- OUR SHORT STORY
OUR SHORT STORY DIANA AND THE SPIDER. The "Band, Gusnet, and Seam" is a society horuited from an exclusive circle of Nob Hdll's Mouthful matrons. It meets through the '^ter, with aggravated activity during Lent, &t l*oueea of the members; its motto is "First to the indigent" its symbol, a thimble, 01', crossed by ft pair of scissors argent. on a background of flannel gules, surmounted by a 8POol of thread oouchant. The demure maid, who serves bouillon, tea and ohocdlabe to the society's fair Dorcases, bews tales from every qtiarter of the globe, of life in the summer colonies along the New England coast, of yachting oruisse through Norwojfiam fiords in the yellow wake of the Baidnight mm, of walking tours in the Iandes, ftd oampiog trips in the north woods. After serving tfhe Bradamante of the society '"ith a oup of tea and a caviare sandwich, she to a dusky corner of the room. Wihen the fluffy-haired Mrs. Jack, the so- eioty's president and the hostess of the occasion, begins her story, there is a lull in the talk, which the wind fill, in with a neatily-executed M- peggio. Mis. Jack's mouth droops in wistful curves, .ond beside her eyes an infant's would seem un- *°phiataaated. "Jack says I must go with hinl to Africa, I shall never dans to look a tiger in the lice, after experience on the Big Muddy." Mnt. Jack's adventures h&To fauilifuuied the sooiefby with Tm Cap. Big Bug, Bumble Bee, I and Medécirne lÐaJt. Buit the Big Muddy offers delightful fields for speou- I latioii,, for it has not yet found a place on any map, a.nd iiia onSiy high roads are the lialf- obliterated trails left by the Utes when they unwillingly departed for new hunting-grounds. "You remember the big-horn I shot after Jack and the guides had tracked him for ten days over the Rattlesnake Range in Wyoming ?" MnI. Jack continues plaintively. The society remembers the big horn, as well as the giant shark in the Mexican Gulf, the mountain lion and the cinnamon bear witih the amber eyes picked off by Mrs. Jack's rifle in the San Francisquito Mountains. The idea of her not daring to look a tiger in the face iinder any circumstances t^jtes the credulity of the uociety. Has she ever known fear, ever quailed before beast. bird, or fish—this modern A rtemis? When she accompanies her liuiband on his hunting expeditions, she wears the woods' autumn, livery-leaf-brewn and scarlet—an ab- breviated skirt, and leggings of brown corduroy, I a scarlet leather shirt with elk's teeth for but- tons, a hat feetooned with trout and salmon flies and shining leaders. A cartridge belt girdles her slender waist, with its depending revolver and hunting knife. It is remarkable that Mrs. Jack has escaped the cinnamon's embrace, «v>i Bruin might well be jpardoned such an indiscretion- "Jack has always said that my physical courage first attracted him. But I had never confessed to him that there was one test to which I should be unequal. It came on the Big Muddy. Listen: "We were camped in the quaking aspen. Snow had fallen, and! the elk were coming down. You could hear them bugling on every side just be. fore dawn. It is easy to stop a bank of elk, as they pace near your camp by imitating their call upon an empty cartridge shell. I have learnt the triidk, and Jack had no hesitation in permitting me to choose my owr trail one morning and follow it alone afootj/ he and the guides scattering in other directions. The taste of the camp coffee was still upon my lips; my cheeks tingled with the frosty breath of the morning air as I kept cautiously to the windward of the elk, whose trumpeting stirred me like martial music. A stray bear track showed here and there in the fresh snow. But I was after elk. A hundred miles lay between our camp and the nearest settlement. Ah, the solitude of those woods!" Mrs. Jack learns back in her chair, and sighs reminisoenitly as she gaies into the blazing he&rth fire-a. charming picture in her house- gown old blue, brightened with gleams of Persian embroidery, inwoven with uncut jewels. "I had gone three miles, perhaps four, over fallen spruce up the steep side of a ragged mountain, when crash across my trail came a band of elk, headed by a magnificent bull. "Crouching behind a boulder I waited. I ha.ve waited so often for big game, from Alaska to the Gulf. Jack says that I have seen more than he can ever hope to see, if he lives to be a it hundred. My hand was steady. Jack often gsta buck fever. I mover do> I took deliberate aim. The elk came toward tho bullet and dropped dead without a struggle. Blazing the trail, as I retraced it towards camp for the pack animals, I saw that there were new bear tracks. 