MURDER OF AN ENGLISHMAN IN JAPAN YOKOHAMA, Feb. 17th. Considerable sensation has been created among •he foreign community here owing to the murder of Mr George Gower Robinson, a banker, of this CIty, by Lieutenant Hetherington, of the United States warship Marion. Jealousy 18 the motive assigned for the crime. s Mr Robinson, who was born here and educated in England, was a young and handsome man who IbOved in the best society. After forming the icquaintance of the Hetheringtons he paid Marked attention to Mrs Hetherington, until at engtb Lieutenant Hetherington told him that must leave tbe city. Mr Robinson complied, "Ut only to return shortly afterwards, when he the intimacy to which Lieutenant Hetherington had objected. On the evening of February 13th Mr Robinson was out driving with a friend, when a man's voice heard ordering them to stop. Two Revolver shots followed. At tbe second **obinson fell from the carriage wounded in the groin. His friend jumped out and seized the Murderer, but shortly afterwards released him, lieutenant Hetherington walking away, followed »y Mr Robinson's native servant, who pointed him out to the police, by whom he was arrested and lodged in gaol. Lieutenant Hetherington is w, however, a prisoner on board the Marion.

THE RUSSIAN FRONTIER. BERLIN, Monday. A telegram received from Breslau by the Berlin •Fagebtatt reports that in the towns alongside the Russian frontier domiciliary visits ara being con- tinually made by the police, who are in search of Nihilistic literature and explosives. The authorities 'earing that endeavours may be made to smuggle across the frontier some of the dynamite **cently stolen from the French quarry of Soisy de Sous Etrolles, all persons crossing the frontier are subjected to a close examinatIOn by the Russian Guards. An engineer named Lelewcl was recently arrested one of the frontiers in possession of some "ighly incriminating letters.

THE DESTITUTION IN VIENNA. VIENNA, Wednesday. Et consequence of the police piohibition of the Public distribution of bread to the unemployed, there was no repetition, to-day, of the Recent terrible scenes in the districts of jkerehanfeld, Ottakring, and Favoriten. ■The totipn, of the policf is much commended by all Aranrfa who witnessed tbe conduct of the S»pl«who assembled for Monday's distribution. f six thousand people who waited patiently on inow-cowKd ground exposed to a cutting Wind from nine in the morning till four in the afternoon, no fewer than two thousand were sent away unrelieved. The scene was a shocking one, the crowd crushing and shrieking, and fairly Wring and trampling each other in a. frenzied struggle to get near the distributiors of the dole. The relief fund organised by the Burgomaster Dow amounts to £20000. and has been almost Entirely subscribed by the merchants and Wealthy Jews of Vienna. Help will be distributed at the 19 divisional custom houses under the Supervision of the police. Elaborate arrange- ments have been made to secure that only Reserving cases shall be assisted. For in- stance, the Labour Union books must be shown and proof given that the appli- cant is in genuine need of assistance, hitherto the relief has been a practical illustra- tion of the principle of the survival of the fittest, the strongest men pushing their way to the front and obtaining the bread which in very many c&ses was afterwards exchanged for schnapps at the spirit shops. The police authorities did not Communicate the prohibition of the public distri- bution to the Relief Committee, who merely 8a.w the announcement in the papers. The com- mittee had consequently 1.0,000 loaves on their bands, which they returned in ten waggons to the bakers. The usual crowds began to gather ay outside the various centres of distribution, IllUtI were easily dispersed by the police. Rome, Wednesday. The Pope has read with deep concern the re- ports of the serious distress existing in Vienna, and has caused to be sent to the Papal Nimero M Vienna instructions to urge at the forthcoming Meeting of the Austrian Bishops the Pressing need for devising some means tor relieving the necessitous people. LKIPSIO, Wednesday. The authorities here have issued a notice that work will be provided for the unemployed, and the that bread will to-day be distributed to the necessitous, but after that no further distribution Will take place.

THE SAD DISASTER AT CLECKHEATON. The inquiry was remedat LiversedgeonSatur- day regarding the circumstances attending the death of 14 persons who were killecf by the fall of chimney at Cleckheaton. William Elsey, in cross-examination, stated that during the time the men were removing the bricks to repair the chimney no supports were put into the hollow places. "-slay. Barraclough, the lessor of the mill, stated that tho chimney had always leaned towards the mill since the tenancy commenced. His first intimation con- cerning the condition of the chimney was five or six weeks ago, when Isherwood said, "Go and look at the chimney. There are some cracks in it." He observed that the cracks, which were of a zigzag form, commenced a yard from the ground, and extended upwards for two yards. The, cracks were not new, and he did not apprehend any danger, bat thought the ohimney should be attended to, and accordingly spoke to Messrs Thornton, and they said they were not aware of the chimney's condi- tion. Witness remarked that prompt attention was necessary, for if loss of life followed it would be a serious matter. The day before the stack felt he spoke to Mr Rawdon Thornton, who assured him he had had it examined inside, and there was no danger. The holes at the bottom had been built up, and when the bad outside bricks had been replaced thechimney would be as good as new. But for these assuranbes he would have closed the mill. The inquest was again adjourned.

SERIOUS FIRE AT EDINBURGH. Narrow Escapes. A fire broke out early on Tuesday morning in a house in Royal-terrace, Edinburgh, occupied by Mr Ralph Copeland, professor of astronomy at Edinbmgh University, and Astronomer Royal of Scotland, and Mr Copeland and his family had to escape by means of a ladder made of blankets and sheets. Much damage was done to tho house, and the valuable collection of astronomical works, bequeathed to the nation by the late Earl cf Crawford, was slightly injured by water be- fore they could be removed from the burning premises.

DEATH OF SIR HUDSON KINAHAN. The Press Association's Maryborough corres- pondent telegraphs :—Sir Hudson Kinahan, Bart., high-sheriff of Queen's County, who was seized with paralysis while officially engaged at Maryborough Assizes, died here on Tuesday. The deceased, who was born November 27th, 1828, and was the first baronet created in 1887, was senior partner of the firm Messrs Kjn&han and Sons, distillers, of Dublin. He was a justice of tbe peace for County Cork, ana a director of numerous companies. He is succeeded in the title by his eldest son, Edward Hudson, who was born November 3rd, 1865.

