------_-----.--A BARMAID"…
A BARMAID" MASHER." Heartless Conduct of a Cardiff Man. Albeit P. Smart, a professor of cnligraphy, who for some years conducted a typewriting and penmanship school neat Si, John's Climch, Car- J ff, was charged before Mr J, B. 'Ferrier, amI Mr Alex. Duncan nt Cardiff Police Cantt on v with neglecting to maintain his wife p.nd child. Smart, who had benil aryfisted at Warrington, wore a mkeiabio expression, his appearance being in triackud contrast to the spick and span style whieh used to distinguish him when he was regarded ay a fascinating masher" of barmaids -d mr it the second-class local boteJn. Mr Pritchaid, wacrant officer to the Cardiff Gaardian?, proved a piev/oas conviction of a month in October :ast, and stated thtt instead of '•bseivi"g a premisc msde to his wife to give up his intimr.cy with another woman, priison-1 hud done his utmost to evade arrest, and had been foand living with an es-Cuidi £ f barmaid, whom, however, he persist d in debr bmg as his cousin. Not it penny piece had he sent to iiiis wife since t';e last preci edii'gs. Prisoner addie ,sed the Court. Evidently he appreciated the gra vity of hill position. There were none of the exaggerated rhetorical Uouiishes or W's¡i:nJativa Ÿ¡¡,na8tics which had cotivnis, Ll the Court on his former appearance. Now he craved for lenient trsatmeut, going so far as to say that he would have starved bad he not been taken into hia father's house. Just give me a chance, your Worships, and I will go b ck to my wife, If she wil: come with me, and 1 believe slia will. You will never tue it if you give me this chance.—Mr Ferrier I remember you. Yon hpd yonr chance ana didn't take it. Sir Pritcbard then told the Court that Smart had arranged to make a bigr mous marriage with a girl in Bristol, ar.fl that this was frustrated only by the enterprise of the liol ce. The young wormm found with prisoner in Warrington was the one who had accompanied him from Cardiff to Bristol. Prisoner was sentenced to two months' inz- pri»c iimett! w;th hard labour.

Smith Y> a can't give me three years for the first offence. Mr Justice Wright: Well, yon may be right. I see, there is no previous cjonvictioa for an offence of tbi-i kind. Judge and counsel then looked up the law I upon the point, and eventually Mr Justice Wright said I have power to a tr-r a sentence I during the As^tzes, Will yon look it up, Mr tiowlatt, by to-morrow morning, and if I am wrong of coaraa prisoner will bave the benefit of it.
