I The feature of the Money Market is a recovery of 2 in the American Enxchange,and there is, consequently, for the moment less probability of gold going to America. As a fair supply of capital was offering, the demand for both loans and discounts was only moderate. Three months' Bills were takenat 11 to 2, and short advances were granted at H per cent. V The Bank rate remains at 21 per cent. The Spanish and Italian Exchanges are weaker. The Stock Exchange continues quiet in tone, but with an undoubted favourable tendency. Fcrci^a stocks still receive sup- port from abroad, and American and Canadian Railways are again decidedly strong, but there is not much doing in Home Securities. However, were business to be- come at all animated, a strong upward movement would in all probability at once commence. The Bank Return shows the usual changes incidental to the season. Holidays and pre- parations for harvest have caused an increase of £ 869,000 in note circulation, and a decrease of £ 391,000 in bullion. The re- serve is £ 1,237,000 less, and the proportion to liabilities stands at 50 '93, against 52 -50 last week. Private deposits show a loss of £ 1,400,000. U J L R\+~ •> J J? ANOTHER NEW STEADIER EOR CARDIFF. The Earl of Rosebery, a fine iron screw steamer of about 1,000 tons, for Messrs Martin and Mar- quaiid, of Cardiff, was launched by Messrs Alex. Stephen aud Sons, at Lintbouse, on Wednesday forenoon. This steamer ha.4 been built to class 100 Al at Lloyd's,, under special survey. She has provision for water ballast on the biacket prin- ciple. Her engines are of the most improved construction, with cylinders 28 and 52 inches diam. by 38 inches stroke, ard working pressure of 75lbs. The vessel, which is intended for the iron o;e and general trades, was named by luis Martin, wife of the man iging owner.

Prices are unaltered, but t, feeling pievails very generally that they will be fii\ner as the eud of the year ap- f proaches. The weajher has been very favourable for ah the operations connected with the trade of this poit. The arrivals during ti:e week have agiiu been exceptionally numerous and of ex- cellent capacity. On the Tuesday following the Bank holiday, vessels equal to carrying some 50,000 tons were entered out for loading at the Custom-hotise. I In the freight market orders are moderately plentiful, rfnd a fair amount of chartering in different directions has been done during the week, the supply of both steam and sailing tonnage being pretty good, Fr-eucli coal freights keep very low. Quotations outwards for Spain are steady, and there are signs of improvement in the employment homewards from the Spanish ore potts, both in the north of the peninsula and in the Mediterranean. The coal freights offering here for Italian ports are easier. There is a fair demand for tonnage for Malta Mid Port Said, but the Gibraltar rate has been lower than usual, with very little demaud. Coal quotations for the higher Mediterranean ports and Black Sea are steady, but the homeward business thence is still very unremunerative. Outward freights with coal to the East Indies are steady, with very little iftquiry just now. There is also a lull in the homeward chartering in this direction. The co 1 freights for West Indian ports are steady, but as yet there is not much doing, the season scarcely being open yet. Good employment home- wards, is obtainable in this quarter. Quotations for Brazilian and lliver Plate norts keep steady. No transactions in transatlantic steam chartering have been reported d ring the week. Neither is there much doing at the moment in iron charters for the United States, There is some iron in the 111 arket for New Yoik, but at a very low freight. The homeward chartering from the States ktepa stendy. Exports for tne ii eek-98.049 tons of coal, 3,210 tons of patent fuel, 927 tons of iron, and 483 tons of coke. Entiles outwatds of vessels arrived for loading during the week equivalent to some 110,000 tons capacity. Imports for the week-6,818 tons of iron ore from Spain, and 2,226 tons of iron ore from other sources. The market being overstooked, the ar. rivals of pitwood have been below the average, amounting to only 1,340 tons.

NEWPORT TRADE REPORT. SPECIAL REPORT FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT. NEWPORT, Thursday Night.—Trade has been somewhat more activity generally in business dur- ing the past week, and coal and iron shipments have showed more briskness. This, considering that Monday was partly a holiday, is encouraging, and, coupled with the fact of the withdraw al of the notices at the ironworks, goes somewhat to prove that the trade is gradually improving. It is to be hoped that it will ba aHowed to do so without any of the feverish excitement caused some months ago by the action of the speculators. Though this speculation as regarded the iron trade did not take place in this district to any extent, the evil lesults of the reaction caused by it were felt in this neighbourhood. There is little doubt that with the consumption at the ironworks the quantities sent off by rail irom the collieries to other ports, and for inland consumption, added to the exports from South Wales, a fair market will lossibly be found for the ccal raised during the next six mouths. It is, however, doubtful if any great increase in prices is likely to take place. In the iron trade firmness continues, and, as before mentioned, the notices of termination of contracts have been withdrawn. The different works are fairly busy, and the prospects seem good f. r the future. Shipments of rails have proceeded actively, and the quantities coming from the works are considerable. Imports.—The quantities of iron ore arriving are about equal to the requirements of the works, and there is no excessive delay in discharging. pitwood.-The consumption is fair, and docks are not increasing. Prices are still low, but there is more firn,ness in the demand. The quantity of timber and deals arriving is more than for some time past at this season of the year, and the timber trade will probably be better than for the last few years. Freights.—There is little movement to note. Thfinquityisaboutthesame. More firmness is visible in fome directions, particularly from Bilbao, notwithstanding the large steam tonnage now engag ed in that trade. One boat, the Cyfaithfa, of Cardiff, delivered in the Alexandra. Docks last week 1,7S0 tons.

