[ALL RIGHTS IRESEN-VEDIO THE MYSTERY OF THE JADE EYE. By FERGUS HUME, Author of The Mystery of a Hansom Cab." The Bishop's Secret," &0. CHAPTER XVII.-(Continued), The big, coarse man was so amazed at this unexpected action that he could hardly speak. He sat down on a sofa, and drew Rebekah's head to his breast. "My dear-my dear," he stuttered, "you do love me a little?" "Oh!" moaned Rebekah, "I have been a fool! I thought I was strong enough to stand alone. But I want you now. Joe. You must be my husband in fact as well as in name." I will, I will," said Joe, and clinched his resolve with an oath which need not here be set down. "I don't care for the money or anything else. I'll tell my father that you I are my wife, and he can leave the dollars to an orphanage if he likes." "But you are an only son, Joe." "That doesn't matter," he replied gloomily, "my father is a hard man. If he thought 1 had married without his consent he would strike my name out of his will at once. I have kept quiet all these years to get the money because I didn't think you'd care for me without it. But if you had only loved me, Rebekahr-" "I do-like you," she whispered, fingering the button of his coat, "perhaps if we live to- gether, like married people, love may come." "And shall I tell my father?" "If you like. But no." the Hebraic strain in Rebekah came out, "he is ill, and it is of no use worrying him. Besides, as we have kept our marriage quiet for so long, a few more months won't matter." "Months? Weeks, you mean. The old man is going fast. I am sorry, although he has been a hard father to me. I always wanted love and affection," he continued shyly, "but because I am big and rough no one ever thought I wanted it. Now yon—oh R«bekali! you will love me?" This was quite a new side of Joe's character. Rebekah had always thought that he cared for her much in the same way as he cared for dogs and horses, only in a less degree. That he should feel the wish to be loved and made much of astonished her. She felt an unusual tenderness, and kissed him fondly. Poor Joe was almost weeping. He swore under his breath to keep back the tears that would bead his eyelashes. "We have both been wrong," said Rebekah softly, "you not to show this side of your character to me before, and I not to have found it out. We quarrelled, and so misunder- stood one another. Now, when your father is gone and there is no danger of your losing the money, we will acknowledge the marriage. Oh, don't frown, Joe; it's not the money I'm thinking about. I would come to you without that." "I know you would," sighed Nash rap- turously. "But before we come together," went on Rebekah, "I have some things to do. I have to see Tyson. You will not be jealous, dear?" "I will try not," said Nash, but he scowled. "Joe." said Rebekah, on seeing his violent passion thus expressed, "did you go to Ches- leigh on the night Count Ivan was murdered?" "Yes, I did. I went to see that Tyson of yours, and told him I wouldn't have him making love to you." He never did that, Joe." "Well, he painted your picture, and I didn't like it. All the same, Tyson isn't a bad sort of chap. But that Count. He was in the same hotel on the same night. I never expected to see him there. but as we met I gave him a bit of my mind, I can tell you. If he had lived he would not have come after you again in a hurry. I'd have thrashed him if he had, and I told him so. Aye, I did that." "Joe ;-You did not kill him?" she asked anxiously. Nash ipened his big, blue eyes in a-naze- ment. What the devil put such a silly idea into your head!' he asked roughly. "I era an Englishman, Rebekah, and I don't go about settling my troubles in that way. I would have thrashed him for two pins. Hm. murder?—you don't mean to say that you believed I was the man who strangled the poor dt'vil!" "I thought your jealousy-" said Rebekah faintly. "you were jealous and violent, Joe. If you had met him on that night ?" I didn't "—Joe stopped and looked con- fused. "I may as well make a clean breast of it,' he said gloomily. "I went out for a walk, intending to call and have it out with Tyson. But as I had already had a flght with, the Count at th, hotel I didn't feel np to another, so I went for a walk instead. I was on the sanJs of the beach, and nearly dropped into a quicksand. Then. I came back. It was a moonlight night, and the clouds were blowing across the sky at timed. As I came dolra from the sandhills I saw two men struggling. One