ISOUTH WALES COAL AND IRON…
[FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENTS AND EXCLUSIVE 30UROES.J SOUTH WALES COAL AND IRON SHIPMENTS. tSPEOIAL REPORf BY OCR OWN I CARDIFF, Thursday Night.—Business is still in a very tlepi"es:Oèll condition at this Fort, and coal prices are notably weaker than they have been for some considerable time ps.t. The first qualities of steam coal may be obtained, colliery screened, at about 8s Od per ton, and other sorts proportion- ately cheap. The shippers of the best steam coal have hitherto been able to maintain tlieir pricea pretty fairly, thougil the fluctuation of second qualities lias been considerable for some time pa t, but they are now beginning to feel the en'ect of the long continued depression, and are disposed to mske sales d prices bolow those recently obtain- able. Contracts for large quantities, the delivery of winch extends over next year, have been made at very low figures. For some sorts of steam coal I hear of quotation:) as low f.s 7s 6d colliery screened. It ia evident that if the downward ten- dency of coal prices continues serious losses will be incurred, and the general impression here seems to be that we may hear of commercial disas- ters nearer home than before long', unless an improvement takes A general want of confidence seems to be rapidly spreading', render- ing business more an [ more dimcult. The freight market lias undergone no great ckwge i:JÍnce last week. Allld:l<ls of tonnage ha.s been very scarce, and the ratea generally for coala are nrm, and in :o:l\e cases slightly higher. The recent heavy weather lias kept back a. number uf steamers and "ailing vessels now overdue here, and increases the troubles of our ship; ers. The iron market is a shade¡wors() than it was, and presents no prospect of improvement. The imports of ore during the week at this port amount to 4,057 tons, the greater part of winch is from Bilbao, and the remnindef from Cumberland. A large number of steamers, laden with Bilbao ore, are iunongst those now overdue In South Wales ports, which ha'e put into ports in the English Channel tJ¡rouh f:itrc3S of weathcr. TLis orc is worth about 15s rer to: DttnculUcs have added to the expense of shipping oie at Carthagena recently, but the importers cannot ¡;¡btrcin any advance on the hitherto obtainable. ore is a tri3o cheaper f.nd w.II probably Mi still lower. The imports of pitwoo.I have a'ru.iunLcd to about 3,000 tons during the week, and consider- able nuctuation ha. taken place in its price. To- day, however, I think it may fairly be quoted at 22< p-jr ton. The entries outwards of vessels to load in Car- eE'! thrin;; tte wee} com¡,ri-;e -12 stealr,er3 of the estimated burthen of 43,32:J ton", and 65 sailing- vea-'jis calculated to carry 27,837 tons, making a total of tons, against 94,457 tons of la&t week. The supply or tonnage amounts in Swansea for the week to 12,833 tons, and in New- p;;i'L. to 11,3:22 tons. Cardiu'has cleared forei);-u during the week 4t steamers and 79 sailing vessels, with 65,969 tons of coal, 2,275 tons of patent fuel, and 1,116 tons of ¡r_m. Of the iron 955 tons went to Bombay and 190 tons to Amsterdam. Ths coal and fuel ship- ments were as fol!o\vs :—France, 13,650 tons Mediterranean ports, 13,873 tons Eastern "Medi- terranean ports, 9,005 tons Spain, 5,9GO tons Indies, 5,S89 tons Soutii America, 5,757 tons Africa, etc., 5,049 tons Indies, 2,772 tons and Baltic, etc., 1,289 ton:?. Swansea has cleared foreign during the week, eight steamers and 19 sailing vessels, with 9,300 tons of coal, and 1.650 tons of patent fuel, as follows:—France, 5,939 toug; South Arncnen, 3,913 tons; Baltic, etc., G13 tons and West Indies, 40 tons. There has becnno iron. cleared hsre duri:;g the week. Ne'port lias despatched foreign during the same period 11 steamers and 22 sailing vessels, with 14,653 tons of coal, and 4.93!! tons of iron. Of the irun 1,848 tons went to Littleton; 1,520 tons to Maryborough; 500 tona to Kurrachee;40 tons Barcelona; and 28 tons to Mes.?ina. The coal shipment were distributed as follow.—France, 4,C'H tons; Spain, 3,151 tons; Eastern Mediter- ranean ports, 1.3'JO tons Indies, 2,203 tons Mediterranean ports, 1,289 tons South America, 854 tons; Portugal, 800 tons; Baltic, etc., 800 tons :.nd Africa, etc., 242 tous.
