KIDNEY POISONS. 1 j 1 I t e i } Nine people out of ten have some form of kidney trouble, and do not know it. It is the most fatal of all diseases (except consumption), and the least understood, because it comes on so quietly. Its first warnings are so light, they are thought of no account, or are blamed to some other cause. A slight backache or rheumatic pains, dizziness, sleeplessness, a tendency to worry, or irritability, are put down to overwork Dr some other cause than the kidneys. But these symptoms, and many more, are signs of defec- tive kidney action, and are caused by the impurities in the blood which the kidneys should have filtered out. These kidney impurities are poisons, and cause more different forms of disease than any other kind of poison in the i world. They affect every nerve, every muscle, every tissue of the body, until all are saturated with them. They cause Bright's disease, diabetes, chills, headache, sleeplessness, swelling of the ankles, excessive quantity of irine, gravel, dropsy, pains in the back, sides, and hips, lediments, rheumatism, neuralgia, nervousness, giddiness, rregular heart, and many more. In fact, these kidney poisons ire the cause of most disease. Treat the kidneys at the first sign of anything wrong, and lelp them to filter these impurities out of the system. In no other way can you be well. The great Quaker kidney medicine, 111 DOAN'S BACKACHE KIDNEY PILLS have just the healing, soothing effect the kidneys require. They do not act on the bowels at all. but their whole strength is on the kidneys themselves. In any and all forms of kid- ney trouble this medicine has a beneficial and quick action, and by its aid the system is quickly relieved of all the poisons which cause disease, and which healthy kidneys filter out. ANOTHER, CARDIFF CASE. Mr. John Williams, of 216, Carlisle-street, Splotlands, Cardiff, says :Dear Sira,-About three years ago I was home with a severe attack of influenza, caused through my kidneys being out of order, which left me with a very weak back. On several occasions I have been=home for a montn with my back in a fearful state. I could neither lie in bed or walk about. I have spent pounds on different medicines, but all to no use. and I began to despair of ever getting veil. About two months ago I had one of the usual attacks, when my wife said, 'Why don't you try Doan's Backache Kidney Pills?' So I sent for a box, and took some at once. when I soon began to feel better. Then a friend of mine got me another box from Anthony's, in St. Mary-street, and, thanks to these pills, I feel quite another man. My appetite, which was very poor, is as good as ever now. and I feel that I can never lufficiently praise Doan's Backache Kidney Pills for what they have done for me. I shall be very pleased for you to use this testimonial just as you like. (Signed) John Williams." A FREESAMPLE Mention this paper and send Id. stamp to Foster-McClellan Co., 8, Wells-street, Oxford-street, Lon- don, W., and a free sample will be sent at once In buying Doan's Backache Kidney PiUs it is best to buy them of a good chemist or a good druggist, that is, buy from the dealer who will sell you the genuine, and not try to pass off on you an inferior imitation. MARKETS. r M OORN. Cardiff. Saturday (from the Cardiff Grain Oompany, Limited).-At our market to-day the tone was very firm. Wheat, both home-grown Mid foreign, was fully 6d per quarter dearer. Whole- sale prices :-Wheat--white, per 621b, 3s 5d to Ss 7d; red. 3s 4d to 3s 6d; barley, per 561b, 36 to 4*; oats, per 401b, 2s 3d to 3s; beans, per *5 1-sHb, 3s lid to 4s"Id; maize, }>er 601b, 3s to JB 3d; vetches-winter, 5s to 6s; spring, 4s to ¥■ Newport. Boath (Cardiff), Tuesday.—There was a large rapply of cattle on oiler at this market to-day, the demand for which, however, was very Blow. Last week-end quotations were fully upheld, viz.:—Best oxen and heifers made from 54s to 56s per cwt, a few extra choice reaching 58s; second quality ditto met a very slow trade at about 52s per cwt. for the ^rimest, and other qualities from 48s to 50s. Fat cows were aoout the .average suppty, those on offer meeting a quiet market at from 50s to 52s per cwt. for the primest, and jrther sorts about 46s to 48s. Sheep were a short supply, but sufficient were penned to meet the require- ments of the trade; beet wethers were quoted at from 7id to nd per lb.. and seconds 6id to 7d; Irish yearlings realised from 7d to 7id; ewes were scarce, those penned being pur- chaseable at from 5 d to 5id per lb., a few extra choice touching 6d. Lambs also were a •hort supply, and practically no alterations in value, viz., from 7 £ d to 7Jd per lb. The quotations for pigs given last week-end can be repeated; the supplies however, were, if anything. a trifle larger, choice small porkers realising from lis 3d to 116 6d per score, heavy- weight ditto 10s lOd to lis, mixed weights los 9d to lis 6d per score, the exact figure being determined by the number of large pigs taken in a lot. Bacon pigs were a good supply, some very choice small pigs making 103 per score, and heavy-weight ditto 99 3d to 9s 6d. Sows: Only a few on offer, these making from 7s 3d to 7a 9d per score, but in one or two instances 811 Was made. The attendance was a bit below the average, and, as a consequence, the amount of business done fell considerably below last week's market. At the close a large quantity of