DETAILS OF PLAY. It was some twenty minutes past the adver- tised time when, after the usual photograph- ing process, the teams took the field. There would then be present about 8,000 spectators. The sun was shining brightly, but the frost was still keen, and every moment saw the ground getting harder. Gould led his men on to the field first, and received a. hearty cheer. Gibson followed at the head of his men directly afterwards, the Scotch also receiving an en- thusiastic reception. The Scotsmen winning the toss, chose to play from the town end, with a slight breeze in their favour. Boucher started operations for Wales, and, from the Scotch return, Evan Lloyd returned to touch nearly lat. the. centre. A line out at tlhis spot .saw E. Lloyd obtain possession. He attempted to punt back. but the Scotch forwards got right on top of him and com- menced a loose rush, which took them clean down to within half a dozen yards of the Welsh line before they were checked. A punt back saw Gowans make his mark on the touch line and the ball was placed for Neil- son, who, however, made a very poor attempt at goal, and Bancroft cleared to touch on the far side of the ground. Scrimmaging was aeain commenced in the centre. In one of the first packs the Scotch forwards held the advantage and Bancroft had to save at a very critical moment. Pearson punted into M'Ewan's hands, who punted into M'Ewan's hands, and the latter got very close to the Welsh line before being pulled down just outside the goal line. Scrim- naging was again oommenced. Elliott made one big dash—in fact, got over-but for wma irregularity was called back. Play wasftiil confined to the Welsh quarters, and, try as they would, they could not clear their line. The Scotch forwards were going great guns, and time alter time initiated attacks, which only the most desperate tackling on the part of the Welsh kept under. The Welsh front line came through a scrimmage, and managed to get, to outside their 25. The home forwards, however, almost immediately afterwards took play baok to its old position close on the Welsh line. Up to the present no attempt attenaed with any degree of success had been made by the forwards on either side to send out to the three-quarter line. Once Elliot tried it for Scotland, but the ball never started fairly on its journey. A few yards at a. time the W eishinen managed to work away from the line until the centre was reached. Then Simpson started his back line, but some smart tackling by Evan Lloyd stopped them at a critical moment. Out of a loose scramble that followed the for- wards. headed by Hannan, brought play up to the centre. The first scrimmage formed at this spot again saw the Scottish eight gain an advantage and attempt to start their backs. The attack, however, was nipped in the bud, and play brought into t-lie far side of the field. Pear- son, with a useful kick into touch, for the first time during the progress of the game, moved play into the Scottish half. The ball was, how- ever, driven back by the home forwards for a minute, only, however, to see the Welsh for- wards come to the attack, and scrim- maging was next commenced close up to tlir home quarter flag. How dangerous the Scotch recognioed the Weish thira lins to be was shown from the fact that botih lüÙ Scotch centres were standing off- side waiting to intercept the Welsh passing. Once Biggs did get the ball out, but it never had a fair chance of starting on its journey. Scrummaging- was etill in the Scotch half, the Welshmen varying their tactics, alternately heeling out and wheeling. On one occasion Graham and Nichol ca.me round and com- menced a dribble which was only stopped when within hadf a dozen yards of the Scotch line. They were pegging very hard at it, in this position for several minutes. Then a free to Scotland drove play back to the centre of the field, from where the Scottish forwards drove it down to within a dozen yards of the Welsh goal line. Here Ellictt started some passing, which was intercepted by Parfitt, and he succeeded m travelling up to the centre, Vhere he sent the ball out to the three-quarter line. It was fumbled, however, and the attack finished when the half-way line had been reached. At the centre of the field play was stopped for a couple of minutes through Parfitt being hurt.. The fact he had to be taken off the field and pla.y continued without him. This necessitated a re-arrangement of the WelBJI team. Boucher came out of the pack to centre three-quarter, and Badger went out from the wing aaid partnered Biggs behind the pack. Adopting rushing tactics, the Scotch pack immediately took play to the WcMi line, but from the first scrimmage the Wei A, headed by Graham, Packer, and Mills, travelled up the field and were well over the half-way line before they were stopped. Scrimmaging back again followed, which was a bit in favour of the Scotsmen, and yard by yard they travelled down bhe right touch line until well inside the Welsh 25. A wheel at this spot was not so cleverly executed as the Welshmen