THE PEARL CASE. Trial of Mrs Osborne. PRISONER PLEADS GUILTY. PAINFUL SCENES IN COURT. THE SENTENCE. LONDON, Wednesday. .Thefcase ^against Mrs Osborne, the wife of Captain 'Osborne, came on at the Old Bailey, to-day, before Mr Justice A. L. Smith. She was described in the calendar as Florence Ethel Osborne, aged 26, and the indictment charged her with stealing two pairs of earrings, the property of George Hargreaves, and also with committing wilful and corrupt perjury. The doors of the court were besieged some time beforeten o'clock. The gallery was occupied principally by ladias.candthe court was crowded. At ten minutes to ten Captain Osborne entered alone. Shortly afterwards Mrs Hargreaves came into court and took a seat as the solicitors' table. Mr Forrest Fulton and Mr C. F. Gill, instructed by Mr Frayling, of the Treasury, prosecuted Sir Charles Russell, Q.C., Mr Matthews, and Mr Lewis Coward defended. Mr Justice A. L. Smith took bis seat at 10.30. A PLEA Of GUILTY. The prisoner was then conducted into the dock from the cells below by a femaJe warder. All eyes were turned upon her, but she took no notice of her surroundings. She applied her handkerchief to her eyes* and cried bitterly. -Upon the Clerk reading over to her the charges in the indictment she in a low voice pleaded guilty to both of them. The plea could not be heard on the Bench, and was repeated by the warder in the dock. Mr Forrest Fulton then rose, amid profound silence, and said In this case, my lord, I appear with my learned friend, Mr Gill, instructed by the Solicitor to the Treasury and the Public Prosecutor, and I will state one or two of the circumstances connected with the case. His Lordship: I have read all the depositions. Mr Fulton, and unless you wish to address me, I am fully alive to all the circumstances. Mr Fulton All I wish to say, then, my lord, is With regard to the perjury, of course, that is the charge which induced the Public Prosecutor to take the case up. As far as the larceny itself was concerned, probably that would have been left to private persons to deal with. The action of the Public Prosecutor was taken m consequence of the attempt to prevent the due course of justice by commencing an action for slander in connection with which the perjury was com- mitted. But for the action of the defendant in the case of Osborne and Hargreave, no doubt, as far as the Public Prosecutor is concerned, we should not be concerned in the matter. ADDRESS BY SIR CHABLKL RCSSBLL. Sir Charles Russell then rose to address the Court on behalf of the prisoner. The learned counsel, who spoke in a very subdued voice, and with evident emotion, said: My lord, Iappear, with my learned friends Mr Charles Matthews and Mr Coward, on behalf of the prisoner, and I would ask permission to say a word or two in this very remarkable and very distressing c.1Se. As regards the original act of the abstrac- tion and theft of these jewels, those who know very fully tlie facts of the ease found themselves utterly at a loss to suggest any motive whatever for the act. There was no motive in any shape or form, and those who know this lady —her intimate friends—have been driven to the conclusion that the act must have been committed by her in something approaching temporary aber- ration indeed, they have formed that opinion partly because, as I am instructed, it is a fact that this lady had been a short time before this occurrence unquestionably treated medically as suffering from hysteria. 'Your lordship knows from the depositions the subsequent history of the case. Mrs Osborne's friends, who believed implicitly in her, sought the earliest opportunity that seemed to present itself to make an attempt to vindicate her reputation. She assented to that attempt by bringing an action for slander. Probably, woman as she is she had not thought out to its almost necessary consequences the course she was then entering upon. She probably thought in some vague way that it might be the means of rein- stating her in the opinion of her friends without (as the result showed) involving, under an impli- cation of guilt, an entirely innocent person in that connection. It is, I think, material to tell your lordship one fact. The action was originally brought against Major Hargreaves alone for certain alleged slanderous words used by him. In the original action Major Hargreaves had entered a plea denying the words imputed and pleading privilege. He did not plead justification for the words. At that time this lady was anxious that the case should be terminated, but she was overborne by the enthu- siasm of her friends, by the implicit confidence they had in her, and Mrs Hargreaves having been Supposed to have uttered words of a slanderous character she was joined in the action, and she pleaded justification of her words. At that time this'lady married, and tbere can be no doubt that the whole proceedings in initiation and subse- quently were mainly thejact of her friends acting, as it is quite natural they should, under the implicit belief of her innocence. Yuur lordships will also notice that, in point of fact, although the state- ments are now admitted to be false statements, made by the prisoner at the bar in her evidence, before the action these false statements had been retracted by her and at her own in. stance. Counsel were accordingly instructed to withdraw from the case, and the matter was not left to a jury. That trial over I will draw your lordship's atten- tion to what has since happened. The husband and friends of this lady desired to do all that could be done, if not entirely to undo that mis- chief, at least render it as little harmful as, possible, and I will ask your lordship to allow me to read some correspondence that has passed with the Public Prosecutor and those who represented the prisoner at the bar. On the 20th January, 1892, Messrs Wontner, who are solicitors to Mrs and Captain Osborne, wrote to the Public Prose- cutor a letter in which they say :— At the reqnest of Mr Elliott, the grandfather of Mrs Osborne, w« beg to forward you £ 250 in notes, being moneys found at the house where Mrs Osborne was living, and apparently being the proceeds of the gold changed into nofes also our cheque for £300. which makes up the S550 lost by Messrs is pink and Son, and which comes from Mr Elliott, who desires in this way to repair the wrong done by bis granddaughter. Captain Osborne addressed correspondence (which I am now about to read) to the same quarter, namely, the Public Prosecutor :— Sir,—My wife is most anxious to surrender herself for trial upon the charges contained in the warrant which, at your instance, I am informed, has been issued against her. [That is an error, my lord. The warrant is issued at the instance of the City Police.] But her health is so precarious owing to her present condition of pregnancy tha.t I have absolutely forbid- den her to endanger her own life and that of her child by rendering herself liable to pass in prison the time between this and the early days of June, when she expects her confinement. This being her first child, I am anxious she should have the best medical aid that can be procured. Messrs Wontner have received instructions to forward JE550 with which to defray Messrs Spink's loss of money given by them at their premises m Gracecliurch-street in February. In addi- tion to this sum £624 has been forwarded for reim- bursement of costs. Arrangements have been made to pay the costs in Hargreaves versus Spink, and arrangements also have been made by Messrs Wontner, to pa.y the costs incurred by Major andMrs Hargreaves in the action of Osborne against Hargreaves, tried December, 1891. Thus you will appreciate that Mrs Hargreaves has got back her jewels, Messrs Spink have been paid back the money they advanced upon them, and the co ts of Major and Mrs HargAave also will be paid. Under these circumstances is it possible that my wife's surrender may be post- poned until after the child has been bom, that in the meantime she may not be harrassed by 000,. stant fear, terrible enough to a person in strong health but more trying to a person in her condition ? You need fear no departure from this undertaking. If my wife likes, she shall surrender herself to justice. Is it asking too much for a delay, which is not inconsistent with the dictates of humanity —Yourobedient ervant, C. A. OSBORNE. To that letter came an answer from the Public Prosecutor, against which no complaint can be made. It was a courteous statement to the effec that they could not enter into any arrangement of the kind, and that the lady should surrender. On the 29th January Captain Osborne wrote;— I regret your inabilty to accede to my request. I Tiave had an opportunity of placing this new aspect of affairs before my wife, and it only remains to inform you of the course of action Mrs Osbomedesires to adopt. She is convinced she ought to surrender forthwith, in spite of considerations that have induced me to resist her hitherto. She thinks in so doing she will rightly consult my interests. I will therefore bring her back to England with all possible speed consistent with her state of health. Cot Smith wfll receive a notification of the day and hour of her arrival in England. Do not doubt that Colonel Smith Wilt use his own discretion where the airest shall take place. If this could be arranged to take place at my father's house I should esteem it a favour.—Your obedient servant, C. A. OSBORNE. Counsel continuing:—She was brought by her husband to Dover and was taken into custody by the city police, who subsequently brought' her before the chief magistrate. I am informed, your lordship, that as far as the theft is concerned for technical reasons the indictment could not be pro- ceeded with. Mr Forrest Fulton (interposing): My lord that it is not so there isjurisdiction to try. Sir Charles Russell: Well, my lord, my friend Mr Matthews knows much more about the point than I do, and he advises that there would be no jurisdiction. However, we will not enter into any discussion upon that. The jewels have been returned, the money has been returned, and in each instance I would remind your lord- ship that the persons concerned have been reimbursed for outlay. As regards the imputations, unjust and groundless, unfor- tunately, made against certain persons, these have been withdrawn, and Major and Mrs Hargreaves particularly in the course of the trial, completely vindicated their character. As regards the present state of health of the prisoner, your lordship has means of ascertaining from the prison officials what that is. I need say nothing about it. While I make no appeal to your lordship, because this is a lady by birth and education and by position, yet it is rght that I sbonld remind you that in dealing with a person of that kind identity of punishment does not mean equality of punish- ment, and that to a person brought up as Mrs Osborne has been, a person placed in the position in which she has been placed, the humiliation to which she has been exposed and the anguish which she must have suffered in loss of self-respect and in the confidence of her friends and the knowledge of the grievous wrong she has inflicted upon those nearest and dearest to her, to say nothing of the period during which she has already been IP prispufcdtt bm already yumsbed for the grievous faults she has committed, and I leave your lordship to deal with the case as justice may require.—Sir Charles Russell then resumed his seat. PATHETIC APPEAL BY MBS HARGKEAYES. Mrs Hargreaves hero rose at the solicitors' table and turned towards the learned judge. Speaking in a voice broken with emotion she said My lord, as I and my husband have been the chief sufferers in this case His Lordship (interposing): I don't think I can hear you, Mrs Hargreaves, unless you are going to plead for mercy. Mrs Hargreaves (in tones of urgent appeal): I am, my lord, with all my heart. I have known' Ethel and have loved her all my life, and I am per- fectly convinced that she could not have been in herright mindwhenshedidwhatshedid. Ibegyour lordship to deal with her as leniently as you can. [During these remarks the prisoner sobbed audibly, and a second female warder stepped quietly up to her side. Many ladies in court were much affected, and sympathetically gave way to tears.] The Clerk of Arraigns (to the prisoner): Florence Ethel Osborne, have you anything to say why the Court should not give judgment ? THE JUDGE'S SUMMING UP. Prisoner (in a voice scarcely audible): Nothing. His Lordship thereupon proceeded to pass sen- tence. He said Florence Ethel Osborne, you have pleaded guilty to the felony of jewellery, and you have also pleaded guilty to an indictment for perjury. You stole the goods of your friends when you were staying with them. Those jewels you converted into money, and that money you appropriated to your own use. Upon the finger of suspicion pointing toyou yon commenced an action in the Queen's bench Division for the purpose of vindicating your character. As the learned counsel,Si r Charle. Russell, has said to-day you first brought it against Major Hargreaves, and then MrsHargeaves was added as a defendant in that case. In that action you falsely and corruptly swore to facts to lead the jury who tried the case to the conclusion that you bad not stolen the goods, and for days you sat by youi eminent counsel instructing him that you were not the thief, and making it necessary for him to do what he did do, and to suggest that you were not the thief, and that your friends were. I myself do not know what would have been the result of that action had it not been for the inter- position of a witness who was able to produce documents with your endorsement which showed beyond all doubt the side on which the truth lay. All I can say is that if you had succeeded by your wilful and corrupt perjury in obtaining a verdict in your favour, your old friends, Major and Mrs Hargreaves would have ii that court with a stain of in- delible ignominy. Fortunately that has not been so. These are serious matters. I am aware of your condition, and I am aware of your frail health. I am aware that all the jewellery has been returned, that the money which you miss- appropriated has also been restored, and, as Sir Charles Russell tells me, all the costs have been paid of the persons who were neces- sarily put to expense in the matter. Now you have been some time in prison. You have, I notice, surrendered yourself to justice, and have confessed your guilt. AU these matters I am willing to take into consideration, and also that a strong recommendation to mercy has been made by Mrs Hargreaves, who of all others bad been most injured in this case. I wish to state that the niaxiniumjpunishment which the Legislature enacts for perjury is seven years' penal servitude (sensa- tion 10 court). I am not going to pass any such sentence upon you, but I know that the sentence I am about to pass must necessarily, to a person in your position and of your education, be one of great severity. The punishment that I am about to inflict upon you is that you be imprisoned such hard labour as your condition and frail health may enable you to perform during your imprisonment you will be attended by the prison doctors and the medical men of the gaol— the sentence of the Court is that you be im- prisoned and kept to hard labour for nime calendar months. THE CLOSING SCKNE. On hearing the sentaoce, the prisoner com- pletey gave way. She was seated in the dock a.t the time, and would, apparently, have fallen but for the support of the female warders who stood on each side of her. Tney then raised her gently from her seat, and, each taking an arm, led her from the dock to the cells below. The prisoner, who seemed scarcely able to walk, wept bitterly, and many of her lady friends and others ill court were moved to tears.