stock was left unsold. Trade in the carcase market was again of a dis- appointing character, and there was the usual display of really chcice meat one has become <M)cuatomed to see in this go-ahead depart- ment. Here also there is very little to quote different from last week-end, viz.:—Sides of prime ox or heifer beef made from 5id to 5ad per lb., a few extra choice reaching 53d; best hind-quarters of beef met a fairly good demand at from 61d to 6gd, and second quality ditto 6d to 6id; forecuartera of beef met a Blow trade at from 4Jd to 4|d fnr the beet, and other sorts 3Jd to 4d per lb; carcases of choice wether mutton were purchaseable at from 6d to 6Jd per lb, and other sorts from 5d to 5Jd. There was a small but very choice lot of lamb on offer, the best being quoted at about 7d per lb. by the carcase, and seconds from 6id to 6id. There was no veal or pork on offer. The attendance appeared quite up to the ave- rage, still business was painfully slow for a Tuesday's market, and at the close a clearance had not being effected. Cowbridgc, Tuesday.—The market to-day unusually small. Very little demand for any kind of stock. Beef in buyers' favour. Beef —prime. 6d per lb; inferior ditto, 5d to' 5Jd. Cowe and calves selling from £ 15 to £ 19. Sheep: The supply equal to the demand, mutton selling from 6d to 74d per lb; store Sheep: The supply equal to the demand, mutton selling from 6d to 74d per lb; store sheep from 30s to 35s. Pigs a good ournly and cheap at from 15s to 30e; porkers, 10s 6d to 118 the score. Bne n pigs. 98 6,1 to 1IK Whitland, Tuesday.—The monthly market wa,s held to-dav. There was a good attendance and autiplv of cattle, eheep, and pigs. which sold at late market prices. Owing to the- wintry weather that has eet in. with the limited command of winter food at the disposal of the majority of the farmers in the district, store cattle of all kinds were very little in demand. tJsk, Monday.—The market to-day was con- sidered rather a good one for a bi-monthly. There was a fair supply of cattle and sheep, but trade was far from brisk. The following were the prices:—Best quality beef, 6d to 6U per lb.; seconds, 5Jd to 6d; wether mutton, 7ld to nd; ewe, 6d to 6Jd; cows and calves, iC12 to £15; ycaring cattle, E6 to JE8; two-year- olds. We also flad a short »npr>ly of fat mutton. Nice weishts of wethers made satisfactory prices of 7|d to 8d per lb. Very Httle trade in fat lambs, obout 7icl per lb. Few fat calvej, with a declining trade. Nice quality porks about 6d per lb. Bacons dear, making 6d to v'd. Store cattle no better. Store lambs a good supply, but rather slack demand. Vr. Pye disposed of a consignment of 100 lambs rang-, insr from 29s to 36s each.. Newport, Wednesday.—With a large supply of medium quality stock there was a fair trade. TRADE REPORTS. CARDIFF. EXCHANGE, Monday. During the past week the unsettled weather chcoked the inliow of engaged tonnage, and the total shipments, aA a consequence, were much lower than they otherwise would have been. In other respects the coal trade has displayed a more hea.thy tone. and the outlook is distinctly brighter. Inquiries for large steam coal for prompt and early shipment are siendiiy liicreaoiiii, ana llle atuiiiua lor cuy large has been exceptionally strong. There has been an average inquiry for small steam coal, but the output having exceeded normal proportions prices have reccded. but not materially, and an indication of future pros- pects in this branch of the coal trade may be gathered from the fact that large contracts for good emails to be delivered over next year have been concluded at prices ranging between 7s 6d and 8s 6d per ton. The house coal trade continues buoyant, and prices have an upward tendency. In the patent fuel trade orders are accumulating, and the demand for coke con- tinues active. Current quotations:—Best steam coal 16iJ 6d to 16s 9d. seconds 15s 6d to 16s, drys 15a 9d to 16s 6d; best Monmouthflbires 15s to 15a 3d, seconds 13a 6d to 14s; best steam smalls 9e 9d to 10s. seconds 9s 3d to 9s 6d; and inferior sorts from 8s to 8.s 6d; best house coal 15s 6d to 1bS 6d, seconds 14a to 15s; No. 3 Kbondda large 15s 9d to 16e. brush 13s to 13s 6d, and small 106 6d to lis; No. 2 Rhondda large 13s 9d to 14s, through and through 10s 6d to lis 3d, and small 8s 6d to 9s; patent fuel 14s 6d to 15s, according to brand; foundry coke 20s to 23s, and furnace coke 178 6d to 18s 6d per ton f.o.b.; pitwood 18s 6d per ton. ex ship; iron ore-Rubio 14s 6d to 14s 9d. Tafna 15s 3d to 15s 6d, and Almeria 14s 9d per ton c.i.f. Car- diff or Newport. The outward freight market, if anything, has displayed, a weaker tone. Tonnage intended for the Mediterranean has consequently had to submit to lower ratas. 