LONDON PROVISIONS, Monday.—The arrivals last week from Ireland were 2,093 bales of bacon, and from foreign parts 5,63S bales bacon. The bacon market was generally quiet last week, and less money was t tk-ii. hue more especially for Danish, which was selling quite 4" to 63 under previous week's quotations. The butter trade was unaltered, and, on the whole, showed no improvement in prices. Lard market quieter. Several Bills were advanced a stage, th<« Tra:l? Union Provident Bill being read a third time and passed. In reply to the Duke of St Albans and the Marquis of Salisbury, the Chancellor made ail important statement in regard to the magisterial bench, explaining the action he had taken to obtain a morn equal balance of the political parties thereon. Lord Playfair, in answer to the Earl of Dunraven, gave some particulars concerning the comrnission about to be sent to the United States to inquire into the immigration questijn. HOUSE OF COMMONS, TiirH<i)AY. Questions were asked concerning the office of Judge Advocate-General, the tri-regnal financial relations, the appointment of magistrates, the Scottish Church Bill, amd other matters. Mr Gladstone m.ide an important statement on the course of public business, and, on the motion for going into Committee of Supply, the army question, with reference to the report of Lord Wantage's Committee, was discussed, 011 a motion by Lord Woliner. HOUSE OF LORDS, Fiit AY. Lord Brassey raised a short discussion on the state of the navy. Lord Spencer expressed satisfaction with the condition of the fleet and the progress of the ship-building programme. HOUSE OF COMMONS, FRIDAY. Mr Gladstone moved that the house should sit Saturday for Government business. Mr A..T, Balfour protested against the proposal, which arose, he from the fact that the Government ha.d committed themselves to the policy of bringing on the Home Rule Bill a seond time before Easter. Sir W. Harcourt said the opinion of the country was that issue should be joined at the earliest possible moment on the question of Home Rule. There would be plenty of time to bring- it before the country at large. Mr J. Chamberlain, Mr Labouchere, and Mr J. Lowther having spoken, Mr Hanbury moved as an amendment that, as Oil Wednesdays, the House should not sit to-day after six o'clock. On a division there voted—for Mr Hanbury's amendment, 231; against, 252 Government majority, 21. Mr Gladstone said that from the 13th February to the Kith March was a longer period than had elapsed between the infrroduct- ion and the second reading of any great measure intro- duced bv the late Government, and was amply sufficient for consideration and reflection. After further debate, in which Mr Goschen and Mr Heacag-e took part, Mr Gladstone's motton was carried by 25G to 229. At the evening sitting Mr H. Hobhouse moved a resolution for the ar.pointment of a commission to consider the ditti- culties in the way of legislation by private members. Mr Gladstone, while sympathising with the motion, said he did not think this was the right time for a commission. The motion was withdrawn. HOUSE OF COMMONS, SATURDAY. An hour was occupied with questions on a variety of subjects, from the politics of the Labour Correspondents it:) the superannuation of teachers and the probable condition of Ireland under Home Rule, Mr Gladstone said the debate on the Evicted Tenants Commission Report would be taken to-night. On the motion forgoing into Committee of Supply the case of Dr. Hricrers was discussed and the grievances of workmen in the gun factories considered. Other questions arose on the Army Estimates and at a quarter-past seven o'clock, in reply to Mr Balfour, the Prime Minister said that if there was disposition after the Secretary for War had made his state- ment to discuss the vote, he should not object to its postponement. The House then went into Committee of Supply. Mr Campbell-Bannerman made his statement as to the condition of the army, progress was reported, and the House adjourei at 25 minutes past eight o'clock. HOUSE OF COMMONS, MONDAY. Mr Asquith, answering a question, said he was calling- for information with a view to legislation placing restrictions on the sale of revolvers. Sir W. Harcourt, in reply to Mr Heneage, said the Government would not move the rejection of the Channel Tunnel Bill, which would he left to the decision of the House. The right hon. gentleman, replying to Mr A. J. Balfour, said the Prime Minister desired him to say that in consequence of F' delay in the progress of Supply it was obvious that the discussion on the second reading of the Home Rule Bill could not be commenced this week. The debate therefore would not be commenced until after the Easter vacation. It would be the first business after Easter, and would he taken de die in diem. In Committee of Supply Mr T. W. Russell made an attack on the Evicted Tenants Com- mission and moved the rejection of the vote for the inquiry. Mr J. Morley defended the appointment and constitution of the Commission, and said that Mr Justice Mathew carried on the inquiry in a thorough spirit of _t impartiality. Mr A. J. Balfour and Mr J. Chamberlain joined in the attack on the Commissijn, and the Attorney General spoke for the Go\ernment. Mr Russel's resolution was defeated by 287 to 250. Before the House rose the Home Rule Bill was prt down for Monday next, and on Mr Balfour asking the reason Sir W. Harcourt said the reason was that it was impossible to fix the exact date.
