressing him with the real greatness of the subject. ? Accordingly there h.tvs been many lives of Scott issued to the world, but none are so com- plete, or have been so much admired, as that of Lockhart. Being Scott's son-in-law, he was placed in a better position than any other writer could be. Me was intimately acquainted with his subject, und had all his letters and personal writings; of which he has made a very good u.-e. He has presented to the v.'orld a book which can- not fail to make its way wherever it goes. It is interspersed from beginning to end with charac- teristic anecdotes and pleasant recollections, which never fail to amuse or interest the reader. The new edition lJBfnre our notice is, of course, in an abridged form. The first edition consisted of seven large volumes, and consequently beyond the roach of many. Nothing, however, of real interest has been left out, and we can well recom- mend it to all as one of the mo:-t interesting books they can get. Itisinapleasingform, andwell worthy of the preceding' volumes of the Chandos Classics.

UTILIZATION OF THE TOWN REFUSE…
UTILIZATION OF THE TOWN REFUSE AT CARDIFF. The Health Committee of the Cardiff Corpora- tion have for some time had under their considera- tion the scheme of Alderman Winstoiie for the 10 utilization of the refuse collected from houses of Cardiff by the scavengers. At some of the large towns in the country this is done to a considerable extent, the result being a large reduction in the charge for the scavenging of the town, arising from the sale of material selected from the refuse aftorcollcction. Muchofthisrefuseis found to consi.-it of bones, old scrap iron, rags, etc., which r.re sorted by persons employed for the purpose, and afterwards sold to dealers in marine stores. The health committee had yesterday an interview v. ith Mr J. S. Corbett, and leased from the Mar- quis of Bute a piece of land, about three-quarters of a.n acre in extent, near the Old DumbaIIs." The terms agreed upon were Is. per yard, and the annual rent of the land will be about E15. On this will be deposited the whole of the refuse from the dust carts, and persons will bo employed to turn it over, collecting in heaps, rags, bones, iron, etc.. to be disposed of to the marine store dealers. The committee were much pleased with the ready manner in which Mr Corbett met them, aud the very reasonable terms on which lie offered to lea-fie the land, and provide even a larger area of ground for the purpose should it he required. The scheme is one which Alderman Winstono laid be- fore the corporation some years since, but the project was then put aside as impracticable.

FATAL FIRE IN PARIS. -_--.------.---
FATAL FIRE IN PARIS. EXCITING SCENES. GALLANT RESCUES. The fire on Sunday night in the Hue Port Mahon, which broke out in aladics' outfittiii, establislnnent, was caused by the negligence of the shopkeeper, MdIIe. Boulet, who left on the counter a lighted lamp. rre.suma.bly some light object was cauglit in the draught and blown on to the name. The whole of the ground floor must have been on fire before the alarm was given. It was then too late for the inhabitants of the other stories to run downstairs. Five men showed groat iutrepedity in ascending to the window-! and saving lives. Nevertheless many persons were burned to death. The calcined remains of a M. Duvivier have been found on the fifth noor. A MdIIe Leroycr, who had on entering from a walk dis- covered the nre, ran upstairs to alarm her mother, who had gone to bed, and brought her down to the next noor, where eventually a fire mansavedher. The smoke while the old lady was being carried down an escape-ladder, forced MdDc. Leroyer to go up to her own room. Taking an heroic resolution, she tore up sheets, knotted them together, and fastening them as a rope to the iron window guard began to descend. The numerous spectators in the street looked on with ba,ted breath. When she was half way down a knot undid, and she fell. Her skull was smashed. A young man, who rushed forward to break her fall, was overborne by her weight, and had his arms broken. In hanging to a cord which he had thrown out of an upper story to save himself and his mother, a vintner had his handout fearfully, but he hung on still and succeeded. A fireman, who had carried four women from the sixth noor, ascended for others. The floor giving way under him, he got out of a, window on the fifth noor. Being pursued by the flamcs, and seeing a at a pro- jecting angle, he jumped at it and caught it. He hung on for five or six minutes, when he was rescued. Another volunteered to rush into the burning house and isolate the gas meter. He got his comrades to souse him first, and returned only ahttleburnedandscaldcd. The f!re broke out at half-pastten. Inan hour the hou-.owasamcre shell.
THE ?HIGHLANDS OF SCOTLAND.
THE ?HIGHLANDS OF SCOTLAND. We arc glad to observe that Mr M. J. B. Baddeley 1m: added a second voli-iiiie to his "Through Guide Series." Having done the Lake District well, he has been tempted to give to the pedestrian and tourist "The Highlands of Scot- land" (London Dulau and Co.), illustrated by 29 maps and plans executed by Mr Bartholomev?. Tile maps alone are so trustworthy that a, person of ordinary intelligence might let himself loose anywhere in the Highlands of Scotland without much risk of going astray, but the text is a valu- b!e comment on the maps and companion to tb? much risk of going astray, but the text is a valu- ble comment on the maps and companion to the traveller. We would recommend not only a chieftain," but all others who may be to the bound," to put into his knapsack a copy of this, the most accurate, most instructive, and most useful book he can get hold of as a guide. It ts especially adapted for mountainous districts. While referring to Scotland we must say a, word for Mr D. Machrayno's Royal Route," Glasgow to the Highlands, containing excellent lithographs of some of the finest scenery visited by those who betake themselves to the Caledonian Canal. The Information, too, is ample and practical.
