---LOCAL AXLSEMEXTS.J'
LOCAL AXLSEMEXTS. J' THE "GAIETY GIRL" AT THE ? TEEAI'SB ROYAL. Cardiffians are not unacquainted with this plo: or the "Gaiety Girl" and all its accom- panying delights, as :\1r. George Edwardes's company playt-d the piece in Cardiff some tim-t ago, but with the musical comedy which was presented at the Royal on Monday night few, .M-eiuaips, were familiar, for last night's pro- duction of "A Gaieity Girl" wis an improve- ment in every way en the old piece. Miss Cissy Graha-me has olxained all the lights of production, and everything is new. The com- pany, v.hich altogether numbers 55, and is pro- bably the largest company now on tour, al- -ic thoug'h not including any of the artistes who travelled with Mr. George Edwardes, is excel- [ lent, and the whole cast is particularly well sustained. Mr. Templar Saxe as "Captain Charles Goldfield," who was in the original caste of "Morocco Bound" at the Shaftesbury, London, wa, of course, the recipient of un- bounded a.wlause, his song's. es.peo.iaHv the old favourite, "Tommy Atkins," going with all their old swing. The "Little Major." in the hands of Mr. G. Wilkinson, produced roars of laughter. Mr. L. Russell, son of Sir Charles Russell, of the "Liverpool Post," estab- lished himself a great favourite in the pa.rt of "Romney Farquhar," another officer of the "Life Guards," with his pleae-ins voice, whi.e Mr. :F.f'<l EmILe. and Mr. Wm. Grcr.-f.-s-Wn'tfoa iir the roles of "S-r Lewis Grey." the old dtvv>xw-oouTt iudgii a.nd the narrator of those fur.ny stories, and "Dr. Montagu Rrierl-y" reapecitdvely. Each played up to his reputation. Especially were their efforts worthy of nraise in the bathing- machine scene on tli.e Riviera, where each m his guiieltss admiration of "Lady Yirgima" (Miss Mabel Yoimge) falls a victim to the wiles of impersonation of "Ladv Grev." the divorce judo's "plain" vufe, who has .-linped into the machine nil unaware?, after it has been vacatcd by the adorable "Lady Vir- ginia." "Alma Somerset," "The Gaiety Girl," as played by Mi^s Hetty Dene, was a gieat favourite, while the villa mess of the piece, Mina," who slips the diamond rang into the pocket of "Alma Somerset and causes all the mischief, played h?r Frenohy part to perfec- tion. A beautifully-executed pas-ds-seul was give.n by Miss Minnie Blanchard in the fr,t act, and she again appeared in the carnival I scene, in company with the Misses Florence White. Rhocla Wmdrum, and Minnie Murray. The audiesice. although highly appreciative, was in these instances certainly too exacting, as in such a heated atmo=p}tfre and on such a night three encores for 1, dance is. perhaps, a little "de tron." The remainder of the caste vra.s all up to the mrrk," and the laughter of the audience and the merriment of the piece were unflagging from start to fi.nish. Grand Theatre, Cardiff. The popular drama, of "The Ooiteen Bawn," bv Dion Bouoio&ult, was staged at the Grand Theatre, Cardiff, on Monday night by a power- ful company, including Miss Constance Bellamy and Mr- Shiel Barry. The piece was eyceiientlv produced by artistes thoroughly suited to the parts. The new and pm-tv sc.:nery by Mr. H. Griffiths was ably placed on the stage by Mr. Charles Pyne. and the beautiful lime-light effects showing Killarney by moonlight reflected credit upon Mr. Evans. A piei.smg feature was the songs by Miss Bel- lamy. TEE EMPIRES. Cardiff. To those who have never seen Frank Maura, the Mexican marvel, we say "Go to the Car- diff Empire this week." Of aU the many smart speciality artistes Maura 1, the king, for his exhibition :s one which, if the wide world were to be searched, it would be difficult to find its equal. Perhaps liis turn is best summed up in the words "an exposition of sleight, of feet." In balancing balls, chairs, and tables, the Mexican i.s as smart and clever with his nether limbs as the average person would be with his hands were he ? possessed of ten times the natural number. Without n. tingle mistake Maura at the tunie time kept the articles mentioned above flying about in mid-air in daxzling confusion solely by the use of his feet, and in like manner went through other tricks too numerous and compii- I