STRANGE DEATH OFTWOMAN AT CARDIFf. Allegations of Neglect. The evidence went to show that the deceased woman had been in failing health for two years, suffering from erysipelas and rheumatic fever. She was of weak intellect, and of very dirty habits. Dr Plain saw her in November last, and Dr Wallace bad also seen her, but since that time no modic"-l man had been called in until Satur- day, when she was in a dying condition. Leah Jane Korman, a cousin of the deceased, was called, and tho Coroner severely questioned her QfJ to the condition of tbe-4ecefwed. Sht9 was covered, said tho witness, with vermin, and was altogether in a very filthy condition. About three weeks ago she became very stout and bloated, but soon afterwards she resumed her normal appearance. Witness did not think any- thing was the matter. The Coroner: Then you must have been very stupid. Dr Plain deposed that he saw the deceased woman on the 18th November last. He was called in on behalf of the parish authorities to examine her as to her mental state. He found that the condition of her mind did not justify him in ordering her removal to an asylum. She had suffered from softening of the brain. When called in on Saturday he found Mrs Harding quite un- conscious, and evidently in a dying condition. In view of this he did not prescribe for her. Her skin was covered with vermin, and she was in a very filthy state. In his opinion death was caused by an effusion of blood. The Coroner: I don't feel satisfied in my mind at all, and I will adjourn the inquest. The inqu1 was resumed on Wednesday in the Nisi Prius Courtof the Town-hall, Cardiff, before Mr Coroner Reece, The first witness called was Isabella Bums. the step-daughter of the deceased woman, who said she was a domestic servant. She was at home for two months about four months ago.—The Coroner: How was your mother then Absent-minded, sir.—How was her bodily health? She had a very good appe- tite, but complained at times of pain.— Was she of dirty habits then 1 Yes, sir, on account of her mind.—Did your father treat her kindly ? Yes, as far as I could see.—Did she have enough to eat? Yes, sir.—Didn't you notice her getting to look ill and thin ? No, sir; she had been like that for a long, while.—Did her mind seem to be getting worse? Yes. —Was she able to dress herself ? Some- times she would and sometimes she wouldn't.—Did Mrs Norman attend to her ? Yes, sir.—Did she treat her kindly? Yes.—As far as you know, she had enough to eat ? Yes, as far as I could see.—Did she ever complain to you at all of being hungry ? No, sir.—She used to suffer from diarrhoea ?—Yes, at times. Emma Jones, a widow living in the same house with the deceased, was next called. She bad been living with the Hardings for nearly five months. The Coroner Mrs Harding was partly out of her mind ? Oh, yes —-Was she treated kindly ?— Yes. very kindly.—Was she supplied with enough food ? Yes, sir, plenty. I used to take it to her myself.- Didn't she seem much worse on the day before she died ? No, I didn't notice anything. The diarrhoea was worse on Saturday. She^iad suffered from it off and on ever since I had known her. Witiiess further stated that ah. was not home on Friday, but when she came back, she took her a cup of tea and a shceof bread and butter.—The Coroner: When you took her that did she seem to want more ? No, sir.—Had she had anything else V™r'ng the day? I can't say, I was not heme. When I took her a second cup of tea on Saturday I noticed that she was much worse, and I went for a doctor after telling her husband.—-Did her husband go for a doctor ? No, sir, he was with her in the bedroom. I called at four doctors, but they were all out. Dr Plain was the first doctor I saw. Mrs Norman used to look after, her, but she was in a very dirty state with all that vermin about her. I never saw her so dirty as she was on Saturday. Dr Albert Plain deposed that he had made a post-mortem examination of the deceased. Ex- ternally there were no marks of injury. The stomach contained a small amount of digested food, and was of normal appearance. In his opinion death was due to softening of the brain, which caused want of assimilation of food and diarrhoea. The Coroner In her almost constant state of diarrhoea don't you think anyone could have seen that she was in need of medical aid should have thought so. In summing up the Coroner said: I am glad to say that the case is not so bad as I thought. There can bo no doubt that from the examination which Dr Plain made the deceased did not die from want of food. The only question is whether there was any neglect on the part of the husband. No doubt it was neglect not to get a doctor. Decidedly the husband was to blame for this. If he could not afford he could have got the parish doctor to see his wife. IIe (the Coroner) did not think, at the satne time, that it was wilful. Probably it arose from ignorance. The jury found a verdict in accordance with the medical evidence, with a rider that they thought the husband was to blame for not having secured medical assistance. -='-

SHOCKING DISCOVERY IN A drain. An inquest was held"* London on Tuesday ccn- corning the death of 5, l*d of a single woman named Jacobs. The ctiua s mutilated remains were found in a ?ini Pentonville last Wednesday. The medical evidence wont to show that deceased had bad a separate existence, but that it was possible the child was accidentally suffocated by fallingin the Pan of a closet, and that the mother thee 1e. UP the body to dispose of it. The jury, taking this view, returned a verdict of death^frofl1 accl"ental causes.

DEATH Of MR8 PRINGLE. We regret to record the death of Mrs Pringle, the wife of Dr Pnogle. the Medical Superin- tendent of the Glamorgan County Asvluin, Bridgend. The deceased lady had gone to Bir- mingham to undergo an operation, under which unfortunately she succumoed. Mrp Pringle was greatly esteemed, and much sympathy will be felt for her husband and young family in their be- renvemeofc,