desired, and they gained little or nothing by it. Then, from the touch line, play went right. across to the centre of the field directly opposite, and about ten yards out from the Welsh goal posts, and the next eorimmage Scotland got the ball, but Lloyd wid Biggs were round too quick for the home halves, and. guining possession, l'eo lieved their side by tatung play to the centre. Then play slackened down a bit, and just out- side the Welsh 25 some hard scrimmages were fought out. Eventually Elliott got possession, and punted over the Welsh line, Bancroft con- ceding a minor. From the drop out Smith re- turned in fine style to well over ihe half-wav line, where the Scotch forwards, with some smart footwork, again rushed play to the Welsh 25. Here they attacked very vigorously, and eventually the ball was again sent over by the forwards, but Bancroft managed to kick it dead, conceding a second minor. After the drop out play went to the centre of the field, where, after Pearson had returned to touch, Dodds made his mark exactly on the certre line, and the ball was placed for Scott. A premature cha.rge on the part of the Welsh- men resulted in "No charge" being sounded, but a little irregularity on the Scotch side did not escape the eyes of Arthur Gould, who im- mediately claimed the advantage, and the Welsh forwards rushing up, took play into the Welsh half, where half-time was called with the score reading:- SCOTLAND—2 minors. Association. NORTH v. SOUTH WALES. INTERNATIONAL SOCKER" TRIAL MATCH. BY "WELSH ATHLETE." With such Rugby football as that which exists in South Wales, the advent of tin -ister code of Association was of necessity made und",r the greatest difficulty and disadvantages. There is nothing so hard as to convince an old Rugby man—player or spectator- that, as compared with his own beloved "rugger" game, the Asso- ciation or dribbling code is worth two straws. Of course, the same thing exactly applies to the "socker" people, who vote, Rugby as all bosh, and, as compared with the Association game, not possessing any science worth "nuts." A diffe- rence of opinion, pure and simple, you see, for each g-ame in its own way possesses any amount of science and interest. To get back nearer the subject in hand-Assooiation football In South Wales—the Cardiff Club may practically be said to liave been the first that took the matter seriously in hand, and mainly to its efforts the game has attained its present degree of popu- larity in Cardiff—if not South Wales. I remem- ber the formation of the club very well; in fact, I was present at the first meeting, held in a coffee tavern in St. Mary-street. There had been a split amongst the old St. Margaret's mem- bers, and the dissenters were, those present at the meeting in question, and were the nucleus of the present Cardiff Club. Then other clubs began to spring up in the district—round the Monmouthshire Valleys chiefly—and Captain Lindsay and Mr. Axtell must, be given credit for the interest in that district. Afterwards came the South Wales and Monmouthshire Asso- ciation, with the indefatigable Mr. Axteil as secretary, after which my friend, Mr. J. Taylor, of Wrexham, secretary of the Welsh Football Association, and as great an enthusiast as ever breathed, was induced to take an interest in South Wales Association football, and mainly by his influence the North extended the helping hand that has resulted in the dribbling game reaching its present height of popularity in this part of the country. This brief review of the game would not be complete if I omitted to mention the sterling services such gentlemen as Mr. Sandiford, Mr. Jones, and Mr. Becker, of Cardiff, have rendered to the game. The trio have worked like niggers to forward its interests, and are, together with other well known enthusiasts, to be congratulated upon the success that has met their efforts. THE GAME. Although arrangements hRd been made to protect the ground from the snow, the heavy fall of this morning rather upset the calculations of the club officials. A number of men at once set to work, and bv three o'cloclr the ground had been rendered pretty playable, The Roath Court end, however, remained half covered with snow to a depth of a couple of inches. With this exception, the turf was in tolerably good condition. The North team fielded as chosen, but in the South Wales team there were several alterations. Callow, of Cardiff, re-placed Timberlake at half, and Brown and Godly took the place of Rhea (Aberystwith) and Sheldon (Barry District). Farthing relieved, and the ball went into touch near the half way. From the throw iu Brown dribbled well up towards the Northem goal, but nothing resulted. The visiting forwards changed the venue of operations, and some exciting, but erratic, pJay ensued near tke centre. Tricky play took place between Brown and Goodly, and the latter dribbled within ten [yards of the goal. Goodby centred to Adamsonj but the latter failed to make use of the chance afforded him, and Lloyd was able to ciear easily. Callow shortly after- wards