had the other down by the throat. I gave a shout and. ran up. The ma.n who was on top sprang up and bolted past me. The morn VHS then behind a cloud, and I caught only a glimpse of him I then looked at the man on the ground. It was the Russian. I was about to give the alarm, and then I renumbered that I had quarrelled with him. I thought that I might be accused, so I decided to say rothing and clear cut I heard someone coming and I bolted. Then I saw Tysr-n next morning, J1 nd returned to town. That is the whole truth.' "Do you know who the man who killed the Count was?" "No, I caught only a glimpse of him. He said something. I wouldn't recognise him. but I should remember his voice if I heard it again. I thought it might be that nigger I ] saw at Count Ivan's one day when I went to find out if you were engaged ^o him. And by Jove!" cried Nash, "that is the same nigger ] who ran past me just now." j Rebekah nodded: "He accuses you of mur- dering the Count." ] "Does he now? I'll twist his neck for that. ] Who is he?" "He was an enemy of Ivan's." 1 "Is he now! Then he kiljpd him, sure j enough. I can't be sure, but I do think he was ] the man who ran away. And why did he kill 1 him?" "That's a long story, Joe. It is no use my { telling you about it now. I have a lot to do 1 before I can come to you, Joe dear." < "What do you mean?" Nash looked angry. "Now. don't lose your temper," said ( Rebekah coolly, "I know what I'm about, Joe. i There are some wrong things which need to be put right. I am the only person who can put them right. You must trust me for a time." f "No more engagements, though!" "No, I promise you that. I only engaged ( myself to Ivan for a certain purpose. I got j what I wanted, and if he had not died I should ? have told him I was married. But the poor man is dead, so there is little use saying J anything bad about him. Come, Joe, you will j trust me?" I "Yes. But that nigger?" "I'll see to him. That is part of the business I spokQ. of. Oh. Joe, you do not know what a. t lot I'll ha-ve to tell yon." ]

CHAPTER XVIII.
"When?" asked Nash, with a huge sigh, an<t a longing look. "When Jack Tyson is married." "What have you got to do with that?" "Don't frown, Joe. I have a great deal to with it. The girl he is going to marry is a. dear friend of mind, and I want to see her happy w*h Jack. When they are married and I have arranged everything I will tell you one of the strangest stories you have ever heard. Then I shall leave the stage, and come to my own dear husband to live happy ever afterwards. Now. are you satisfied- I Bear?" She rumpled his hair. "Quite satisfied," said Joe, and kissed her. So in this way they made it up. CHAPTER XVIII. AN ASTONISHING ANNOUNCEMENT. Jack had several interviews with Mrs. Jury, but he could learn no more from her than she had told when he first called. She instructed Jonas to prepare a deed of gift of the cottage and the income, and within tho week Jack wa.s in possession of both. "And now you can marry Lil." said Mrs.* Jury when the business was completed. "Next, week, I and my poor Vassia are going ta America, and there I hope to make his life happy. He has had much misery, but at least he shall have a serene old age." "1 only hope he will live," said Tyson, but he shook his head. "With care and careful nursing, he will live. Jack. His physical health is not so bad. But his mind has been shaken by all the misery he has undergone. Ah! if you had only seen him when we first met. He was handsome and clever man. Now he is the mere shadow of his former self. But I love; him all the same." "You are a good woman, Mrs. Jury." "No, Jack, I am not good. You may havds cause to say so before we bid good-bye foin ever." "I don't understand. Surely, there is no. thing wrong." Mrs. Jury looked at him, and opened her mouth to speak. "No," she said, "I shall wait until you and Lil are married. Then I will pay you a visit, and tell you what I know. I have not revealed everything." Jack thought that she referred to the mur. ders, and wondered if, after all, Solomon had killed the Jew. Dreadful as the crime was. he thought that Marthas deserved his fate. The man had behaved in a most wicked way towards his brother-in-law. Whether Uncle Priscus had connived with the Jew to bring about the disaster, that Solomon might have been forced to surrender the Jade Eye, Jack could not guess. The character of Mr. Glynn, certainly, did not appear in the best light in his statement. He