NEWCASTLE "1RONT COAL, AND…
NEWCASTLE "1RONT COAL, AND CHEMICAL TRADES. [SPECIAL REPORT FROM OCR Thursday.—There is a very quiet tone in commercial circle: but the district la happily free from the fears that exist In the west of Scotland at present. While a very dud winter is anticipated, litt'd elsa is feared, and there is a belief th;tt in the spring trade will begin to revive, andbe on a healthier and more profitable has been for some time plst. The cost of working in all trades has been reduced, and a:i extension of the working hours, and a return to the state of thi':gs that existed sevon years ago, is now being attempted by the Northumberland coalowners. Much ".s the miners object to it, on 'henry, many of the.u are cohvimed that it is necessary for of the kind to be done to recover the trade. The amount of new business doue being very slight, and pi-Icej in the staple trades remaining in the feebJc condition in which they have been for some timp, the necessities of the seller so'netm:p3 leading to a sale at less than t);a market quotations. Shipping is quiet, and freights scarce.
NORTH OF ENGLAND IRON AND…
NORTH OF ENGLAND IRON AND COAL TRADES. (SPECIAL REPORT FROM OUR OWN :1IDDLE"BOROLGII, Thursday.—The p'g iron has been extremely dull throughout the week. Prices have been nominally the though, owing to the little business done, thay arc yery dimcult to fix. In fact there are no mr.rket rates. The makers are quoting 38a to 38s 6d, less one per cent in most cases, but there are others who waul,l take 37s Gd nett, so the merchants state, and they profess they can buy of the makers at the lower rate. '1'he lealling maJcers are not, however, selling. They are holding their hand, as they have been doing for some time past. Some of the merchants talk of No 3 being below 37s nett, and some of them have been <' ering at that rate, but such prices are exceptional. Probably abont 37s Cd, No. 3, may be taken as near the:average figures of the market. No. 4 forge is relatively dearer than No. 3, as there has been less of it pressed upon the market. This arises from the fact that it is chieny No. 3 foundry iron :which is also had on Scotch account, a.nd as this trade has been so shaken by the lat;e failure in Glasgow, it is easily to be understood that more iron of this class has beer* thrown upon the market. The deliveries to Scotland, last week, fe!l oS very considerably. There were only 3,253 tons sent forward, less than half the de- liveries; for the corresponding week of the previous year. This, It is to be feared, is an earnest of vvhat ia to come. as there la a general expectation that the trade will drop off, unless, of course, there should be a material rise of prices in the Scotch market. The bad weather which has prevailed may have had something to do with the reduced shipments, but it is much more likely that they have been chiefly amicted by the different conditions of trade. The reduction of rates by the North Eastern Railway Company is nominally only for six months, it turns out from the oflicial communica- tion which has just been published. The company will, however, probably not attempt to go back to the old standard until there ia a, greater degree of prosperity. At any it wilt for the time help to lessen the pressure upon the producers of pig- iron, a.nd it will come at a time when it is peculiarly useful. The manufactured Iron trade, If thev succeed in reducing the wages of the men still further, will a!so improve their position. In fact those tirms which are makers of pig iron as well as manu- factured will, supposing wages fall as well as railway rates, reap a double advantage. Ths Darlington Iron Company (Limited), whose large iron rail works formerly employed nearly 2,000 men have been stopped altogether. The company have an idea forgoing in for steel manufacture, but it will altogether depend upon whether the rail- way company will grant them certain special con- cessions, which is rather improbable, seeing that the company h ive already made concessions on a. scale to the pig iron producers. Onedmportant item to the steeb producers of the west coast, in the Welsh trade, is that Mr S. G. Thomas, whose experiments at one of the Welsh works have attracted some attention, and who read a paper at the laat meeting of the Iron and Steel Institute, is about to attempt what so many h')ve hitherto failed in, viz., to elimina.te the phosphorus from Cleveland iron, and Mr Thomas appears to think that he can do it at a rate which shall ensure commercial success. The manufactured iron trade has been very quiet. There is really little or no change in prices. Bars are now about jS5 7s 6d. Some are askinj? more and others le.s- All the other quota- tions are the same a.s were given last week. The coal trade in Durham and Northumberland ia quiet for the time of year. The coke trade has not shown the demand that was anticipated. Some inquiries are coming forward for next year's business, but everything .indicate-' that a lessened trade will be done with Barrow in Durham coke in future, as the supplies for that district are obtained more largely from other quarters. The reduction of wages threatened in Nor- thumberland is causing some commotion in that district. The employers state that the prices have greatly declined since the last reduction, which is no doubt the case, as hct steam is not more than 9s per ton, whilst a fair good medium coal is ou'er- at 7s G 1 to 8s all nett. It is scarcely known how these :prices compare with th')?e of South Wales, but from t.he competitions which is experienced. in which Wc!sh coats are successful, it is believed that the steam coal producers of the principality stiM manage to undersell thr'sc of tlje northern country. Gas coals are a good deal quieter, wdiether from stocks having b°cn previously 1. id in, or from the enects of the electric li:llt, is not known.