Victoria Theatre, Newport. "Sowing the Wind," one of Sidney Grundy's channmg pieces, seems to be a compromise between the problem play and modern drama, which immediately preceded the problem play. The story as set forth by the dramatist, is a most interesting one, and as a work of art the play is cmeng.-t the eur-oesses of reoemt years. The central idea which is worked out is the question whether a child shall suffer for the sins of its parents, and ■excellent opportunity is presented to the actors and actresses to sjive an effective answer to the question- Some of the scenes are among the mort powerful of the modem drama, and the play is one which, without presenting any objectionable problems, enlists the full sympathy of the audience. The play is ably presented a.t the Victoria Theatre this week bv Mr. Stanley Hope's talented oom- pamy. and is bound to art tract crowded houses. —w—

Wallace used his right with terrible effect, and when tii<e tenth round arrived Corfield was growing apparently weaker. In the fourteenth round Wallace tried to force the fighting, but was splendidly met by the Sheffielder. In the fifteenth round Corfield twice sent the Bir- mingham Ir-d to earth, and in the next the -1 1 Sheffield'er got still further in front. Towards the close of the eevetiteenth round Wallace diropned: his hands, andl let Corfield hit him all over the ring. ABANDONED HIS CRUTCHES.
ABANDONED HIS CRUTCHES. ANOTHER EXTRAORDINARY CURE AT HOLYWELL. I One of the most interesting cases that have become prominent at Holywell this season is that of a soldier named James I<oftus, 48 years of age. of Boston, Lincolnshire. Loftus served 21 years with the colours in the 4th Battalion Rifle Brigade. Some two or three vears ago Loftus became, an invalid, and for the past eight months he had not been able to put his feet to the ground or move without crutches. He arrived at Holywell last week, and was carried into St. Winifride's Well. Whilst in the water his agony was so intense that he fainted. "It was," he said, "as if all the sinews were being tern out of rqy body and then a galvanic battery was applied." How- ever, he managed to walk unaided out of the well. He has left his crutches behind him.

Love His Ruin
Love His Ruin WORTH MORE THAN A MIL- LION r tW0 YEARS AGO. Infatuation for an Employe's Wif Caused a Merchant to Neglect Busi- ness. Politics, and Friends. The arrest of Frank A. Magowan as he was about to leave for New York, on the charge of breaking up the home of John Albert Barnes. created a profound sensation at Tren- ton. N.J. Magowan was born at Trenton, and grew with the town. Almost everybody knew him,, and his frank and cordial manner, his abounding soirits, his clear, manly voice, and his good looks made him irresistible. Everybody vielded to his charm. He came of a humble family, and had to make his own way in the world. But it would have been impossible to keep him down. He had a clever brain for business, as well as for making friends. He did not know what it was to be weary. He worked day and nighty and had that happy disposition that can oombine work with play. It has been a marvel for j ears when he got time to sleep. For fifteen years at least .no business man has been at work earlier or with a clearer head, yet no man about town in this place, where there is a very fast set of young men. went at it more earnestly, or sat up with it later. When he reached a certain position, and hau. a few thousand dollars put by, he began to branch out into all sorts of enter- prises in a way that made all the old-fashioned men of capital in business predict an idik* diate collapse. But he kept on year after year growing richer, managing half a dozen large manufac- tories wisely and profitably, attending to even the details of such varied industries as the making of bicycles, of oilcloths, of rubber broods, of pottery, of beer. Two years ago he made a sworn statement of his assets, and the statement-, carefully verified at the time, showed that his personal fortune .was