put in a well-directed shot, but Cafferley had no difficulty in getting the ball away. The attack on the Northern g'oal was continued, and for a few minutes the visitors' back had a. warm time of it Shot after shot was put in, but the smart tactics of Hughes and Lloyd prevented a score. The Northerners then invaded the home territory, and twice ill as many minutes the ball went into bye Vaughan dribbled the ball down the right wing and passed Winter. On centreing, however, Myttos failed to score. The Northern team still pressed, and a corner was conceded. Bownes. cleared, and passing to Beasley the latter placed the visitors 011 the defensive. The ball quickly travelled down agnin, and Parry in shooting for goal sent the ball into bye. After the kick out Brown took the leather up the wing, but before he had time to centre it Hughes was on him, and he 10st his opportunity, For a few miuutes the home team acted on the defen- sive. Twice Vaughan shot for goal, but each time his efforts were unsuccessful. Winter and Brown momen- tarily relieved the pressure, but eventually Kelly received the 1eather, and put in a shot which proved too much for Black, and this scored the first goal. After the kick off the ball was taken up the righ t wing by M'Ewa.u and Beasley, amI the latter sent in a pretty shot. Cafferley, however, kicked out, and a corner was conceded without result. Farthing shortly afterwards took the ball well up into the Northern half and passed to Brown. The latter sent a splendid shot, which Cafferley saved in fine btyle. A visit was then paid to the Southern goal. and although the home backs were rather severely pressed for a few minutef. Bowness, with a long kick, managed to get the ball away. The attack was continued, aud several times the visitors were within an ace of scoring. On one occasion Black was called upon to handle, and in two or three other instances II. score was only saved ø. the splendid defence of Bowlless and Farthing, A difficult shot was sent in by one of the Northern halves, but Black was equal to the emergedcy, 3Jld just in the nick of time passed the ball outcide the posts. After a brief period of give and take play Callord passed to Bea.sley, and the latter dribbled up in fine style. He centred to Cartwright, but the lust-mentioned missed the ball, and a good opportunity was lost. Once more the Northern men assumed the offensive, and Black for a few minutes was severely pressed. Some very tricky play was then witnessed by Vaughan, who defeated both Callow and Bowness. He, however, had not the OlJportnnity to centre, and tLa ball eventually went into bye. The paragraph competition this week has recited in a number of good jokes being sent in. from which I have chosen the sender of the following story, Mr. John Fleming, the Usk-road, Caerleon, as the recipient of the prize. This is his contribution — The following episode occurred during a visit of the Cardiff team to Birmingham to play Moselev. W. E. O. Williams was skipper at the time. The Carcliftian" left Cardiff Friday evening, arriving at Brum at ten o'clock, when they imnwuiately took up their quarters at their hotel (the Grand). After supper about half a dozen of the team went for a, ramble round town (to digest the supper, of course), and coming up New-street about 11.30 (perhaps later, but keep it dark), a great tall fellow, about 6ft. 4-in. from the soles of his boote to his bowler hat, and of proportionate thickness, passed up with a girl about 4ft. lOin. One of the Cardittians said to his pals, "Bliiny, lads, there's a tall chap when immediately a well-known player sung out, "Good night, Gas Pipe." The tall 'un turned round sharply and offered to fight the best man of the six. Things were looking very much like a fight, when the girl collared hold of ''Ga-s Pipe''and said, "Come away, Tiny, it's the likes o' these 'as made Birmingham what it is." Cardiff match on the Cardiff Arms Park last Saturday there wa", observed a inn,11 bhouting out at the top of his voice and jumping from his seat whenever a Cardiff player did something meritorious,, but if a Blackheath man did anything of note he remained quiet. Later on Swieet-Bscott dropped a goal, and the excited spectator jumped with joy, and, swinging his stick in the air, struck another spectator in the mouth with it. "Look what you've done, you scamp.' said the injured one. "You have knocked two of my teeth out." "Never mind," said the excited spectator; "what's a couple teeth to a goal like that 7" A football crowd would undoubtedly pro- vide the philosopher with ample food for thought. Here is a pip of human nature, as gleaned at the Cardiff Arms Park last Saturday — A stoppage occurred in the game through one of the players being injured. "Who is it?" anxiously inquired one indi- vidual. "Oh." answered another, "it's only a Black- heath man I" That seemed to throw a different light on the matter, for the anxious one's faoe brightened. Then the two in unison shouted franticailv :— "Play up, Blackheath Don't kill time WELSH ATHLETE.