5s 3d to be 6d now being the highest obtainable for Genoa and 58 3d for Port Said, while Mar- seilles has dropped to 6Sf. and Barcelona is down at 6s 4id to 6s 9d. For the Plate or the East Indies there is a limited inquiry at last rates, and for Rio de Janeiro several large carriers have been secured at 11s to lie 6d. NEWPORT Coal shipments from the UskQide port for the week en-line Saturday night totalled 69,463 tons. Of this quantity 56,315 were des- patched to foreign ports, and 13,158 tons went coastwise. The steam coal trade has displayed a better tone. Prompt large has been in good demand for completing cargoes of steamers in port., and the supply has fallen short of the requirement. Heavy demurrage in some instances have been incurred. Buyers who have been holding back orders until the action of the employers with respect to the "stop-day question" was definitely kno-n are now on the market negotiating shipments for distant dates and at the moment the. out- look presages a brisk demand over the year. The small coal trade is active, but prices have receded about Is per ton. The cold weather has increased the demand for house coal, and more forward booking is now taking place. Patent fuel and coke stems are fair!y fuT!. with a steady market, but the pitwood trade is easy. stocks on the week having received considerable augmentation. The following are the closing prices :—BMt Monmouthshire large 158 to 15s 3d seconds 14s to 14s 3d, smalls 9s to 93 6d. seconds 8s to 8s 6d, tiouse coal 163 to 17s, seconds 14s to 15s 6d; patent fuel. 14s 6d to 15s 6d. according to brand; coke 15s to 20s, according to quality; pitwood, 18s 6d ex ship; iron ore—Rubio 14s to 148 6d, Tafna 15s to 15s 6d. SWANSEA. The trade of the port, on the whole, was quiet during the week, and. compared with the previous week, there was some decrease. Only a limited amount of tonnage and coal came to hand, and the shipments of coal and patent fuel were much below the average. As there was a plentiful øupply, of coal during the past week. no break occurred at any of the works in this district. Employ- ment both in the steel and tin-plate trades continues to exhibit a healthy tone. and the prospect of regular work for the whole of the winter months is most encouraging. Owing to a couple of the smelting furnaces being out for repairs, the aggregate output of steel ingots for the week was correspondingly left than dnring the first week of the montb, I i At the Dyffryn Works two additional bailing

furnaces have been set working, thus enabling the bar mill to double its daily output of bars and also secure to all the hands engaged at the rolls a substantial increase in wages. The finishing departments are far busier now than at any period of the year, if not since 1889. At the majority of the works shifts of eight hours have been introduced. The stocks that had accumulated between the mills and the intermediate departments at the Foxhole (from henceforth known as the Aber Tin-plate Company, Limited) are being rapidly cleared off. Fill1 activity is ob^ervnb'e at all the spelter refineries, copper works, blast furnaees. and coke ovens. Overtime is ahncst nisrhtly resorted to at Messrs. Kirby and Rees's engi- neering sheds at Morriston. The Gloucester Company's slied^ have also a plentiful supply of orders on hand. A full week's work was done at the whole of the collieries. The bottom vein at the Old Birch Grove Pit is again bein? utilised. So far the "stop-day" policy has not in any ray affected the price of coal locally. Best house coal at the pit's mouth is still quoted at 20c; per ton. Stocks have, it is true, decreased somewhat; still, if things continue as at present the employers of our local industries can look with equani- mity at the comin<r severe weather, and the men congratulate themselves on the prospect of regular employment. DOWLAIS. There was no outstanding feature in the events of the past week, but generally things were very unsettled in the iron and steel works, and mere than one branch was in. active oving to the prevailing trade weakness. Both the big mill and the tin bar mill in the Old Works suffered from this cause, bat the prospect for the current week is more hope- ful. and orders to light up" on Sunday night were ported. Practically the whole of the new Bessemer department was stopped in consequence of the serious breakage of ten days ago. A big staff of men is engaged in repairing the bed and 'frame of the "C" coggin? engine, and the work is well forward although the completion of the task is not likely to be ticcomplished for another fort- night. One effect of the accident is to srreatly interfere "ith the due delivery of steel rails from the Goat Mill. The old Bessemer was working, and thereby operations on the left side were kept active. The sleeper mill was runnins with moderate results, the supplies being brought down from the "A" c^g^ing mill. In the Tvor Works the fullest activity belonged to the plate mill, which was briskly employed throughout the week. Nothing was doing however at the Little Mill, and idleness reigned during the whole period, consequent upon a temporary shortness of orders. It is anticipated that the No. 19 blast furnace will be re-flred very shortly. The interior has been re-lined throughout and otherwise pre- pared for a resumption, and to that end it is stated that the power of the No. 8 blast engine will be increased. The reputed intention of the company to lay down ne.v machinery in the Ivor Works is widely debated, and more particularly with regard to the erection of a steel tube making plant. The promised inter- view with Mr. Edward P. Martin, the manag- ing director, by the deputation of the work- men on the question of the termination of contracts is being eagerly anticipated, having regard to its importance. The best returns vere achieved at the collieries, and with a. full week to record without interrup- tions the output exceeded the average. Great satisfaction is expressed at the settlement on Saturday of the Bedlinog No. 1 Pit strike, after five ninths' stoppages