SOUTH WALES NEWS. CARDIFF. CARDIFF HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY. -The annual general meeting of the Cardiff Horticultural Society was held at the Town-hall on Monday evening, when Mr A. Pcttigrew occupied the chair. There were also present, among others, Councillor W. J. Trounce. Messrs Phelps, Pearce, Crossling, Beames, Smart, J. D. Morgan, S. Mor- gan, Boone, Medhurst, and Bradley. The balancc sheet was presented. It showed a deficit of £20 on tho horticultural fund and a deficit of £10 on the second display of fireworks. The financial statement was approved and adopted. Mr Pettigrew was elected as chairman for the ensuing year, and Mr J. Todd as treasurer, Mr H. Gillett being appointed as secretary. Votes of thanks passed to Mr Lewis, who was chairman last year, and to Mr Blackmore, who resigned the offise of assistant secretary.— It was decided to ask these gentlemen to serve on the committee. It was decided to hold the next show of the society on the 17th and 18th August next. THE CASTLE WALL.—Two more sculptured animals have been added to those already orna- menting the outer wall of Cardiff Castle, the one being a hyena and the other a specimen of the wolf family. They are in very similar positions to the others, and are so carefully carved and finished as to present a most natural appearance. SWANSEA. FUNKKAL OF THE REV JOHN THOMAS.—There was buried at the Swansea Cemetery on Monday afternoon, amidst many manifestations of deep regret, the Rev John Thomas, of Hafod-road, pastor of Hill Congregational Clmrch. The deceased was originally a weaver, and carried on a large business at Carmarthen-road and at the Market as a Welsh flannel merchant. He was a consistent member at Ebenezer Chapel, doing much good work as a local preacher, and was ordained by the influence of the late Dr Thomas Rees. He then took charge of the little chapel at Poppet Hill, and under his direction the cause so flourished tha.t it became necessary to enlarge tho building. At his funeral on Monday there were 19 carriages, and above 100 members of the congregation followed bis remains on foot. NEWPORT. STOCK SALE.—The annual sale of stock and implements at Gaer Facb, took place on Tues- day afternoon. The horned stock sold at from B21 to £25 each onan average; the sh&ep realised high prices, and the poultry and pigeons also commanded good rates. The light machinery and implements also went well, but the heavy ones were knocked down under cost.—Mr Thos. Parry, the auctioneer, presided at the luncheon, which was served in tho large barn, and was well supported by neighbouring farmers. The "Health of Mr C. D. Phillips was the principal toast. FATAL ACCIDENJT.—A man named Morgan, a labourer, who was thrown from a horse whilst riding on the Cardiff-road, Newport, a fortnight, since, and sustained severe internal injuries, died in Newport Infirmary, whither he was taken, at an early hour on Tuesday morning. CAMERA CLUB.— The first annual meeting of this promising young club of amateur photographers was held on Monday Mr G. H. Llewellyn, one of the vice-presidents, in the chair. The annual report indicated that although the year's work had not been attended with the fullest success in every direction, the results achieved were such as no photographic institution in its infantile stage need feel ashamed of. The active membership was 33, and the honorary h^t 33. The technical information and experience exchanged at the fortnightly meetings were referred to. and it was hoped the contemplated provision of a dark room would tend to a more full apprecia- tion of the advantages attending the demonstra- tions. The most successful feature of the club's year had been the free laiitem exhibitions, four of which had been given, and the two public lec- tures. The second of the last-named resulted in a financial loss. A photographic snrvey of Mon- mouthshire was a project which the club should hold fast to, and the summer meetings should be utilised for the purpose, the adoption of a com- petitive scheme in connection with survey prints and lantern slides being recommended as an incentive to serious work in the direction indi- cated.—The report was adopted, and tbe Execu- tives Committee was revised, and strengthened by the addition of new names. NEATH. TOWN COUNCIL.—-The monthly meeting of the Neath Town Council was held on Monday, under the presidency of the Mayor (Mr J. D. Llewellyn). The consideration of the tenders for the Parade was adjourned, Mr Hibbeit having to get the consent ot some people who were abroad to the proposed sale of the Stores.—It was decided to construct the pavement on the part of Maesyrhaf Cemetery acquired by the Council under the new improvement scheme of concrete instead QÍ stone, tbe tender of Mr Dodd (£31j.0) being accepted.— Tho tender of Mr Dodd (£85) for the Melincry- than improvements was also accepted.—Mrs Bealc applied for a licence for a wooden structure proposed to be erected and used as a theatre in Windsor-road, and after a long discussion the application was refused by 10 votes to 3. CARMARTHEN. THE RATES OF THE BOROUGH.—A special meet- ing of the Carmarthen Town Council was held on Monday afternoon the Mavot- (Mr Thomas Jenkins) presiding. The fdrfowing rates were ordered to be levied:—Water, 6d 10 the £ for domestic, and 8d in the £ for manufacturing, pur- poses, which would produce £510; borough, 6d in the B, which would give £870: and district, 2, 3d In tb which would make £2,970. Last year the rates were 7d and 9d, 6d, and 2s respectively THE BISHOP SUFPBAGAN.—It is understood that tho Bishop Suffragan of Swansea (the Vicar of St Peter's) will go into residence as Canon of St. David's early next month. TENBY. COUNCIL MEETING.—A special meeting of the Tpwn Council was held on Wednesday, the Mayor (Mr C. J. Williams) in the chair. The Corporation seal was affixed to certain mort- gages in connection with Potter's Field improve- ments for the sum of £1,600, and another amount of £80. The consideration of a memorial ask- ing for the abolition of St. Margaret's Fa.ir took place, and, on the proposition of Mr Jenkins, seconded by Mr Farley, it was resolved that the patitioners have power to poll the town upon the question of its abolition. The Estates Com- mittee's report recommending the Corporation to contribute to the new road from the Norton to the South and was read, and £100 was voted toward carrying it out, the promoters having raised by subscription nearly £400. LLANDILO. THE GRUESOME DISCOVERT. — A post-mortem examination was made on Saturday last on the body of tbe child found in the churchyard the previous day, Drs Lloyd and Morgan, who made the examination, expressed it as their opinion, at the inquest which was subsequently beld, that the child had been stillborn," and an open verdict was returned. ABERDARE. THE EISTEDDVDD. — It has transpired that "John Hampden," the co-winner of-the prize for the poem at the above eisteddvod on Monday, was the Rev H. T. Jacob, Bethel, Aberdare. CAERPHILLY. STOPPAGE OF A COLLIRRT.—The Caerphilly Colliery, which is better known as tbe Wernddu, w«s closed on Saturday, all the colliors having been paid off on Friday. PORTHCAWL. MINISTERIAL.—Last Sunday, March 6tb, the Rev J. H. Miles, of Cardiff, entered upon his duties as paster of the English Baptist Church in the above place, and preached both morning and evening. MERTHYR. BAPTIST CYMANKA.—On Monday the annual musical festival of the Baptists of Merthyr, Cefn, and Aborcanaid were held at the Tabernacle Chapel. The proceedings during the morning and evening were presided over by Mr R. Jones, and the attendances were exceedingly large. ILLNESS OF 1tfR. SOUTHEY.—We regret to hear that Mr H. W. Southey has been confined lately to his house in consequence of the recurrence of an attack of influenza. LLANGENNECH. THE NEW VICAR.—The new vicar of theparish, the Rev D. Da vies, B.A., lace curate of St. Peter's Church, Llanelly, preached at the parish church on Sunday. In the morning he delivered a sermon in English and in Welsh in the evening, the sacred edificc being crowded at both services. The rev. gentleman, who is a most acceptable preacher, was very warmly welcomed by the parishioners on his first appearance in the village, and it was quite evident from the kind expressions and well wishes with which he was universally greeted that this sel-sctiop by Mr Alderman David Evans, of tbe Park, is very popular and acceptable to the village folk, who are anxious that h" should at once commence his duties. It is quite probable that he will do so in the course of a couple of weeks, instead of two months as previously stated. YSTRAD. "SPRAGGING" COAL IN COLLIBHIES. —At the Ystrad police-court on Monday, Idris Waters, collier, employed at the Fernhill Colliery, Blaen- rhondda, was summoned for a breach of tbe 22nd rule of the General Rules of the colliery. Mr D. R. Jones, manager of the works, appeared for the prosecution.—It appeared from the evidence that the defendant, who was a practical collw, was employed in a stall, known as a "face slip," 17 feet wide, when Mr Sims, Deputy Inspector of Mines, and manager of the colliery, Mr D. R. Jones, put in an appearance. The inspector immediately called the defendant's attention to the 22nd Rule, which provides that a miner in such a working place should erect a sprag against the "face" of thews1 at a distance not exceeding six feet. The defendant had erected only one sprag whilst be should bave fixed two more. The defendant requested the manager to overlook his negligence, promising to attend to his duties in future. The deputy-inspector of mines empha- tically told the manager that unless he would prosecute the workman, tha Home Office would institute proceedings against the manage- ment—Defendant pleaded guilty, and was -fined £1 including costs. BHFCON. FUNERAL OF THE LATE HEV B. MORRIS.—The funeral of the Rev Benjamin Morris took place on Tuesday afternoon at Breoon Cemetery. The attendance was large and representative. At Bethel Chape], where the deceased officiated for many years, there was a special service prior to the interment at the Cemetery. The deceased was in his 79th year. The children of the various schools in the town will be invited to attend the ceremony. LOCAL BOARD. —The monthly meeting of this Board was held on Tuesday night, Rev H. Williams presiding. It was decided to issue a precept. to the rating authorities for £450, and it was resolved that a cheque for £310 be signed for Mr Benjamin Jenkins, builder, Brecon, on account of the Mount-street Board Schools' con- tract. A very satisfactory increase was reported in the average daily attendance at tbe elementary schools of the town, it being about the highest on record. CADOXTON. THE WKNVOE RAILWAY FATAUTT.—In connec- tion with the unfortunate railway fatality at Wenvoe, a meeting was held at the Cadoxton Church Mission Room on Tuesday night, the Rev E. Morris (rector) presiding, when it was decided to open a fund in aid of the relatives of the men who were killed. Messrs Rogers were appointed secretaries. BEDWAS. PRESENTATION TO A PASTOR.—On Monday evening an interesting presentation meeting was held at the Welsh Baptist Chapel, when the pastor of the church, the Rev M. James (Ivor- wyson), was presented by the members and friends of the above church with a handsome oil painting of himself and a purso of gold as a token of respect on the 20th year of bis ministry in the place. The meeting was largely attended, and Mr William Jones, Sevastopol cottage, pre- sided. NEWBRIDGE. CANTATA —A cantata, 1 David, the Shepherd Boy," by G. F. Root, was performed" on Monday evening at the English Baptist Chapel, by the Sunday-school choir, under the leadership of Mr Lewis Thomas, to an appreciative and crowded audience. The artistes were—Misses Bowens, Abercarn Mrs L. Thomas, Newbridge; Messrs W. Thomas, Abercarn; A. Jones, F. Adams, A. Knight, T. Vaughan, Newbridge. The accom- panists were Miss E. Jones and Z. GRAND CONCERT.—A concert was given at the Public-hall on Wednesday evening by the "Boys' Brigade" (1st Newport, Mon., Company), assisted by Mrs A. W. Dawson (Newport), Miss Charlotte Griffiths (Newport). Messrs G. Richards, Charles Clements, George Reynolds, and Edwin Gabb (4th Volunteer Battalion South Wales Borderers), Newport. Miss M E. Jones, Newport, was the accompanist. The Drum and Fife Band, under the leadership of Mr E. Gabb, gave selections, and the boys of the Company went through a number of exercises.—Councillor George Jones, Abercarn, presided.—The proceeds were in aid of the Calvmistic Methodist Chapel, Newbridge. The wedding was a very quiet one owing to the recent death of the bride's father. GILWERN. WEDDING.—On Wednesday a marriage was solemnised between Mr Alfred Price, station- master, Gilwern, and Miss S. A. Price. Beaufort, at Brynmawr.—During Mr Price's six years stay at Gilwern, he has succeeded in making a large circle of friends. • EBBW VALE. BENEFIT CONCKHT.—A concert was given at the Institute Hall, Ebbw Vale, on Tuesday evening, under the auspices of the Wfyt Monmouth Con- stitutional Association, the proceeds to be given in aid of the widows of James Andrews and David Smith. Mr Meredyth occupied tbe chair, and in tbe interval addressed the audience. A capital programme of music was rendered. PONTYPRIDD. WOUNDING AT FERNDALE.— At the Pontypridd police-court, on Wednesday—before Mr Ignatius Williams (stipendiary)—Henry Bridge, of Fern- dale, was charged with wounding Thomas Priqe. —The complainant said that on Tuesday he was in the Victoria Hotel, when defendant came in and struck him with his fist, cutting him over the eye. Dr Pntchard stitched the wound. No words had passed between them before the blow was struck.— Fined £2 and costs. STONE-THROWING AND ITS SEQUEL.—Thomas Sandford, of Llwynypia, charged Richard Wil- liams, of the same neighbourhood, with illegally wounding him. Complainant deposed that on Monday evening he was passing the Miskin Hotel, Trealaw, when he saw a large crowd on the road, and crossed over to see what was the matter. Just then the defendant, who was in the crowd, hurled a large stone, which struck him on the head, knocking him down senseless. His ear was split, and his face cut open.—Defendant said that be threw the stone at the crowd, and not at the complainant—The Stipendiary said that the offence was a most serious one. Defendant was fined S5. MOUNTAIN ASH. INQUEST.—On Monday, at the Cresselly Inn, Mr J. R. Rbys, coroner, held an inquiry touching the death of David Price, who fell down dead in the engine-room of the Penrbiwceiber Colliery on Thursday morning.—After hearing the evidence, the jury returned a verdict of "Death from natural causes."

