------------"CERTAINLY NOT."
"CERTAINLY NOT." Lord Londonderry and Mr Ritchie. Mr Ritchie, in a recent letter commautiDg on a portion of Lord Londonderry's speech at Wyn- yard Park, used the following word. The in- ference may be drawn that the seceding; Miniatnrn objected to a prolonged, carefal, and searchinc investigation or inanity into the fiscal question, and that this objection led to their retirement from the Cabinet." Lord Londonderry, reply- ing to a correspondent, who asked him whether he wished such an inference to be drawn from the speech in qaestion, wrote—" Certainly not. -(Signed) Londonderry." Mr Chamberlain and Bread Prices. A correspondent recently called the attention of Mr Chamberlain to the fact that in all parts of the country an increase was being made in the price of bread, and'pointing ont that the oppo- nents of fiscal reform had been actively engaged in various constituencies representing that this was in a large measure doe to the proposed tariff reforms of the right hon. gentleman. The cor- respondent suggested that unless a clear and definite denial was given to the dear food cry of the Liberal party, he was afraid that the Jesuit of the next General Election would go against the Unionist party. Mr Wilson, Mr Chamberlain's private secre- tary, replying on the 4th inst., said I am directed by Mr Chamberlain to acknowledge the receipt of your l6tter of the 1st inst., and to refer you to his speech delivered at Welbeck. It is really unnecessary to make a formal answer to the misstatements to which you call attention. What is shown by the advance in the price of bread is that these advances are independent of taxation, and that the cost of bread depends whoUy upon supply and demand. If we contirMie to leave ourselves in the hands of a monopoly, we must expect these rised in price. The remedy is to open TIP new sources of supply by preferential arrangements with our Colonios."
BARRY COUNTV SCHOOL.
BARRY COUNTV SCHOOL. Amendments in Local Scheme. At a meeting of the governors of Barry County School held on Tuesday evening the Chairman (Mr J ohn Lowdon) pointed out that an oppor- tunity had arisen for the amendment of their local scheme. The most important objection raised was to the division of the surplus of the general fund for secondary education by the County Council. Previously it was divided according to population, and owing to this fact Barry had lost considerably. He (Mr Lowdon) thought they should ask for the mouev on the basis of average attendance. Mr J. A. Hughes pointed out that at Porth, for instance, there was a credit balance at the bank of £1,700, while at Barry they always had an overdraft —The Chairman: We are penalised because of the success of our I elementary schools.-A draft summary of objec- tions prepared by the chairman was accepted, and this stated that the total income per head received by Penarth was JE21, whilst Barry re- ceived least in the county, viz.. Yll per head, To reduce tbo number in school would be a hard- ship npqn the artisan classes.
