The Anniversary treating of the Worcester Church Missionary Associttionj was held 'at the .Guildhall, on Thursday, the 4th inst, The As- -istari! Secretary of the Purentlnsiinition detailed the opt-rati(>ns of the Society. aod was fbllovved by several oth^r clergymen, who, with mhch elo- quence-, pleaded the cause of missions. It appeared from the Report that 200 missionaries ami teachers are employed by the Society in different parts of the world; that not less than ten thousand heathen children are instructed under its auspices, and that the happiest effects are the result of these exer- tbos;, At one church on the Western coast of Africa, there are 300 communicants. The follow- ing is (he disinterested testimony of Sir George Collier to tite success of the Society's lahouts in Western Africa:- It is hardly possible to conceive the difficulties which have be^n surmounted in .bringing the colony of Sierra Leone to its present improved and still very improving state. Roads are Co1 in every direction, useful tor coin iiiunica'i-.n, many towns aud villages are kuilt, and others, ds the black population ingreases, are building more im- provement, under Itl) circumstances of climate and infancy of colony, is scarcely to be supposed. I visited all the black towns and villages, attended the public scliools and other establishments, and I never witnessed, in any popu- lation, more contentment and happiness. The manner in which the public schools are here conducted reflects the greatest credit 011 those concerned ill their prosperity, and the improvement made by the scholars proves the aptitude of the African;-it .moderate pains be taken to instruct him. I have attended places of pubtic worship in every quarter of the globe, and I do most conscientiously declare, never did I witness the cert-monies of religion more piously per- formed, or nure devoutly attended, to, than at Sierra *Leone." At the Great Sessions for Glamorganshire, Chs. Edwards, labourer, for stealing ten sheep, the pro perty of L^wis Willi.im and Jenkin Bowen, of JLIatigab lach, received sentence of, death; the Judge, however, held out hopes of mercy to the tuifortunate man. Hannah Dainty, for stealing two pieces of muslin from the shop of Mr. John Voss, of Swansea, was sentenced to ten months' imprisonment; John Obrum, alias Abraham, ship- wright, and Thomas Rogers, cooper, were found guilty of stealing an umbrella-and various other art icles from the dweiliijg-liouse of -John Williams,; of Ystradowen as was John Thomas; gamekeeper, ¡ with uttering tiase coin. Against Wa).Thon)a's, labourer, charged with manslaughter, no evidence; was adduced, aud he "was accordingly acquitted i and John David, of Pantscaw.en, fanner, charged with stabhitig and maiming his wife, was proved to lie insane at the time he committed the act. ¡ On Monday se'bnighf, Thomas Price and John Evans were executed, pursuant to their sentence, iti the yard in front of the gaol, at Cardigan, for the murder of Tho'iias Evans. The gallows being very narrow, it was deemed impracticable to execute both at the same limp, Price was in consequence brought put first; lie appeared perfectly resigned to his fate, and walked with a firm and steady step; lie ascended the ladder with seeming alacrity, and appeared anxious for the moment to arrive which would put a period to his suffering* in this world, scarcely allowing the executioner stiflicient time to fasten the rope, before he stepped from the ladder: thus launching himself into eternity Alter hang- ing the usual time; he was cut down, and h # hedy carried back into the gaol.—Alter some mi- nutes had elapsed, Evans was conthictcd out: he was less firm than Price, and appeared in an agony of despair, and with a trembling step ascended the latalladder: his groans, until he was turned off, were truly distressing, He was a fine young man, and had just attained his 18th year, with a very prepossessing countenance. Price was a strong, athletic young man, about six feet high, and thirty yn.i.rsofagp. ThfymadeafnUconfessionotthe murder, and acknowledged the justice of their ptini shment. At the Montgomeryshire ftreat Sessions, It. A great number of colliers and ironstone getters are said to be travelling in the vicinity of Wolver- hampton, begging at the houses ol the gentry, farmers, and others, and in some instances de- manding relief, under pretence of their not being able to obtain employment; and it is with regret we understand, that many of them have left their houses,, gone to considerable distances in the adjoining counties, and are living in idleness upon the money which they collect, whilst their families have, in uiany instances, become chargeable t6 .the parish. We understand that there is full employ- ment offered to them by their masters at a trifling reduction of wa<»es,, which is imperiously called for I by the depressed state of the ii\)ntra(ie, and which will leave them quite as well off, considering the low price of pruvjbions, as they ever were.—Stephen Turner, and eight other colliers, from Oldlmry, were committed on the 6ih inst. ty our 'County-house of Correction, for two months, for unlawfully-leaving their work^' unfinished,—Chronicle. { Sc i t, lonJemned foe- hoT-s.