CARDIFF AND LLANELLY. NORMAN BIGGS'S EXCLUSION FROM THE WELSH TEAM. "A rumour has reached my ears," writes "Free Lance." in the "South Wales Daily Post," "to the effect that, in consequence of the alleged action of Mr. W. Wilkins, of Llanellv, in influencing the Welsh Rugby Union against the selection of Norman Biggs for the international team, the Cardiff team had cancelled their fixtures with Llanelly next. season." In view of the alleged allegations, a "South Wales Daily Post" representative called upon Mr. Gavin Henry, vice-president of the Welsh Rugby Union. "Is it a fad that the Cardiff committee cancelled their next season's fixtures with Llanelly?" asked our man. "Well, I believe that Mr. Rhys Harvey, the secretary of the Llanelly team, has re- ceived a communication from the Cardiff Club, but I am not in a position to give the exact terms. There is no doubt, however, that the rumour is substantially correct. The matter will be brought before the committer of the Llanelly Club on Monday next. There is no doubt that the first reason assigned by the Cardiff Club was the attitude of Mr. Wilkins towards Norman Biggs, but from what I have heard from a Cardiff source they have' now given a different version to the affair. They now try to justify their action by stating that it is owing to the roug-h and unsportsmanlike conduct of the Llanelly players in both of the Llanelly and Cardiff matches this sea.011." "What course is the Llanelly Committee likely to take?" "No doubt the Llanelly Committee will request the Cardiff CommittBe to re-consider their decision. The fixtures were first arranged and confirmed by both teams. If the Cardiff Committee wishes to cancel the fixtures, they must first consult the Llanelly team." A CHAT WITH SECRETARY ARTHUR. The announcement in Saturday morning's "Western Mail" that the Cardiff team fix- tures with Ll1.nelly for next season had beeu cancelled came with no surprise to those who are behind the scenes, as it was well known that for some time past there had been strained relations between both clubs, a.nd it wa?s only upon the strong appeal made by Mr. W. M. Shepherd at the Cardiff com- mittee meeting that uateti were given for next season. However, a.fter the recent Cardiff aud Llanelly match on the Cardiff Arms Park, strong representations were made to the Car- diff committee by a large number of the mem- bers and also several players, who alleged rough play and foul language on the part of the tin-platers, and it wa.s practically decided that the next season's fixtures should be can- celled, and the secretary (Air. C. S. Arthur) wrote about a fortnight ago intimating this. In a conversation which one of our represen- tatives had with the Cardiff secretary on Saturday morning, he was informed that all fixtures with Llanelly for next seaeon had been abandoned. Being pressed to give the public some reason as to why this extraordi- nary course had been adopted, Mr. Arthur politely informed the pressmen that it was purely a private matter, and one on which he declined to give any further information. Later on a well-known member of the Cardiff Reserves committee was buttonholed. "What do you think of Cardiff cancelling all fixtures with Llanelly for next season?"' was our first query. "Oh, that is very stale news. How could you expect the Cardiff team to play Llaneilv after the rough manner in wnich their players treated our men in both this season's matches? I think the Cardiff Club are to be congratulated upon being so prompt in their action." "What about the attitude of Mr. Wilkins at the recent Welsh Rugby Union meeting to Nor- man Biggs? Is this the cause of the trouble?'' "As far as I know, there is not the slightest truth in the suggestion. Already, I under- stand. BETTER THAN THE BAR. A COMPOSER TELLS OF HIS BIG PROSPECTS. Poor Edward Solomon, the compoeer, who died in London on Tuesday of typhoid, made a large income by his musical compositions. He recently brought an action against a fcrm of builders for interfering with his work as a com- poser by erecting in his absence a scaffolding on the fiat roof of his study, causing the study to be flooded and the scorns of two operas to be destroyed. WHO WANT TO HIDE. MYSTERIOUS DISAPPEARANCE SYNDICATE IN EXISTENCE. A Mysterious Disappearance Syndicate has been discovered to exist in Ascl'.son, in America. Two men who disappeared were members of it. The syndicate provides a place for them to go to. making an exchange with men in some other part of the world who wa-nt to disappear. Shortly after the disappearance of the two Atchison men, it is claimed two strangers, of retired habits, evi- dently not wishing to be known, came here, and have lived here ever since. It is claimed they ware exchanged for the Atchison men.

