CORRIS.
CORRIS. HORTICULTURAL SHOW. On Saturday the fifth annual show of the Garden, Poultry and Industrial Society was held in r. n-arqu?e near the Railway Station under t,hp~patronage of the Marchioness (D) of London- derry, Mr A. R. Pryce, J.P., and Mr F. H. Birley, J.P. The Committee, who made complete arrangements for the holiingj of the show, was heaitcd by Mr John Lewis, Abercwineiddaw, as chairman. Mr Edward Lewis, •Gaewern Cottage, was treasurer, and Mr William Jones, ldris- street, performed the duties of secretary to the satisfaction of all concerned. The show included a remarkable number of depart- ments. In addition to the usual display of garden produce and flowers, prizes were offered for dogs and poultry and even the harm!oss necessary cat was not forgotten. There wore also sheep shearing competitions, slate splitting, sheep dog trials, as well as an industrial branch including drawing, carving, and sewing. Though the clouds were threatening the whole day, rain kept well off until the evenitiz. There was a fair, but not a good attend- ance, and during the afternoon the Dowager Marchioness of Londonderry attended and was heartily welcomed. The judges were—of the garden produce, Mr Gribble, Plas, Mr Jones, Nannau. and Mr Simons, Dolpelynllyn of dogs, hit- Carruthers, Machynlleth, and Mr J. T. Yaughan, Corris poultry, lilt J. P. ■Jones. Glasynys; of butter, e:s, and articles in class D, Mrs Edmunds, Unicorn Hotel, Machynlleth, and Mr John Morgan, Capel Scion, Llawrin; honey, MrWm. Roberts and Mr Richards, Pennal articles in class E and slate splitting, Mr Owen Jones, Festiniog articles in class F, Miss Jones, Maengwyn-street, and drawing, Mr T. H. Hunt. The favourableness of the year for tubers was shown in the numerous entries of potatoes without any sign of disease. There was also a creditable show of onionsjmd turnip, rhubarb, parsnips, peas, and beans. A good deal of the prize garden produce was grown from seed supplied by Messrs Clibrati and Son, by their agents, Messrs Lewis of Arthog. Fruit, however, was sparsely represented, the district probably, being too inclement for the growth of the usual forms of out-door grown fruits. With the exception of the familiar gooseberry—which was not large enough for a newspaper paragraph—the show of fruit, was represented by a few- plates of black currents and raspberries. In the flower department, a few cut blooms and about a dozen flowers in pots did duty for their class, though there is no reason why the cottage "of the humblest in Corris should not be brightened by flowers. The wild growth of the district in fox glove and heather, meadowsweet and bluebell, wild vetch and hone3' suckle' mountain ash and water lily was well in evidence, and prettily arranged. The skilful fingers of the busy house wife and her youthful Penelopes Slled the industrial class with bara ceirch, cloth hearthrugs, stockings, scarfs, aprons, ■and garments ot useful underwear fcr man, woman, and child! The particular industry of the locality was represented by several carvings in state. one large slab bearing the figure of a goat carved by Mr Hugh Jones, Penvgraig. A pretty bracket ornamented byjearving was also the work of Mr Jones. Photographs by Mr Young of Dolgelley andTowyn of the Oakeley Quarry were very interesting to the quarrymen. Poultry and dogs found a habitat outside the marquee. The judges gave prizes to nearly all the poultry, but overlooked two fine black game birds belonging to Mr Owen, Braiehgoch, probably because they were.but six weeks old. They certainly are very pretty well-bred birds. Out of three cats shown two were given a prize. The show of dogs consisted chiefly of sheep dous and Welsh terriers nearly all of which were placed by the judges. The following is a copy of the prize list:- Gardes PRODUCE.—CLASS A and B, open to cottagers of "£10 rental and under :—White cabbage, 1, Richard LI. Lewis, Machine House 2, Hugh P.