----SCHEME TO KIDN AP A PRINCESS.
SCHEME TO KIDN AP A PRINCESS. A sensational story comes from Canada, The yo!'o?t<o Globe reports a Fenian plot to kidnap the Marquis of .Lome and the Princess Louise. It is stated that two cruisers are being htted out at a port; between New York and Martha's Vineyard to capture the Marquis and his wife from the steamer in which they sail for Canad;t. Presum- ing they capture the illustrious travellers, it would be interesting to know what the Fenians would do with them. „

STRANGE EVIDENCE AT A BOARD OF TRADE ENQUIRY. Our Plymouth correspondent telegraphs :—The old f?dage that a little !eak may sink n. great ship," was illustrated by the evidence on Thursday, at the enquiry respecting the abandonment of the Glasgow steamer Rover. A witness produced a morsel of crushed coal, which had been taken from tho bilge injection valve. Through thia v:Jve the rush of water had come, it having been ineffectually shut by the engineer, 0\ i1Jg to the lodgment of a piece of coal. Just before the aban- donment the engineer closed the sea injection valve, and thus, unwittingly, stopped the leak. The enquiry was adjourned that charges may be prafcrred by the Board of Trade.

GELLIGAER SCHOOL BOARD.
GELLIGAER SCHOOL BOARD. A meeting of this board wa.3 held on Thursday, at Pontlottyn. present—the Rev A. Davies (in the chair), Messrs T. Theoplnlua, J. P. Williams, W. Beddoe, J. Mathewa, J. Jones (attendance ofEcer), s.nd J. Davies (deputy clerk). The Deputy Clerk read a. loiter fr&m Canon Harries referring to some deaka which were loft idle in Bargoed Joint School, and valued, it is stated, at JE40. A meeting of parishioners had thought that the desks should be utilised at other schools to avoid extra expenditure. Another question was also raised at a meeting in the patidl held at Pontnewydd, in which it was shewn that children attended that school from the adjoining parishes of LIanvabon and Merthyr, and in such a case they deemed it proper that the Gelligaer School Board should adopt the same plan as they lial adopted with regard to the support of that school as that of the Bargoed Joint School. The chairman and the Rev J. P. Williams showed that the desks had been valued at JE5. It was agreed to consult the Bedwellty School Board on the matter. As regarded the attendance of children of other parishes at Pont- newydd School, the Chairman said that on the surface it appeared that there was sumcient reasou for taking into that school the children of their own parish only, or, In taking in children from other parishes, that those perishes should be called upon to bear their portion of the expense. But there was another and important aspect of this question. He did not like to send away from their schools children attending from other parishes. And there was another thing. There was an advantage to this board by the attendance of the children of other parishes in the shape of the annual grant. Thr opinion of the chairman was acquiesced in. Mrs M. A. Greenie, the pre- sentmistressofthe rational School at Vochriw, was appointed mistress of the Vcchriw Infant School. The Chairman said that as the bchool ye.r commenced on Fnd&y, the board was under the neces-ity of opening their new schools on that day, which they could not df. The Rev. T, Theophilas pointed out that although the school year ended on Thursday the exa.mina.tlon would not take place until next Wednesday. It would be necessary to show the inspector that the school for the ensuing year had been commenced, and that registers, &o., should be made. Therefore, ho would suggest that the present teachers be em- powered to carry on the school until aft:er the examination. On the nutio.'i of Mr Mathews, seconded by Mr W. Dcddop, it was resolved that an effort be made to utili,.c the present school building to accommodate the children at Vochriw. The 'tintion was carried. A long discussion ensued a.s to the opening of IJrithdir Chapel temporarily. In connection with the Vochriw school accommo- d.ttio)), and the supplying of nre to that building. Mr Matthews said thr.,t fire was necessary, but ho warned them against supplying lire to a building not the property of the board whilst they had au offer