NOT TRUE. The Galway correspondent of the "Freman's Journal" says:—There is no foundation for the alleged scene at a wake there recently, in which a ma.n was reported to have danced with the corpse as partner.

Reed and the Radicals. A CHAT WITH CARDIFF'S MEMBER. He is Sorry the Letter Announcing his 1m. pending Retirement was Not Given to the Public. Onr own correspondent telegraphs from Paris •—I have just had the pleasure of calling upon Sir Edward Reed, who was immersed in tech- nical work. He stated that it is his desire to definitely retire from the representation of the borough of Cardiff. lie thinks the time is as propitious for his retirement as he can ever expect it to be. He has no intention of seeking a seat elsewhere. He simply concludes that, after having yielded to the wishes of the Liberal party in Cardiff in 1880, and since devoting nearly fifteen years of his life to the representa- tion of that borough, he desires to give a free and closer attention to his scientific and other work. Originally, he accepted the urgent in- vitation to represent Cardiff because it was an important and rising city. He haa only the pleasantest souvenirs of his constituents, but the commercial importance of Cardiff, its muni- cipal and dock extensions, &c., make necessarily greater demands on his time than he feels he can properly afford for the future. Sir Edward regrets thai Mr. Bird did not publish the letter that he addressed to him a month ago explain- ing these facts. Sir Edward hay no idea who may be his successnor. ON THE ROCKS. No meeting of the Liberal Thousand has yet been called to insider Sir E. J. Reed's retire- ment, and. in the meantime, different sections of the Radical party at Cardiff are champion- ing the claims and pressing the merits of their various nominees. When the time comes for selecting a candidate, some lively bickerings and disruptions may be expected. Although the Labour party have not yet made any defi- nite move, they will probably insist upon being consulted and deferentially recognised, and will certainly insist upon the selected candidate being closely in touch and in sympathy with the Labour topics of the day. If the Liberal capitalists decline to sink their own predilec- tions for a man after their own heart, then it is quite within the range of possibility that, in their resentment, the Labour faction will run a representative of their own—Mr. John Jenkins. perAaps, or Mr. Allen Upward, who, we hear it whispered, would not be at all averse to give up his coquetry wnh Merthyr and seek a more important position as the member for Cardiff. Mr. Bird's chances are now con- sidered Inpeless. as his secrecy with reference to Sir E. J. Reed's resignation has not only given umbrage to his friends, but has called forth the disapproval of the hon. gentleman himself. How the Radicals will get out of their entanglement will afford much entertain- ment to impartial onlookers. SOME PLAIN TALKING. Mr. Allen Upward is nothing if not a candid friend. "Certainly I will tell yoj wha.t I think of the position of affairs at Cardiff, consistently with a due regard to the interests of my party," said that gentleman to one of our representatives, who sought an interview with him on Friday. "In the first place, I object to the use of the word 'deputation' in connec- tion with the proposed interview with Sir E. J. Reed in London. The gentlemen who are going to London were deputed by nobody. They represent four Liberal votes in the borough, end no more. The only authority which has any right to ask Sir