NORTH OF ENGLAND REPORT. [SPECIAL REPORT FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.] MIDDLESBOKOUGH, Thursday. The pigi iron tracte has.this week been firmer. Quotations have been higher as given by makers, while merchanis have also been asking more money. The ordinary figure for No. 3 is 44s 3d to 44s 6J, and No. 4 pigs Is less than that figure. The feeling seems to largely pervade the trade that there is a better time coming, and that there will be a growing de. mand for iron as the season progresses. The makers, consequently, are not ready sellers they look for better prices later on, and hence they will not readily sell at the present rates, but ask about 6d or Is more than the merchants. The shipments have been good, and some more cargoes have been sent to South Wales. America h;is also been taking some iron, while for several w. eks i reviously there had been a cessation of theAmerican demnnt!. There are also inquiries reported on American account, v. hich it is ho, ed will lead to further orders. The Scotch demand has lately showed renewed vigour, and there is much more iron being sent to Scotland. The Continental requirements tire also good, aud likely, it is believed, to increase. The local finis! ed-iron trade has also shown some improvement, and this is likely to react upon the pig-iron trade in causing more demand. There can. be no doubt that the finished-iron trade has been improving considerably, more, however, in the direction of shipbuilding iron than other classes. Thus plates and angles have been stiger in price, as the. manufacturers, finding their order books nearly full,have been putting up their rates. The steel trade keeps pretty active, and steel lails are about £ 6 10s per ton. This ii, fully 1:2 per ton in excess of the prices of little more than 12 months ago, consequently there ought to be a fair profit at the present prices, especially as there ia not much addition to the cost of the raw mateiials or wages, 'i i,ere is a TCry brifk condition in the iron shipbuilding trade. It is computed that on the Tyne alune ordtrsare in hand for 100,000 tons of iron sliippiiig. There has been a good delivery of manufactured iron for shipment of late. The Durham miners have not been advanced by their sliding scale like the iroii workers, the average price of all coal being 4s 5-25d per ton. The Cleveland ironmasters' returns show very favourable results on the whole. There has been a net. increase of about 3,000 tons for July. The very large production of 212,608 tons of pig metal of all surts took pla.ce during last month. The steam-coal trade has been pi etty steady in the Tyne district. There has been a good deal of coal going off to the Baltic, but in other direc- tions the trade is dull, and the best chisses of steam-coai ave to meet very sharp competition from the South Wales trade, e-p^cially in the markets, which are favourable to \Y ales by reason of their geographical position. There is not much change in price. Other classes of coal, and also of coke, remain about the same.

The repoit concludes with an attack upon Mr Gladstone and his Budget, and urges licensed victuallers to extend "and strengthen their organisation.— The President, in moving the adoption of the report, referred to the defection among some of their members, and the want of interest taken in the association by the others, all of which were sources of regret.—The Vice-President seconded the adoption of the report, and said he felt that the want of interest in the proceedings of the association arose from a fear oil the part of many of meeting the few backsliders at the last election. The report was then adopted. A letter was read fioin Alr J. Is ac Wood, police-constable, said he found Mrs Ballard's bodv with a steering cord twisted round both arms. The left arm did not appear to have been advanced as though she had been Pulling the cord. Mr Ballard said he v;as certain I\Irs Yewcome was steering, and the boat was nearest the Surrey shore at the time of the collision. After further evidence the inquiry was adjourned.

At the Old Bailey, on Thursday, Louisa Ingles, usit] nurse at Guy's Hospital, v. as charged with causing the death of Louisa Morgan, a patient, by ad- ministering a cold bath. Mr Poland prosecuted Sir John Holker defended. The statement for the prosecution, borne out by evidence, was to the eff..ct that the deceased was suffering from, con- sumption and tubercular disease of the brain. Prisoner said that she had the sanction of the sister of the ward to give her a bath, but it was stated that instead of & preparing the ba.th first and then assisting the patient to it she dragged her roughly to the bathroom and left her in the empty bath for three-quarters of an hour, observing that deceased was obstinate and would not help herself. She also used some roughness in bringing deceased back, causing several bruises. The hearing was adjourned, 0