INTERMEDIATE EDUCATION. AT ABERGAVENNY. A public meeting was beld at the Town-ball on Tuesday night, to consider a proposal of the Monmouthshire Joint Education Committee to establish and maintain an intermediate school for 60 girls at Abergavenny, on condition that the town provided a suitable freehold site, and con- tributed the sum of £300 towards the cost of the building, to which tbecommittee would contribute £900. Mr J. Bishop (chairman of the Improve- ment Commissioners) presided, and said that all the information he was at present able to give them was that the minimum cost of educa- tion at the proposed school would be B5 per annum and the maximum JS6. He was glad to be able to say that, thanks to the noble generosity of Mr W. Jenkins, of the Willows, they had been furnished with a piece of freehold land. (Cheers.) He thought there would not be much difficulty in raising the required sum of £300. The circulars which the Commissioners had sent round bad met with very favourable responses. His Grace the Duke of Beaufort had promised £25; Mrs Gordon Canning, £5: and Mr Price, Cae Derwen, £10. (Applause.)—Mr Iltyd Gardner moved the following resolution :—"That this meeting tenders a cordial vote of thanks to the Joint Education Committee for the county of Mon- mouth for having selected Abergavenny as one of its centres for the establishment of an inter- mediate school for girls, under the provisions of the Welsh Intermediate Act, 1889."— Dr. S. H. Steel, moved as an amendment that instead of the words tenders a cordial vote of thanks to the Joint Education Committee," &c., the words receives with gratification the intimation thift the Joint Education Committee," &c., should be sub- stituted, as he considered that the committee had only done its duty and that consequently no thanks were required.—Mr Gardner said that he had not drawn up the proposition, but he thought that it R-ould be very ungracious to with- draw thethanKs.—The amendmentwasllltimately put to the meeting and carried unanimously. The Rev S. R. Young proposed a j hearty vote of thanks to Mr Jenkins for his prompt and generous offer.—Mr Edwin Foster seconded, which was carried with accla- mation.—Mr Foster said that the area was 2,666 square yards, whereas that upon which the British School stood was but 1^600.—Mr J. E. Thomas moved a resolution pledging the meeting eo raise £300 towards the building, which was carried.—Mr Gardner suggested that a voluntary 3d rate on tbe freeholders should be made.—The Rev S. R. Young pointed out that this was a voluntary rate, and not one levied by the Com- missioners in the ordinary way.—Mr Gardner's proposition, after some further discussion, was put to the meeting, and carried.—The usual votes of thanks concluded the business.

THE LATEST ADDITION TO THE NAVY. The Press Association's Sheerness correspondent telegraphs: Thenewsteelotrpedogunboat Gleaner was completed at Sheerness Dockyard on Tues- day and passed out as ready for foreign service. The Gleaner has been just over three years in building. and has cost £65,000. Sbe steams 20 knots per hour, and is equipped with two 4.7iD, guns, four three-pounder guns, and five 14in. torpedo tubes. She is the fastest gunboat of the Sharpshooter class.

R UNLICENSED SOLICITORS. The St. Asaph magistrates on Monday fined v\ atkin W. Parry, of RhVI, jB5 and costs for practising as a solicitor without a licence. Charles W. Bell, of Rhyl, was fined JS15 and costs for a hke offence^