E. J. Reed to withdraw his resignation is the Liberal Thousand, a body which might be non-exis- tent for all the notice which is taken of it by the gentlemen living in Newport-road. I have no wish to blame their motives, but they have been guilty of a most gra.ve indiscretion, which may lead to serious consequences, as far as the unity of the party is concerned." "I piesume you allude to the secrecy ob- served in connection with the letter?" "There is a good deal of feeling against Mr. Robert Bird and his party. Previous to this Mr. Bird was more favourably looked upon than many of the old leaders^ but by his action in concealing this resignation for so long, and in even now acting on his own authority, with- out consultation with the party, whose mouth- piece he is. he has forfeited the good opinion of many of his best friends. I am disappointed in Mr. Bird, as I hoped that he would have recognised that the time for ignoring the democracy in these matters was past. The Liberals of Cardiff claim to have the same rights as those of the Swansea District, and they will be satisfied with nothing less." "Sir E. J. Reed, in an intervipw with our Paris representative, has expressed his disap- proval of Mr. Bird's secrecy." "I think Sir E. J. Reed shows his good sense in doing so. He shows far more true wisdom than some of his supporters. This is not the time to speak harshly of Sir E. J. Reed, and I will merely say that he rightly decided that he no longer represented the spirit of the Cardiff Liberal party so fully as in former years. After his resignation becom- ing public property it would, of course, be un- wise to the last degree for him to withdraw it. Such a course would only ensure certain defeat, and I cannot understand why anyone fails to see this." Asked as to whether he felt inclined to ac- cept an invitation to become a candidate, Mr. Allen Upward said lie was anxious that they should have a united party, and a candidate to beat Mr. Maclea.n. His own personal pre- judices would not weigh with him in the least, but he was anxious that the Labour ele- ment should have a voice in the selection of a candidate, and unless that element, forming, as it did, the main strength of the party, was considered, they would stand in danger of loting the s eat. In the course of further conversation. Mr. Upward said things were looking black for the Libeml party at present. It would be necessary to secure the election of a new and representative Thousand before the final deci- sion as to the candidate was taken. MR. EBENEZER BEAVAN NOT A CANDIDATE. Although Mr. Beavan did not get home till the small hours of Saturday morning, he was down again at eleven o'clock to see that every- thing was fair and square in reference to the ballot-boxes of the Sunday Closing plebiscite. A reporter present seized the opportunity of drawing Mr. Beavan's attention to the a.n- lIonnceIllent in the papers that he W3g one of the likely Radical candidates for Car liff. The "Pall Mall Gazette" says Jabez Bal- four writes indignantly concerning wliat he deems underhand attempts of the British autho- rities to secure his extradition. It is asserted in his letters that M. Klix declares openly that he has been paid 2,000 dollars to desist from his proceedings. "I can hardly think," says the fugitive, "that this can be true, and that an English functionary would thus tam- per with the cause of justice, but. everyone believes it. and is talking of and wondering at it." He adds :—"I hope you will be able to do something in the English press to call attention to this rumour. and also, after Parliament meets, to get some M.P. to kick up a row about it in the House."

BOILER BURSTS. tfREWERY EMPLOYES KILLED AND OTHERS INJURED. A Central I^ws telegram from Chioago says:—At Mendota, in this State, on Friday a boiler explosion occurred in tihe Handing Company's brewery. The entire building was wrecked, and the employes suffered terribly. Six dead bodies have been taken out of the ruins, and seven severely injured have been removed to the hospital. It is feared that others are buried beneath the wreckage, but a furious storm which is now raging impedes the search.