of a convenient room, where tho school could be carried on until the new school was opened. The Rev J. P. Williams objected to the conduct of some of ti.e members who he thought passed resolutions before coming to the board, and said that to afterwards bring the matter forward at the board, was only a, formality, as it had been previously decided upon. The ob- servations made wjre strongly replied to by the Rev T. Thcpb]u:'I, who stated that lie had not obstructed the progress of the education of the parish, as could be shown by Ins willingness to keep on the Vochriw school until the examina- tion, and it W.13 upon this motive lie had acted with respect to the question now before the board. Eventually the matter was amicably dis- posed of. The Pnb'ic Loan Commissioners wrote asking information as to the probable sum of money which would be required for school building pur- poses for the next year. The saiu information to be made u;) by December 21st. The Chairman remarked that previous to that time another board meeting v/ould be held, and as they would require the sum for the erection of Pontne\ydd new school and some other matters, lie thought it desirable to defer the .-ubject until the next board meeting, with which opinion the board agreed. A letter was read from the mincers of Ge11i- g?er village bo&rd school (1) calling attCHttOn to the question of school fees arrears, and offering any assistance they could render (2; recommending the appointment of Mrs Lestcr M sewing mistress to tha.t school until ttie examination. (3.) The appointment of four persons as managers. The Rev. T. Thcophilus gave notice that he wi'latthe next meeting, bring forward the question of school fees an-fars. It was agrc0:.l tlut be mi&tre-'s, at a salary of .E10 per annum, from the time she has been attending to the sewing until this examination. The appointment of the persons named as malingers was agreed to. NEW THEATRE'R?AL.
NEW THEATRE'R?AL. The performances during the present v. eck have aSorded intense delight to good audiences, the acting of Mr John Billington fairly bringing the house Seldom have we hearll more genuine and hearty enthusiasm than has greeted this retily finished artiste in his delinea- tion of .41(ii-Ic Mzt:grat-c. Rough and Ready is so cleverly constructed, and smartly written that it pre,;ds equally to ;1 ciusse.?. EUen ;[ q". i';ck :'L''j!y ?.!pp?'? Mr Lllll11gtün, a,ad m the ch.i!'actcr of Alice is exactly suited, her de- iinention throughout proving her ability. A cast more complete it would be dimcult to find in a Provincial theatre. Mr C. Arnold port- rays the scheming vilLmy of H:'ck01'V to the life, and Mr J. R. Crawford i, equally successful in the uncongenial part of H,i),i-y VtÛcnt'Ïne. As Jlrs Vu{cm'ine Miss Elinor Aickin acts with a due appreciation of the neces- sary vigour and pathos placed in her hands by the author. The minor parts are most ably rendered, and the mounting of the piece is in every way in keeping with the usual good taste of Mr Buhver, the manager. In the iirst act, a fountain of real water surrounded by exceedingly beautiful plants, adds greatly to the effect of a. very pretty "set." All the characters arc nightly called before the curtain, and received with a.p- pla.uso. The farce of "My Turn Next h&s been the amusing afterpiece; and that favourite come- dian, Mr John Watkins, has succeeded in sending his audience home in the best of humours. This (Ftiday) evening is set apart for the benefit of Mr Billington, and we are promised Chained to the oar," a drama vritten especially Tor this talented actor, by Mr B. J. Byron. The afterpiece will be; an adautation from the French, by Arthur Iathiwn. Esq., entitled "A Bank Holiday," Mr BIHington and Miss Mey- rick, appearing in both pieces. It is hoped that a large audience will be present, and shew their appreciation of the 'capital programme provided. To-morrow night will be the last of this engage- ment, when "Rough and Ready" will be given, followed by the intensely interesting dra-ma, "Hand and Glove." The institution of pit stalls has proved a wise move on the part of tha management, and these will, no doubt, In time, prove most popular with a certain class of play- goers.