THE POLICE COURTS. Assaulting the Poiice-at Penarth. Several charges of being drunk, disorderly, and assaulting police were preferred at Penarth police-court on Monday, before Messrs J. S. Corb.tt, J. Pyke Thompson, and Valentine Trayes.—Sidney Cousins, a young fellow who appeared to be ashamed of his position, pleaded guilty to being disorderly on Saturday night. Constable Evans found prisoner engaged in a regular stand-up fight inMghan- street, Penarth. His coat was off, and tHe con- stable had great difficulty in separating t-beit. He was taken int.. custody, but not without mueL trouble. A fine of 5s and costs was inflicted.— Henry Randell was asked to explain why he had ill-treated Officer Davis, who was endeavùurine h. make peace between him and hie wife. Did he strike her?" queried the Clerk. No, ho was only abusing This distinction raised asmIlc all rver the court., but the gallant guardian of the peace failed to ste I the joke. H was abusing her," he" added, by calling her names." The prisc-ntr resented the policeman's interference, and kicked him in divers places. Marks on the officer's legs bore conclusive testimony to the defendant's kicking powers as well as to the. weight of his boots, which were instruments of no mean orcter. Corroborative testimony was given by another constable, who said that the accuscd was brought to the station staggering drunk." A fine of 10s and costs was imposed, in default of payment 14 days' imprisonment to be undergone. Alleged Burglary at Cadoxton. On Monday John McConel was brought up before the Penarth magistrates and charged with breaking and entering the dwelling-house and shop of James Webb, of 29, Holm-street, Cadox ton, on the 25th January. The prosecutor said that on the previous evening the windows and doors of his shop were all closed, and most of them were locked. Next morning he noticed the back window open, and missed a seaman's discharge book, a dozen singlets, three grey shirts,a woollen singlet—. The Accused (interposing): "He doesn't know what he missed, sir." Prosecutor (continu- ing): A pair of woollen drawers, and a canvas bag containing several articles of clothmg. The contents of the window had been strewed about in confusion. The back door was open the catch of the kitchen window was also pushed back. The total value of the articles missed, none of which had been traced, was J33 10s.—William Robinson, who, like the accused, boarded with the prosecutor, said that early on the Tuesday morning he had occasion to get Xip from bed to go downstairs, where he found the prisoner with a bundle of clothes under his arm. Later on he saw the defendant leaving the house with the bundle. As he was a lodger he had no suspicion that be would take anything away.—At this stage, Superintendent Wake asked for a remand for a week. which was granted. Adulteration of. Gin at Cardiff. At the Cardiff police-ccurt cn Monday— before Dr Paine and Mr Peter Price—Mrs Lewis, manageress of the Alma Hotel, Market-street, Cardiff, was summoned undor the Adulteration of Food and Drink Act. Inspector Hill gave evi- dcnco that on the 16th of February he called at the hotel and purchased half a pint of gin, for which be paid one shilling. He divided it into three parts, giving Mrs Lewis one por- tion, and telling her that he intended to send a portion for analysis by the borough analyst. The latter's report thereon had been received, declaring that the sample of gin was 73 per cent. water. The trin was 43Yz per cent. under proof, or 82 per cent. below standard strength.—Mr J. H. Jones (who appeared on behalf of the defendant) said that Mrs Lewis and her husband were only managing the hotel for the holder of the licence, and had occupied the house but three days. This was admitted in evidence, and Mr J ones submitted that under these circumstances it was not upon Wm. Lewis that a conviction should fall, but upon the person who had mixed the gin.— Dr Paine remarked that as the defen- dant had only been three days in the house, it was possible that she might not have known the gin was ever-adulterated, but at the same time an offence had been committed, and they would therefore inflict a small penalty cf half-a-crown and costs, or seven days. A Gabalva Publican Fined. A. Griffiths, landlord of the Cross Inn, was charged at Llandaff police-court on Monday —Colonel Woods and Mr Evan Lewis being on the Bench—with allowing intoxicating liquor to be consumed on his premises on Sunday, Feb. 21st.. Mr W. H. Pocket appeared for the defence. —P.C. Evan Jones said that he. in company with P.C. Lane, visited the Cross Inn, Gabalva, kept by the defendant, and in the tap room he saw a man with a pint vessel in front of him about half-full of beer. He asked the landlord the man's name and address, whereupon Griffiths re- plied, Edward J'dwards, 11, Llandaff- road." This was within the three- mile limit. There were other men in the house at the time, but he knew all of them were bona- fide travellers. Defendant, in reply to interroga- tories from the officer, said he was under the im- pression that defendant was a bona-fide traveller.—Abraham Griffiths, the landlord, was then called, and remarked that if he knew the defendant had not covered the three miles he would not have served him.—Mr Pocket asked their worships to take into consideration the defendant's good conduct of his house, not a single offence until that day having been pre- ferred against him.—The Bench ultimately fined defendant 20s and costs, but did not endorse the licence. A Violent Fellow at Treharris. At Merthyr police-court on Monday—before Mr North and Mr Smyth—Thomas Jones, a young fellow, was charged with being drunk and dis- orderly in John-street, Treharri-, on Saturday night, and with assaulting P.S. Evans. Prisoner was not only extremely violent before he arrived at the police-station, but alter he was taken there and released momentarily, he attacked the officer again, and broke a chair. He subsequently stated that he had had thirty or forty glasses of liquor. He had a bottle of" rum in his pocket. In answer to the Stipendiary, prisoner said he had had thirty or forty glasses of liquor, as stated.—The Magistrates' Clerk said the application of a stomach pump might have done him good. Prisoner, who said he had come from Gloucester, was fined 10s and costs, or in default 14 days' imprisonment for being drunk; and 20s and costs, or in default one month's im- prisonment, for the assault. Defrauding a Comrade. At Cardiff on Tuesday, Lewis Mackoures, (20(, was charged with obtaining a letter contain- ing a money order by false pretences, and also with forging the name of Albert Patten.— Albert Patten said he had come from London, accompanied by the prisoner, in order to obtain a berth on some ship. They lodged together in a house in Bute-street. Witness afterwards wanted to go back to London, and asked the prisoner to write to his (witness's) father to send him some money to take him back home. It was last Thursday he asked the prisoner to write this letter. On the 4th inst. he received an answer from his father saying he would send him some money when he got his wages. He showed the letter to the prisoner, and asked him to go to the post-office and apply for the letter containing the remittance. As the prisoner told him nothing about it, on the following Monday witness went himself to the post-office, and found the money had been paid to the prisoner.—Prisoner, in his defence, said that witness had owed him 16i odd for paying his passage from London, and that he had asked him to get the money at the post- office in liquidation of the debt. He further charged the prosecutor with handing him over to the police m order that he might escape paying his debt and get the money to go back hom" again. —Miss Mabel Evans. 8: clerk in the Post-office, said the prisoner told her the letter was from his father, and she paid him the 148 remitted.—John Burke, clerk in the post-office, Cardiff, said he remembered the prisoner calling for letters on March the 4th. He gave him one addressed to Alfred Patten, the prisoner having told him that he expected the letter from London.—Con- stable Waters said he arrested the prisoner in Bute-street. When charged at the station he said he had paid the prosecutor's railway fare from London, and wanted him to pay the money back.—He was committed to take his trial at the next assizes. Illicit Sale of Eeer. At Cardiff on Tuesday, Margaret Thmnp- son, living at 50, Springhill-place, was sum- moned for illicit beer-selling on Sunday, the 2Sth of February.—Evidence was given-that a constable watched the bouse from 1 a.m. till 2 a.m., and saw 13 persons enter and 10 leave, some being women who carried jugs. At two o'clock the police entered the house. When they knocked at the doorthey heard a lot of scrambling inside, and beard Margaret Thompson say, "Don't let them in." The police forced open the door and found. six persons in the middle room, three men and three women. They saw a woman run upstairs with two bottles in her hands, and going into the yard discovered that a cask of beer had been thrown over the wall. Mrs Thompson said she didn't know why the people came into her house, but, when asked by the police, one of the men said he had come to have a drop of beer; whilst the other said had come to see Mrs Thompson." On the table were two cups containing beer.—Mrs Thompson again denied the sale of the beer. She said the beer in the cups had been brought from the next door, and that they could travel the breweries of Car- diff, and would not find her name on their books. She had lost her homo and everything through that kind of thing before, and was not likely to let herself get into similar trouble again.—Police- constable Durstan, who proved the case, said that a watch was again kept, and they saw two more 4%-casks taken into the house, one at ten o'clock on Sunday morning, and one about 20 minutes past twelve. The prisoner denied this. She called a witness named Catherine Price, who said that as regards the two bottles of beer found in the bouse they bad been brought from the Butchers' Arms on Saturday night. This witness also denied that any 4% gallon casks of beer been earned into the house.—Inspector Hayward said the prisoner had been convicted before.— She was fined £10 and costs, or in default two months' imprisonment with hard labour. A Batch of Licensing Cases. At Swansea. on Tuesday—before Messrs W. Stone and J. G. Hall—Elizabeth Lewis, of the Ship Inn. Edward-street, was summoned for com. mitting a breach of the Sunday-closing Act on the 28th ult. Mr Richards prosecuted and Mr W. Smith defended.—The police proved 21 visits, and defendant was fined j35 inclusive.— Thos. K. Screech, of the Ship and Castle, Strand, was summoned for supplying drink to A drunken person on th3 27th ult.—Inspector Davies proved that a woman was sitting iti the house by the fire in a state cf intoxication, and on the landlord's attention being called to her con- dition he said he had not noticed it.—The offence was denied, but a fine of 40s, inclusive, was im. posed.—Sarah Davies, landlady of the Rutland Arms, Rutland-street, was summoned for break- ing the Sunday-closing Act on tho 28th of February.—Several visits were proved, and in detence it was urged the parties seen were lodgers.—The Bench believed this, and dismissed the case.—Annie Knapman, of the Ship Hotel, Wind-street, was summoned for a like offence. Here several visits were spoken to. and the Bench decided that there was a dcubt in the case, and gave defendant the benefit of it, dismissing the case.—VV ill jam Jones, of the Beauf >rt Arms, Forrysid^ fer a similar offence, was allaged to have had 16 Morriston men in his house. It was proved that ths visiters were bona fides, and entaren 10 the book that th* y were in tcwn on business. Thereupon the Bench dismissed the case. High Jinks at a Cardiff Hotel. On Wednesday at Cardiff police-court—before Mr Alderman D. Jones (in the chair), Mr Robert Bird, and Dr Paine—John Donovan, 29 years of age, who was shabbily dressed, and bore a black eye, was charged with having been disorderly and refusing to quit the Universal Hotel, Bute-street, also with having broken two panes of plate glass, value JS4, the property of Mr Richards, also having assaulted Police constable Lewis in Bute-street yesterday.—Wm. Thomas said he was working at the hotel, and was called to the kitchen, where defendant was committing ft nuisance. After having been put out twice, de- fendant returned and threw stones through the bar window. Witness ran cut. caught hold of him, and threw him down. Two panes, worth J34, were broken.—John Richards, proprietor of the hotel, said defendant came to the-bar about three o'clock and demanded drink. Witness refused him, as he had had too much already. Defendant then said he would smash the windows, and carried out his threat by throwing stones through two panes.—Police-constable Lewis said defendant became very violent when taken into custody, and kicked him.—Defendant asserted that the constable beat him.—Inspector Hayward said defendant had been four times pre- viously convicted.—A fine of 309 and costs, or a month's hard labour, was imposed, and defendant was also ordered to pay £4 towards the damage he did to the window. Harriett Chapman, 27 years of age, was charged at the same court with having wilfully damaged windows to the value of J36, in the same hotel, and also with having assaulted Police-constable Alfred Keatch. The magistrates passed sentence of two months' hard labour, and defendant, as she went below, expressed regret that she had not smashed every window in the place. —— HI.

MYSTERIOUS DEATH AT MORRISTON. A Post-mortem Ordered. On Friday evening, Mr Coroner Strick opened an inquiry into the circumstances attending the death of Mary Morris, whose body was found in a quarry the previous morning under circum- stances already reported. The husband of the deceased, who is a titter at the Upper Forest Works, and lives at 13, Trewyddfa-road, Morns- ton, said he had been on the Wednesday to Llanelly, and on reaching home at 11 p.m. found the key in ths front door. but no one in tbe house. He sat up till 11.40 and then went to bed. The next be heard of his wife was that her body had been found 10 the quarry. His wife had seemed strange for two or three days owing to the death of their child, and on viewing its body a few days ago she said, I should like to be there instead of it." There was nothing else to trouble het that he knew of, except her habit of drinking. Although she had threatened to do away with herself, he had never believed it. He did not think Ins wife's absence that night strange as she was in the II habit of going to Llanelly or Kidwelly without telling him.—Mrs Butler, a next door neighbour, said she saw deceased on the Wednesday even- ing, and she was very drunk. They parted ad their respective doors.—The mother-in law of deceased said deceased had some years ago spent a short time in the Carmarthen Asylum.—The Coroner suggested that there were several things which required clearing up, and he left it to th" jury to say whether a post-mortem examination was not necessary.—The jury asked that the room might be cleared, and on the public being again admitted announced a verdict of "Found dead." —The Coroner pointed out that there was nothing to show how deceased had died, or what happened to her between 11 p.m. and 5.30 A.m., and he thought it a case considerable light might b4¡ thrown on by a post-mortem. —The jury there. upon withdrew their verdict, and tbe post-mortem was ordered. The adjourned coroner's inquiry into the circum- stances attending the mysterious death of Mary Morris, whose body was found in a quarry last week, was held on Tuesday when, after hearing the evidence of Dr Bowen, on the result of a post-mortem examination, the jury found 4 verdict of accidental death.

