: OUR SHORT STORY
OUR SHORT STORY A SMUGGLER'S COURTESY. Ptus was disappointed. From his seat on Was dooroll of the little hospice tJir.gm# to the mountain side, he looked across the valiey to the winding blue line of the river and the dis- tant mountain* tops softened in the afternoon baze-and sighed. Now this was the very afternoon when Fratxz should have been the last man in the world to aigh, for to-morrow be would marry Tresta, and em the afternoon before hie wedding day the man who would marry the prettiest girl in the Iftrtn village at the foot of the mountain should have found for himself a more pleasant oocupa- gion tha.n nursing a. better disappointment. It waa not that Trceta was not the prettiest girl he had ever seen. Her dtok eyes and wealth of sombre hair were the prizes coveted fer all the young men, and the envy of all the Tillage maidens. It was not that Franz had not been completely successful in his suit. Thanks to his own good looks and the money (hat tourists bed left at his little mountain inn tt was quite to the contrary. It was not even tittit the morrow might mar <he festivities with -in. There were only lazy bits of fleecy cloud lagging; across the sky. It wa& not in any of jlbese that hia disappointment lay. Franz had pictured the wedding to himself countless times, and always the chief detail was muaio. But aJae! the organist was ill. It WM too late to tindJ a. substitute, and he had granted so much on it. He could have covered ftli face with his hands and oried like an over- £ GPMRt boy, for a weddiotr day comes but once in a lifetimè-that is, to such men as Franz. Of course there would be the candles and the village festivities, but Franz had set his heart on the very part that would now be lacking. If only-but he sighed, and began to Vish he had never contemplated matrimony. He sat long in the afternoon sunshine, smok- ing, dreaming, regretting, and presently, soothed by his pipe, and the soft rustling of the W«s of the grape vine above his head, he fell asleep. The shadow of the mountain was well across the valley when he beheld a stranger standing before him. At first he was uncertain whether it was a real personage or some new cljaracter which had crept into his dreams. He gat up and rubbed his sleepy eyes. The stranger removed his halt and bowed low. "I am sorry to disturb you. Can I get a. bumper of your ale?" And being-assured that he could, 00 followed the innkeeper into the tap-room. Imagine Franz's eurpri-o when be saw the stranger close the heavy oak door, and, delibe- rately sliding the bolt, place his broad shoul- ders against the solid timbers. "There need be no fear of a. lack of secrecy," said Franz, as he ftooped to draw the ale. His guest glanced at the heavily.budded door. "I should say not," he eaid. The ale he drank with evident relish. "That is good," said he, and put the stone bumper down on the table with a thump- "Now," he continued, "for BUSINESS. The peasants hereabouts tell me that FRANZ) the keeper of the iirn on ihè mountain, is the only man who can guide me through the three short passes to the Crescent. Is that right?" "At most times yes, but not now." "Are you not Franz?" "I am," was the innkeeper's short-sighted reply. "Very good," and the stranger showed his white teeth in a. broad smile. "But I cannot go," Franz expostulated. "Ti. morrow is my wedding-day, and, surely, he is an ungallant cad who postpones his wedding- day for the paltry coins that guiding a stranger through the passes brings. The White Horse is but a. few miles to the South. The guides are the best in the mountains, and the pass is much easier to travel. 'Tis the delay of but ew hours you incur by taking it." The stranger smiled again. "When I introduce myself," he said, "you will understand better how much a few hours means toinie." He picked up a piece of chalk, which was used in marking cask heads, and wrote on the door the word "Zedda." Franz gasped. His guest was the most noted smuggler and outlaw of the mountains. But he stuck bravely to his assertion. "Zedda or no Zedda," he said, striking the table with his clenched fist, "I will not go." "I respect your gallantry," the outlaw said smili- ly, "but-" He gave a peculiar thrilling whistle, and through the iron grating of the tap-room's little window Franz saw a score of roughly-dressed men come from their place of concealment behind the inn." Resistance was out of the question. Franz accepted the position with anything but alacrity. And so it happened that the sunrise of his wedding-day found Franz at the head of a. band of joking smugglers in the threejesses. At first he accepted his fate with grim silence, but as the sun rose higher no one, how- -ever accustomed to the scenes, could resist the influence of the grandeur of reck and' rugged outline, and Franz felt his heart warm and glow as it always did when he was here among the mountains he loved best. When the snow at the entrance of the third pass was crunching under their feet he was walking beside the