THE MONTHLY ACCOUNT. The Monthly Account is one of those things which makes for one's peace of mind. It gives you just sufficient credit to save bother and confusion, and not enough to lead you astray. It is an eminently fair and reasonable arrange- ment, having none of the weaknesses of long credit systems, whereby it is F impossible for businesses to keep their prices down yet it gives shopping that added ease which is the only sound reason for having an account at all. When you start out (after opening an account) to shop at Brown's you don't Z.11 have to worry as to whether your purse contains sufficient money, you can set off with only your fare, and passing from Department to Department, do nothing but give your name and address with every purchase that you make. Somewhere in the background you know that Brown's have a little record of your status references to prove one's bona-fide; your telephone number, &c., all jotted down on a card that gives you the right to pay for purchases in a lump sum on the ist of every month. Quite regularly the Bills come in, and quite regularly you must pay, for this credit system is limited, as all wise credit systems ought to be. It is meant for the customers' immediate convenience, and for nothing else. On the long credit system it would be impossible to trade at the extremely moderate prices so common at this Establishment. To have an account eases things in many different ways. It saves the time and bother spent in making out bills, doling out money and waiting for change. It means you can order goods by telephone or post, and another great considera- tion, it helps you to keep your dress and house accounts. All those odd shillings that you pay in cash for trifles, losing the Bills and foolishly counting the sum too insignificant to matter very much, mount up but of them no record remain. But when all your expenditure is made at Brown's and every item entered to account, then once a month the Bill comes home-a complete and accurate rendering of all your spendings in the last four weeks, and you know, as the slang saying goes, exactly where you are." When you arc next at Brown's, ask to see the "accounts manager" and arrange with him to have a monthly account, the advantages of which are so obvious.