MYSTERIOUS AFFAIR AT LLANDOVERY. An Infant Found in the River. An inquest was held at the King's Head Hotel on Friday by Mr R. Shipley Lewis, coroner, on the body of David Thomas, aged one month, found in the river Mynis, in the parish of Llanwrda, by Sergeant Williams, on the 2nd instant.—David Evans, master of the workhouse, stated that Margaret Thomas was confined in the house on the 8th J anuary last of a male child, and left the house with it on the 9th ult.-Mary Thomas stated that Margaret Thomas came to her house at Cwmdwr, Llanwrda, late in the evening, about three weeks ago, carrying tbe infant child, then in a wet state from the middle upwards, and remained until the next day. Witness cautioned ber against doing anythiug to the child, as it was reported she had been with it in the river. Sh< left witness's house about 1 o'clock, stating she was going- to Llandovery, the child being thet apparently 10 good health.—Sergeant Wilham: said that from rumours be heard he questioned Margaret Thomas as to tbe wh ereabouts of the ch i Id, She replied that it was at Brynamman with her uncle, Eiias Jones, a collier. He communicated with the Cwmamman police and received a reply that the child was not there, whereupon witness again saw the mother on the 2nd inst. She thee admitted throwing the child into the river Myni* the day after she left the Union, but stated that if died in her arms, and that its head turned black, and she did not know what to do with it. Sh. accompanied witness to the place where the bod) was found.—Dr Lewis said he bad examined th* body of a male child about a month old, and found all the organs in a healthy state sxcept the brain, which was slightly softened. He saw no marks of violence whatever, and was certain the child was not drowned.—Dr Lloyd corroborated. —A verdict of Found dead WAS returned.

DISTRESSING SUICIDE AT RHYMNEY. On returning from service on Sunday evening,* the wife and family of a mau named William Davies, residing at 12, Rcbertson-row, Rbymney, were shocked to find him dead, hanging by a rope fastened to the ceiling- in one of the front rooms of the house. Deceased, who was a quiet and much respected person in the locality, was 66 years of age, and had been suffering from a painful internal complaint for a, long period. Such was bis pain at times that he had \.)¿tlD heard to express a wish to die so as to be relieved, but no suspicion existed that he intended thus to hasten his death. Indeed, when the family left fot Penuel Chapel on Sunday evening, he was no worse than he had. for days, -and as usual refused their offer to remain at home with him. He had evidently been quite deliberate in fasten- ing the rope to tbe ceding, having coiled it round the hook a few times in order to render it as short as possible. Great sympathy is felt for the bereaved family.

THE LASH FOR WiFE-BEATERS. At Cardiff police-court, on Wednesday, Mar- garet Buckley summoned her husband, John Buckley, for assault. She said she got a separa- tion order in December, 1891, but her husband came home and turned her out. When the order' was granted he got a month for assaulting her. Although he earned about £2:t week he only paid her allowance three times. He husband alsa came and annoyed the children.—The Chairman, in passing sentence of three months' hard labour, said it was a great pity the magistrates had not power to order defendant the lash, for such brutea ought to have it.

NEARLY ROASTED TO DEATH iN THE RHONDDA. liarly on Wednesday morning, a man namedi William Griffiths was admitted to the Workhoqae at Pontypridd suffering from terrible injnriM from burns. It appears that Griffiths was dis- covered by P.C. Richards about midnight (¡8 Tuesday lying on the Gelii tips 10 Rhondda Val. ley in a semi-conscious condition. He was fright- fully burnt about the body, and, according to thw constable's statement, his shoulders were literally roasted like a piece of cooked veal." It is con. jectured that Griffiths wandered to the tip while under the influence of drink, and fell over Abe hot embers.

THE DISTURBANCES AT LEIPSIC. BERLIN, Monday. According to the latest reports received here from Leipsic, the disturbances which took place there on Saturday were not of a serious character. A crowd of only a few hundred men assembled, *°d this was easily dispersed by the police. The Wet, however, that Bimilar disorders recur from day to day in various parts of ths country inspires e anxiety, and the situation is engaging the Government's earnest attention.

LATEST DISCOVERER." BERLIN, Wednesday. According to despatches from Zanzibar, Dr Ifinsch, who is in Egypt endeavouring to organise ao expedition to reach Emin Pasha by way of the Nile is regarded in East Africa in a very unfavourable light. His assertion that he has deceived letters from Emin Pasha is discredited, as no letter has reached the coast from him addressed either to Dr Finsch or anyone else.

A SENSATIONAL STORY. SAN FBANCISCO, Wednesday. According to advices received here from Hono- lulu a family of 12 persons have been brought prisoners to that place from the Island of Sanu charged with murder. A story is told that Punlolo, a female member of the family, through her remarkable curing power, had secured the reputation of being a Kahuma, or one possessed of supernatural powers. Acting, it is leged, under the guidance of the spirit direct- ing her, she clubbed to death her sister for < questioning her powers, and next clubbed to death her nephew, aged six. Her brother, a man of -30, was then seized and held by the members of the family, while Punlolo burned his face and body with a flaming torch. The miscreants also seized another man, whom the women beat to death. As a result of these crimes the natives have deserted the place.

THREE NEGROES LYNCHED. NEW YORK, Wednesday. Twenty-seven negroes were arrested at Mem- phis, Tennessee, in connection with the recent murder of four deputy-marshals, who were shot by a party of negroes while attempting to arrest two OI" their race on the charge of assaulting Young white girls. It is now reported that late last night 75 masked men broke open the doors of the goal in which the 27 prisoners were lodged and seized five of the negroes, whom they hanged in a yard belonging to the Chesapeake and Ohio Railway, which is situated just behind the gaoL LATER. A telegram from Memphis states that only three of the negroes were lynched. These were the ringleaders in the attack on the deputy-Marshals. At daylight this morning their bodies were found a quarter of a mile from the gaol. They had all three been shot, and not hanged as at first ■sported. Nn YORK, Later. The mob gained admittance to the jail, which tt situated in the city, by pretending that they had brought a prisoner. On discovering their real purpose, the watchman, who had opened the gate, attempted to use a pistol, but was disarmed before he had time to fire. The keys of the cells were then procured, and the mob commenced to search 3he prison for the three ringleaders, whom they finally discovered and seized. The other pri- soners implicated in theaesauIts were not molested, hot tho negroes were all in a state of terrible alarm. After the captives had been bound, they Were partly dragged, partly pushed out of the Jail, and were then taken to an open field in the suburbs. Here a halt was made, and one cf the negroes seeing some of the mob preparing to use their rifles said, "If you are going to kiH us turn our faces to the west." Scarcely were the words uttered when a bullet crashed through his cheek. This shot was the signal for a regular volley, and the three men fell dead, literally riddled with bullets. The mob then dispersed. None of the lynchers are known. A report has reached Mem- phis that the negroes are assembling at a place called Urve, and are vowing vengeance. 150 whites, armed with Winchester rifles, have been vent to that place to keep the negroes in check. /It

