BOARD OF GUARDIANS ELECTION, Tuesday, April 5th, 1898. TO THE RATEPAYERS OF THE BOROUGH OF ABERYSTWYTH. No. 2 WARD. Polling place:—NEW MARKET HALL, Market-street. LADIES AND GENTLEMEN, It is not necessary for me to offer any apology in coming before you as a candidate for a seat on the Aberystwyth Board of Guardians. But I may briefly state that I have resided in the town for nearly thirty years, and during the greater part of that time I have been in the habit of going in and out among the poor of the town and dis- trict. For the past twelve years my work has made it necessary for me to go among them still more fre- quently. For several years I have acted on the House Committee cf the Infirmary until the annual meeting held last month when I was outvoted. I am also in the habit of visiting the Workhouse. This all tends to bring me in direct contact with the poor and working classes, more especially where women and children are concerned. I have on two previous occasions offered myself for election on the Board, but have each time been defeated. This, however, does not deter me from again coming forward. 1. Because I hold it to be the duty of all citizens to do what they can for the good of the town or district in which they may reside. 2. Most of the work to be done on Boards of Guardians is women's work and work with which I am welPacquainted. 3. There are at present no women on the Aberystwyth Board. On the numerous Boards where women have served good results have always followed, and women have repeatedly proved their capacity to du most valuable administrative work. 4. By being on the Board my services would be far more useful among the poor than they can be as a private individual. I pay my full share of rates and taxes, and have as much interest in the right administration of the Poor Laws as any of the men who serve on the Board can have. Women have also certain interests in which men do not and can- not give:adequate and proper attention to. These, ladies and gentlemen, are the grounds on which I seek to represent you as guardian of the poor. It is in the power of the Ratepayers to elect or reject me. If elected, I will endeavour to use what powers I may possess in assisting in the right application of the principles of Local Government to local needs. The public good, based on genera utility, will always be my object. I am fully persuaded that by so doing I shall be serving the highest interests of the community.