l,10u.W)0dols., and that his various interests brought him in a much larger income than the normal interest upon that sum. In addition to all this business he had found time to be twice mayor of Trenton, and hud made the whole town grateful by honestly and economically spending the public money lit improvements that have enabled. Trenton to become what ehe is. His business enterprises, building up the tC\9IL, employing several thou- sand people, made M much for his popularity as his public record. It was this popukriiy that made him a dangerous candidate, in 1892.. for the Republican nomination for Governor, and that has kept him among the first Repub- licans of the State. He had always been very liberal, and his wife, whom he married when he was still strug- gling at the bottom of the ladder, and his five cididren benefited diiefly by his extravagance. For a long time they dived in a pretty house at -No. 68, Clinton-street. Two years and a half ago he began to build a palace next door to this house. It was presently the most spa- cious feouse in Trenton, and in the splendour of its furnishings beyond any tiling that Tren- ton's .rich men had ever dreamed of. Two vears a<go, in the summer of 1893, if ago- wan was at Belmar. To the same place, from' their home in Ohio. came Mr. and Mrs. John. Albert "P'TTPPS. a young Canadian and Ms wife and their cruet-year-oid cutuytu<»". -^bey 1-ad. married in Toronto in loBo. Mir. Baj-nes was in the rubber manufacturing business, ajia. M he was pretty shrewd, was getting on welL But his wife. a beautiful young woman of 25 years, was much cleverer than he. She had: a fine singing voice and was fond of reading of the better sort. She had ambition and in- tense emotions. Macro wan s attentions to the fair Canauian 'became marked. Fe -offered Barnes the manageship of his big rubber company in Tren- ton at a salary which Barnes could not refuse. It is alleged in Mr. Barnes's complaint that Macro wan and Mrs. Barnes made trips to New York, to Philadelphia, to Pittsburg, to Chicago, and that Magowan resorted to many •extrava^ances- in f^ui-rouriding Mrs. Barnes with luxury. His ihoteti bills, his restaurant bills were the amazement of the auditors m his business office. He let his vast business enterprise suffer. He let his political ambitions go. He gave 1,0 heed to the counsels of his friends. His friends who were interested in hia business enterprises saw what was coming, and hastened to protect theorise,ve>. When two of the largest concerns in which he was interest ed were on the verge of a receiverslhip. when his presence was imiperatiiv&ly necessary, he dropped everything and rusihed off to Okla- homa. and brought suit for divorce from h'3 wife at El IRpno. While he was jpotie receivers were appointed for two large compani'tip of which he was president. He was gone over two weeks, no one knew wheTP. Presently he appeared upon the scene aTain. He was as bold. as energetic, as confident as of did. He worked earlv and late. cheering on his friend* beating bac-k his creditors, making T-n gallant fight. And since his return in tho first wesk in August, we financial battle has been going on in his favour. Barnes brought his charges several days ago. and Commition<~T Jarne-s S. Aitken. of tJiei Supreme Court, handed down the papers with these words ""ritten on them, "SufSHentlv rrroved that Frank A. Magowan mined Helen Edith Barnes, and has been guilty of erinina-l int maov wi*h her." The r>rr.*at was ordered, and when Magowan was broujht into court his bond wa* fixed at 25.000 dollar*. It is said that Ba-nes will bring a civil action for 100.000 dollar* against "Magowan. Mi«. P-<rnes and hFr daughter n-e with Dr. and M-3. Winne at the Hotel Windsor, in New YoHk City. M^wrowan. in retaliation. nan Barnes a.rrpsted on the charge of perjury- Bsrnes waa takfn before Justice Couit^r. and released in 5.000 dollars bail, waiving a hearing. It mu.,rt: be said that Magowan s friends stdll stick to him. and say that his side of the famalr scand'd is vet to be told, and tfosut when it ia he will have as manv friends 4, ever. -?--