At a Catholic convent in Fort Berthold, New Delaware, all the sisters, including the mother superior, are Indians, and the spiritual director is a priest of Mohawk descent. It now transpires that the Miss Balfour to whom Mr Alfred Lyttelton is engaged is only a very distant relation of the First Lord of the Treasury. Mrs Chipman, the largest woman in the world, died last month on an Indian reserve in Mani- toba. She tipped the scales at over forty stone, and she was married to an Indian who weighed less than seven stone. It is stated that the directors of the Great Western Railway are now considering a scheme for the compulsory retirement of all employees at the age of 60 upon a pension amounting to two- thirds of their highest remuneration. One rof the new members of the London County Council is a working cooper, Mr Wm. Crooks, and sufficient funds have been raised to enable him to give his whole time to the work of the Council. The Sarvian standing army will, it is expected, shortly be supplied with small-calibro repeating rifles, the Servian Minister of War, Colonel Praporcetovic, having recently made urgent re- presentations to the Government to this effect. Mr Foster, secretary of the United States Treasury, whose arrival in England has been announced, is better known in his own country as the" Total Abstinence" Governor of Ohio than as the Financial Secretary of tbe Republic. The enormous steel girders intended to sustain the roof of the Manufactures Building, at the Chicago World's Fair, are about to be erected, These girders, which are the largest ever made for architectural purposes, span 363 feet and rise: to a height of 211 feet. The contract for them amounts to about £92,000. A first edition of Smollett's Peregrine Pickle,' uncut, was sold at Sotheby's for £31108; the "BIack-Booke of St. David's," with signature of Henry VIIL. £28 10s; Boydell's Shakespeare's Gallery," £19; Carey's "Life in Paris," large paper, £ 16 5s; and Ireland's "Life of Napoleon Buonaparte," £ 11. The Queen of Greece, although she has brought up a family of seven children, has pre- served all tho grace of early youth. Her charming smile softens her Slavonic beauty, which she inherits from her father, the Grand Duka* Constantine, who was one of the handsomest men at tho Russian Court. Nothing could surpass the charm of her manners. Senator Stein was so painfully impressed by the horrible spectacle of the recent execution of Macllvame by electricity that he intends to introduce a Bill at Washington for the imme- diate substitution of ths gallows in place of the method of legal murder favoured by the country- men of Edison at the end of this nineteenth century. The Ven. Archdeacon Howell has issued a Lenten pastoral to his parishionets at Gresford, in which he points out that the consequences of attempting too much is that before Lent is over many relinquish all their efforts in utter weari- ness, disappointment, and disgust. Above all, it should be borne in mind that Lenten observances were only a means to an end. Robin Hood and Maid Marian will be produced by Mr Daly at his theatre in New York on March 17, and simultaneously rehearsed by Mr Irving at the Lyceum for the sake of copyright. Sir Arthur Sullivan has written both incidental music and the music for the songs m Lard Tennyson's play, and the woodland scenes are taken from Mr Whymper's pictures of Sherwood. The recently-published bahnce-sheefc of the Salem Newydd Welsh Baptist Church, Ferndale, shows a splendid record of good work accom- plished during the past year. The collections towards various objects amount in the aggregate to the handsome total of £1,009 17851f2d. This speaks wall for the efficacy of the voluntary system. The church, which numbers 300 members, and its respected pastor, the Rev Isaac Jones, are to be congratulated upon their industry. Professor E. A. Froyman's next contribution to historical literature will be the third volume of his "History of Sicily." It will be remembered that the first volume of the work dealt with "The Native Nations: the Phoenician and Greek Settlementsthe second covered the ground From the beginning of Greek Settlement to the Commencement of Athenian Intervention." The forthcoming third volume will deal with Tho Athenian and Carthaginian Invasions." Th« main World's Fair buildings, exclusive of what will be necessary for their roofs and for their interior finishing, <? glass and about 250 tons of paint. An expendi- ture of almost £100,000 is necessary for these items. In tho electricity building there will be 40,000 panes of glass, or more than in any other Exposition structure. This building will be especially conspicuous at night as, owing to its extensive glass surface, the brilliancy of its electrical exhibit will be strikingly visible from the outside. The Bristol Chamber of Commerce has under- taken to furnish an exhibit for the World's Fair that will doubtless attract a great deal of attention. In addition to a representation of the manufactures of the place, the exhibit will show much in illustration of tbe lives aad discoveries of John and Sebastian Cabot, upon whose early American explorations is based England's claim to its past and present possessions in this country. The Merchant Venturer's Guild has agreed to contribute Cabot relics, of which it has a large collection. Mrs Margaret Sullivan is said to be the most brilliant woman on the American press to-day. She is now the principal editorial writer cf the Chicago Herald, commanding a salary larger than that earned by any other woman in journalism, east or west. Mrs Sullivan has written constantly since she was eighteen. Perhaps her most bril- liant piece of work were her letters from the Paris Exposition, to the opening of which she was sent as the representative of the Associated Press. Toynbee Hall has just suffered a serious loss by the withdrawal of one of its oldest and most in- fluential "residents," Mr Bolton King. Mr King (says the Toynbee Record) was in the true sense one of the founders of the place be was active in Oxford in getting together men and money, and eight years ago he began himself to live in Whitechapel. Mr King has gone to take up his duties as a landlord in Warwickshire, but he still continues to be secretary of the loynbee Travellers. Mr John Edwardes Vaughan, of Rheola, in the Vale of Neath, who is a candidate for the Re- solven division of the Glamorgan County Council, was educated at Harrow and at Oxford, where, it is interesting to note, he was a fellow collcgian of the popular member for Merionethshire, Mr T. E. Ellis, M.P. Mr Vaughan has served with the 21st Royal Scots Fusiliers in Burmah, and in India, and his career in this connection has been one of distinction; he was awarded the medal with two clasps, and specially mentioned in the military despatches. An idea cf how trade is fostered at Newport is going the rounds of the clubs and dinner tables at the Uskside borough. The Alexandra Dock Company were applied to Lr a lease of a piece of land near the docks on which to erect warehouses for the storage of feeding stuffs, one warehouse already 10 existence being crammed. The appli- cants were asked how much trade they were likely to bring, and because they could not pledge the exact tons, hundredweights, and quarters, and therefore the exact amount of dues the Dock Company were likely to get, they were told the land was too valuable, and that they could not have it. And yet Newport people mourn the fact that trade goes elsewhere! The Hon. Alfred Lyttelton, whose engage- ment to. Miss Edith Balfour is announced, is a very successful barrister, whose professional career may end in very high dignity. He is mora widely known to the cricket-lovinsr English by his reputation as th« best amateur wicket- keeper of the day, and by bis great skill at the equally fashionable game of tennis. He is very popular both in society and at tho Bar, is the brother of Viscount Cobham, and the nephew of Mr Gladstone. His first wife, Miss Tennant, after only a year of married life. Since the year 1862, when the Llandaff School for Deaf and Dumb Children was founded by the ]ate Alexander Melville, 117 deaf, and deaf and dumb, young people have been received into it for education, 31 are now resident, and others are expected. Of the last seven who have left all are doing well. Two are at Maple's as French polishers, one has gone to a wall-paper manufac- turer's, one is a weaver, one a carpenter, one a shoemaker, and on6 works alternately at coal mining and tin-plate work. Several also have departed this life in sure and certain hope of a blessed resurrection," which they would not have had but for th* teaching received here. This noble institution is in want of funds. According to Mr W. J. Wilson, agent to Sir Arthur Stepney, M.P., the Small Holdings Bill of Mr Chaplin, if placed on the Statute Book of the realm, would not apply to the Stepney Estate, inasmuch "as it was already in operation there in a very much better form than any Act of Parlia- ment could put It." for out of 163 farms there were no less than 113 under 50 acres, and when- ever a farmer had a desire to get a lease he re- ceived it. As to allotments in town again, the agent (who explained these matters in reply to a question of Mr Gwilym Evans, his opponent for County Council honours) said that of plots from an eighth of an acre to an acre there were 500 on the estate. The Garibaldian General Bordone died in Paris on Tuesday. He was born in 1821 at Avignon, where his father, a Sardinian and an old soldier of the Empire, had settled. He was an army surgeon in the Crimean War. He was tho invontor of a new gun carriage, and while visiting Italy to recommend his invention he made acquaintancs with Garibaldi. He took an active part in the liberation of the Two Sicilies, and thrn returned tn Franco. In 1870 he persuaded Garibaldi to offer his sword to the staff, and was head of his staff. In May, 1871, the Thiers Government imprisoned him for three weeks on his return from a visit to Ganbatdi. He had since lived in retirement. Mr John La Farge and Mr Henry Adams, who have recently returned to New York from a tour in the South Pacific, spent some five months in the Samoan Islands. Lady Lytton, left by her will to a Miss Louisa Devey. When the "Biography of Edward Lord Lytton" appeared some eight years ago, Miss Devey published the" Letters of Lcrd Lytton to his Wife," with extracts from Lady Lytton's Autobiography and other docu- ments, "in vindication of her ladyship's memory." The book was undoubtedly a stab by 'Lady Lyiton from the grave at the reputation of her brilliant but erratic husband. Many of the letters in it referred to their separation and the eause. But tho work had not been published many days before the late Earl applied for an injunction, which he obtained, and the book was suppressed. SHOCKING TRAOEPY AT BRADFORD. A Mother's Mad Crime. On Saturday morning Ann 1tnright aged 38, the wife of Thomas Enright, a labourer, living in Cambridge-street, Blackburn, murdered her son William, aged seven, by cutting his throat, afterwards putting an end to her ownliftl by sirrilar means. The woman hack been in very low spirits in consequence of bad health. On Friday night she was very restless, and several times left her bed. The husband went to work before six o'clock on Saturday morning, leaving his wife and four children in bed. The wife rose later and prepared the children's breakfast. After breakfast she went upstairs and called down to one of tho boys to bring her a razor in order that she might cut her corns. The eldest boy, Thomas, aged 11, got the razor from a box in the back kitchen and sent it upstairs by his next brother, George. Presently Thomas heard his little brother Wilham, who had been left in bed, screaming, and running upstairs found the poor child with his throat cut and bloodspurtingfrom theopen wound Thechild,who was standing when his brother entered the room, fell forward on his face, and Thomas, on looking round the room, saw his mother sitting on the bed also bleeding from a wound in the throat. Medical assistance was called, but when the doctors arrived they found that the woman and boy were dead. William Greenwood, a neigh- bour, states that when he entered the house the woman was still alive, and was holding a razor in her hand, and he heard her exclaim, Where's my Willie?"