«ri?estiRg" at Vh«'ia5t Pool Great Session, has been reprieved^ are. informed, through the merciful intercession of Lady Clive. On Saturday se'nnight, Wm. Griffiths, for a bur- glary at Cotton, and Thomas Farmer. for stabbing Thos. Williams, at Church Stteiton, were executed, j pursuant to their sentence, in front of the county gaol, Shrewsbury. Tne behaviour of these un-, happy men was such as became their situation, and they met their fate with fortitude; Farmer died instantly, but the sufferings of Griffiths were very visibly "protracted for some time after the dfop fell. Ou examin- ing the body, it was discovered that his death Was occasioned by a dreadful blow on th; hack of the head from some heavy weapon, by which the skuii ••vitas sliocking,ly fractured. It was also ascertained that he had been robbed of several .bank-notes, his watch, chain, and teats, and a icaiher shot-pouch. A jury assembled on the day foiiowing his/death, under the difectson of Mr, Iliuchhtef, Coroner, tor the couiity of Salop, and the investigation was re- sumed on Wednesday and Saturday last, from which latter day it was again .adjourned until Sa- turday iiex t, The depositions or Mr. Downing, and of Fox and his son, were received by the Co- roner; and the elder Fox is detained on suspicion of being implicated in this dreadful act. The show of cattle at Hereford Easter fair on Wedpestiay, was remarkably fine, both as to the number and quality of the animals, but the prices were ruinously low, although the, buyers were more numerous than usual at this fair iu former years. -Disttttis IN, South of, ireland is now in the most deplorable state,1 owing to the system of outrage, which has checked all industrious exertion, and to the occurrence of a calamitousalld unproductive season. The following description of the state of the poor in the county of Clare, is irom a most respectable sotirce "The extent of the failure of otir crops, most particularly the potatoe crop, has exceeded attca)- dilation. Potatoes, oats, barley, hay, have rotted in such quantities, particularly iti the western part of the county (Clare), that, animmeme proportion cf the peasantry are even already reduced to the extremity of want. The cattle are (lying by hun- dreds. There is one cry ofdis.tress from one end of the country to the other. The cyu will be, and in, felt in other western counties as well as ours, though not to the same extent-Limerick, Kerry, Cork, Oalway, and Mayo; but we are, I believe, by far the greatest sufferers. Faiiiiiit,, and its (er- tain consequences, pestiletkce and plunder, will be inevitable, unless some measures are taken to pre vent that utter extremity of misery and starvation that must take pi ice in the spring. They have hot food they will not have seed; the laud will be uncultivated credit is annihilated by the opera- tion of the Insolvent Act. Nothing but fflod will restrain then from acts of violence and despera- tlon-Mhis is the harrier, as I have -before stated to you, and its political importance—and the neces- sity of preserving it in tranquillity at such a crisis as this, toprevent the contagion from spreading northward, is evident at a glance. What will it cost government for the employment' of a mili- tary force in some time- if .they, allJW the people to sufter the extremity qi hunger A a to anyer- ,eii lcti- fectual relief from the gentry, ihe-idea is ridicu- loi>s; the evi) is of top great -to he met effectually by any such means. The gentry them- selves are distresse(i beyond measure: there are Do rents paying in the country. A Brighton paper says,—k> 1 he- King. after an almost constant sojourn at the pilviiiun of ihe months, during which time his Majesty's' Jiealih has been unbroken, and his .pints, the result of health, every way cheerful, will cer- tainly leave us for a season in a few days his departure will indeed be a subject o! general but unavailing regret." The Royal Dublin Society have come to a resolution to commemorate the King's visit to that body, by erecting a full-sized statute of his Majesty, represented in his robes of the Order of St. Patrick, as he appeared at the Installation of that Order, to be placed within the precincts of the Royal Dublin Society. By the way of Southampton, letters have been received from.Havre so late as the 12th current. Duripg a fortnight the gale's of easterly winds liad been so heavy that thelo weie no arrivals of goods.. The markets were steady, and the. sales of cotton during the previous week, amounted "toS36s bales. Accounts had been recetved there from Rordeaux, stating that the vines had been severely injured by the weather, and that both wines and brandies had consequent!^ ad- vanced very materially. John Perry, aged <26> convicted at the last Devon Assizes of setting fire to his cottage, occupied by a man named Poller, at Ttleford, in the parish of Ottt-ry St. Mary, was last week executed on the drop m front of the County Gaol. After sen- tience he -becanie sensible of his awfuj.-situation, conducted' himself in a most becoming mari- ne. ■Before the cap w.tS drawn over his fare he repeated :he Lord's prayer after the Hev. Chaplain, clearly and steadily. He aga, inf<erH'aled the lord's Prayer by himsetf, after the cap was drawn down, and added," O Lord, receive mv.soul," v ben he rlropped the signal, and was launched into c eternity. —— PRICE OF STOCKS.