1 was not out ihat day for bear, and I did not care to come upon one alone, although I had no thought of shirking the encounter were it forced upon me "A bear in a bear-pit is a clumsy creature. In the wood he challenges your admiration by his clever fashion of covering the ground with- out apparent effort. The one I soon descried abead of me was lumbering along like a bunch of tumble weed, lengthening the distance be- tween us at a rapid rate. "Foolishly I indulged myself in a shot at him, striking his shoulder. He turned upon me with a roar of pair.. At that instant I needed all my neiSve. This time I chose a tree for cover and waited. He came on, without a halt, straight towards me. I fired again, missing him. I was just about to try a third I. shot when the test came of which I have spoken." "The test?" murmurs the society,, breath- lessly. "The test to my courage to which I had always felt I should be unequal. The thing I had dreaded in my forest wanderings with Jack." "What?" the society demands, with one voice. "I had raised my rifle when I felt something fluttering in my hsir. I fancied a leadeFifaa^I slipped from my hat rim. Oh, horror, it-was -a spider!—and as I shook my head violently to dislodge it, it struggled into my ear.. "I have never been conscious cf having fired that third shot. Somehow the rifle was dis- charged, and by the same ohance the bullet lai 1 the bear low. I "I faisAcdL and when I rauna to myself. I W18 lying across the bear's body, with six strange men standing around me. "Ten thousand boiler factories were at work in my brain. 'Hear the noises,' I cried. 'Will no one stop them?' "And -now comes the strangest part of my story. "The engineer of Jack's yacht once got a mosquito in his ear. It drove him quite mad before we could find a doctor. He hung over the yacht's side, held by six of the crew, begging for death. When the doctor arrived upon the scene, he applied a handkerchief, wet with ether, to the man's ear, quieting the mosquito's strug- gles and restoring the man to sanity. I believed myself in the man's plight, stark, staring mad, when, upon this peak of Danen, 500 miles from an ambulance and a. surgeon, I heard one of the men to whom I had so wildly appealed, reply quietly: 'Have no fear, madam, you are in safe hands, for we are all doctors.' "They deluged my ear with water from a neir- by stream, which they brought in a tin cup. Finding the spider still unsubdued, one of the dootoriB asked for hypodermic syringe. Five were instantly proffered. An icy arrow pene- trated, seemingly, to the seat of the grey matter, still without effect upon the spider, whose perni- cious activity caused me indescribable agony. 1 Etfaer is the only remedy,' I said, at last, and, as coherently as I could, repeated the story of the engineer. <• "'Efther,' cheerfully returned the doctor, who was attending to me, 'why, of course. Brown, fetch out your ether bottle,' and if Brown did not produce from the depths of his waistcoat pocket a small bottle of ether, may I be instantly retired from the presidency of our society. R transpired later that Brown was a phimeian with an alien hobhv—emtomo-: logy-and carried ether with him everywhere to anassthetise his specimens. "In an instant relief came — such blessed I relief as only one who has passed through an experience like mine can appreciate. "TTie rest of the story is soon tofld. When I gathered myself together, the six doctors presented themselves to me with due formality. They dined that might at our camp, on my elk. "Jack was thoroughly ashamed of me. For What did the elk and the bear matter, with the memory of the apider fresh in our minds ? "No, decidedly," Mrs. Jack repeats, as the maid fetches her second cup of tea, "I shall never dare to look a tiger in tihe face, after my Waterloo on the Big Muddy. It would have been a pleasing legend for my tombstone— this •One To whom the forests were an open book; I Who joined to Dia.na.'a daring the skill of her spear, Lies Here Slain by a bug in her ear.'

IBENEFICES BILL.
I BENEFICES BILL. The London correspondent of the Leeds "Mercury" says:—From an authoritative ecclesiastical source I learn that Clause 1 of the Benefices Bill will almost certainly be dropped. In other words, the patronage part of the Bill is to go. But Clauses 2 and 3, which give the bishop power to refuse to insti- tute an unfit presentee, and also facilitate the removal of incumbents deemed incompetent and idle, will be pressed forward. It is said that the Government is ao far impressed by the agitation for Church reform that before its period of office closes it will introduce a mea- sure of self-government for the Establishment.
HATRED OF A BROTHER.
HATRED OF A BROTHER. FRENCH YOUTH'S EXTRAOR- DINA.RY SUICIDE. A Dakiel's telegram from Paris on Monday says :—A boy of fifteen, son of well-to-do trades- people, whose name is withheld, committed suicide last night under remarkable circum- stances. For some unaccountable reason he had allowed himself to cherish a violent hatred of his only brother, four years older than him. I self, and disputes between the two became so frequent and violent that the family were obliged to send the elder youth away :rto the country in order to obtain peace. A few days passed without incident, but yesterday the younger boy fhut himself up in his room and shot himself through the heart. He died in hospital a few hours later, after terrible suffer- ing. A letter wag found written by him, ir which he stated thai his hatred for his brother was so intense that it made life insupportable, and he therefore resolved to kill himself. He cursed his brother with his dying breath, and strictly forbade his parents to allow him to attend his funeral or to keep any of his things as souvenirs.