had behaved shabbily towards Solomon, to say the least of it, and without doubt it was a feeling of shame thao. had induced him to give Mrs. Jury a home and to leave her provided for after his deaths The woman firmly believed that Glynn had aided Marthas to get Solomon into trouble. and—now that Jack was informed of the truth—she displayed a bitterness against hiat uncle which surprised him. "I really don't think Uncle Priscus was so bad as you make out," he said. "Indeed he was," she replied. "I am certain that he knew the forged cheque was part of the plot to force Vassia into a corner. And he did not even keep faith with my brother.) He was willing enough to get the Jade Eye. but he kept dark the fact tha.t he possessed the image. I wish Marthas had found that out, and had made your uncle suffer for hie duplicity. He deserved to." "If be was guilty of the mean action you speak of. he certainly did. But as he is dead I shall give him the benefit of the doubt. And, after all," added Tyson, "he did suffer. Did he not lose his daughter'. That made his life wretched for many a long day." "He deserved to suffer," cried Mrs. Jury fiercely. "I can't give him the benefit of the doubt. He behaved in a most wicked fashion. But let us say no more about it. Jack. You go away and marry Lil; when you. are established at the cottage I will come down and see you." Lil was quite willing to marry her lover, She had hoped to find some pupils, but, in spite of the help of Mrs. Jonas, she had not been able to get one. For some time she had been living with the kindly solicitor and his wife, but now her pride forbade her to stop longer eating the bread of charity. Besides. Mrs. Jury had quite exonerated herself in Lira eyes. She had accounted for the handkerchief being found in the shop .parlour, and had! proved herself guileless of the crime. Undef these circumstances, Lil agreed that Jack; should accept the benefits of the woman. "After all, she is only doing what she should do," said Lil, when Jack told her all. "Your uncle should have left you the cottage and the income." "I dafesay he would have done so. bnt that his conscience pricked him about the way he had behaved to Solomon. It is the will that makes me think Unole Priscus really had something to do with getting Solomon into trouble. If his conscience had been clear, he would not have bothered about Mrs. Jury." "Well, let ua think that he was not so black as appearances make him out," said Lil cheerfully, "after all. Jack, he was your rela- tive, and one must remember that blood Ul thicker than water." Tyson laughed at this rather incoherent remark. "What about our marriage. Lil?" he asked. "When is it to be?" "Whenever you like, Jack. I am ashamed stopping so long with Mr. and Mrs. Jonas. As I cannot earn my own bread you must eanu it for me." "You shall earn your living as my house- keeper and wife." said Jack. The result of this conversation was that the marriage took place within the week. As Tyson was not well-off, and Lil had no friend&. they did not have a grand wedding. One morning they went to church, and were made man and wife. No one was present, not evelz Mr. Jonas. Jack laughed when he waJfcwk back to the solicitor's house with Mrs. Tyson. "It puts me in mind of that character in 'Great Expectations, he said, when Lil asked the reason of his mirth, "you remem- ber!, The man who said, 'Hullo, here's 81 church, let's get married.' I don't think we have acted with any more deliberation." "The great fact is that we are married," said Mrs. Tyson, sensibly, "and I hope you'll never live to regret it, Jack." "Regret that I have the most delightful of girls for my wife!" cried Mr. Tyson. "Lil, if it wasn't the public street I should punish you for that speech with a kiss." "Would that be a punishment?" said Lil demurely. Jack looked round. It was a quiet road and no prying person was in sight. Then a green- grocer's cart came suddenly round the OOrDer. The punishment was postponed, and Lil' question was left unanswered. The newly, married couple walked to the villa of Mr. Jonas. and partook of a quiet loneheoQ, brightened by the unaccustomed presence—aA that meal—of champagne. Only Mrs. Jonaw was present to congratulate them, as her how band was unable to lot friendehrp otand iJII the way of business. In another two boon Mr. and Mrs. Tyson were on their way to Brighton, to indulge in a. moderately expffll, eive honeymoon. urnr* (To be continued tM uravj