leader telling him all about the coming marriage, about Tresta, and espe- cially about his disappointment at not having the music. Zedda; listened with thoughtful interest until at sunset the Crescent was reached and the .journey was at an end. Do you know the mountains well enough to go back at midnight Very well. I rihall send a man back with you, that hereafter we may know the way. Now for a rest." And the ohief led the way to a shelter of boughs. Franz sleptr soundlv until awakened! by the smuggler who was to go back with him. Refreshed with wine and meat they s-tax-ted out. His companion was muffled to the eyes and seldom spoke. They travelled haidi all night, and a few hours after sunrise next day reached the end of the first, pans. Here the smuggler stopped, and!, bidding Fpanz adieu, watched him desoend the path which led down to the little inn. Tresta laughed and eri when Franz told his adventure, and late that fternoon they went to the church where the jid* priest awaited them. As Franz with Tresta on his arm came up the aisle at the head of the little prooession, the church was suddenly filled with such music as he had never heard before. He looked down inquiringly at his betrothed, but herey€s filled with wonder, were alreadv turr-J ta.W He thought much lessi of the ceremony than of the soft music which stole down from the organ loft. And when they turned from the altar the triumphal notes rose again, and not until the door was reached did they cease. Franz was in an ecstasy of joy. Over in the oorner, where the winding stairs led up to the organ loft, a mil ed figure was slowly working its way between the few vil- lagers who were present towards the door. No one noticed the stranger until Franz espied him in the half gloom. Then suddenly the truth flashed upon his mind, and, leaving his bride, he rushed over to the stranger and seized him by both hands. The dark lips parted, and the even, white teeth gave prominence to that smile. And Franz atone knows it was Zedda. ——i——m—i

f MUNICIPAL TACNCIES AT CARDIFF. DEPUTATIONS WAIT ON PROMI- NENT MEN It seems to be taken for GRAFTED that the vacancies on the aldermanic bench of the Cardiff County Council will result in the eleva- tion of the mayor and Councillor Rams dale. Accordingly, both political parties are en- deavouring to find suitable candidates for the Roath and Park Wards. An influential deputation waited upon ex-Councillor Shackell on Thursday night with a request that he would come out in the Conservative interest for the Roath Ward. Mr. Shackell did not hold out any hope of returning to public life at present, but promised to con- sider the views of the deputation, and give a definite answer later. Great disappoint- ment will be felt by a large niimler of bur- gesses in the ward if Mr. Shackell cannot be induced to fill once more one of the seats in the council, his services in the past having been thoroughly appreciated, not only by those who elected him, but the ratepayers generally throughout the town. A deputa- tion representing the Liberal party has also waited upon Mr. Charles Clarke, Newport- road, with the view of inducing him to be- come a candidate. It was pressed upon him that he was about the only man who could retain the seat for the party, but Mr. Clarke, like Mr. Shackell, has so far declined to give a definite answer.

RESIGNATION OF PROF. § HUGHES,…
RESIGNATION OF PROF. § HUGHES, t GENEROUS GIFT TO THE SOUTH WALES COLLEGE. General regret will be felt at the announce- ment now made that Profoesor Alfred Hughes will be compelled, for family reasons, to leave the neighbourhood of Cardiff before the end of the winter session, and, consequently, to resign his chair of anatomy at the University College. Before leaving. he has placed at the disposal of the college, under very generous conditions, his anatomieal collections, on which he hat spent large Bums of money and many years of labour. Professor Hughes brought with him from Edinburgh the reputatisn of being one of the most popular and successful of the extra- mural teachers, and dvring his short tenure of the chair at Cardiff be has greatly added to his former reputation. It is fresh in the minds of most of u? that one of his atudents obtained only las-„ summer the highest distillation in anatomy given by the University of London, an honour which has only twice been the forking of any provincial school to obtain during the la«t twenty years. When Professor Hughes goes the students will lose the guidance of a clear and inessive teacher, and one who never spared himself in the exercise of his teaching work. His colleague* and very Niany in the town will miss his genial and lovable presence, but his name wiil reD ain in the history of the school as the fust readier and able organiser of an iroporbant department.. It is hoped by many thr-t even in the near future Profes&cr Hughes may return for short periods of time and continue his anatomical investigations at the college vn-der the title of Emeritus professor.