AN INFANT'S DEATH. A LABOURHR THROWS IT FIlOM THE WINDOW. A labourer, namad Doyle, has been arrested by the Liverpool police ou a charge of havmg committed a fiendish outrage on his child. It is alleged that early on Saturday mcrning he took the infant from bed and deliberately threw it from the bedroom window into the street, death ensuing two hours later.

I Foundered Off Cornwall. A CARDIFF-LADEN STEAMER LOST. Ten of the Crew Go Down with the Vessel Despite the Gallant Efforto of the Lifeboat Men. The steamship Escurial, of Glasgow, 750 tons register, bound from Cardiff to Fiume, with coal, was wrecked close to St Ives Bay on Friday under most painful circumstances, and, as a result, ten of her crew of .nineteen perished. She was owned by Messrs. Raeburn and Verel, of Glasgow, and ouly sailed from CardIff on Wednesday, with a orew of whom only two or three had bcvn in her before. She had not to sea for more than a few hours before heavy weather was encountered, and the vessel began to make water. The pumps, unfor- tunately, became choked, and the water in- creased so rapidly that early on Friday morn- ing, when several miles off St. Agues Head, the stokehole had become so flooded that the fires were put out and she became disabled. Dis- tress signals were fired continually through the night, but it was not until daybreak that the coastguards at Portreath were enabled to distin- guish the vessel, three miles off the port, apparently sinking. The rocket apparatus was got in readiness, and messengers were sent for the lifeboats in the neighbourhood, both St. Ives and Hayle answering to the summons. The latter boat was taken over land and the latter was lamiched, but. itndiiig the wind aud sea too much for her, was compelled to return. At about noon the llayie lifeboat, arrived, and the vessel was theu about half a mile from land, with signal flying. "I am sinking," as was obviously the ease, every sea at this time break- ing over her and carrying away portions of her de-k fr.rirture. While the lifeboat was being launr-heo. two men were seen to jump from the rigging oi the steamer, into which all had gone for refuge. The lifeboat men left their boat, and rushed out into the heavy breakers with lifelines and buoyj. and. gallantly assisted by the coastguards, picked both men up 111 an exhausted and almost lifeless condition. The boat was then launched, but, in getting out, the crew spied a man a bttle distance off, and, throwing a life-line to him, Rot him close to the boat. In endeavouring to hoist him into the boat they were repeatedly caught by huge waves, which forced the unfor- tunate sailor under the boat. and eventually threw the boat helplessly on the beach. Two rocket apparatuses were now in use, and eight rockets were tired, all of which went either inside of the vessel or failed to reach it. Several seamen had. in the meantime, been washed out of the rigging, ur had determined to take their chance in jumping into the sea. and numbers of people were rut-hing into the water OIl all parts of the beach in the hope of picking up some of the poor fellows who were battling with the tre- mei dous seas. The life-saving appliances seemed helpless to render assistance, and within a few minutes the foremast, the topmast, and the mainmast dropped overboard with a crash, carrying with them all the crew left. in the rigging, to the number of seven or eight. None of these poor fellows were saved, and were seen to drown by the hundreds of people who had collected on the beach and cliffs. THE DROWNED. The survivors are so exhausted as to be un- able to give definite particulars as to the whole of the crew, but the drowned include the cap- tain, whose body has since been recovered; Mr. Thompson, first officer, of Cardiff; M r. Nicholl, second officer, originally from Galwav, but for several years residing in Cardiff: Mr. Caldwell. second engineer, of Boiling, near Glasgow the steward, carpenter, donkeyman, messroom lad, and two firemen-mostly foreigners, who joined at Cardiff. THE SAVED. The saved are Mr. Gregg. chief engineer, of Glasgow; David Martin, third engineer, of Dundee; Charles Ivansen, cook, of Cardiff; and John Forst, A. Andersen, Thomas Devan, W. J. A BATTLE ON STILTS COMMON IN THE TOWN OF NAMUR IN BELGIUM. In 1748. wli-?n Marshal Saxe was travelling through the Low Countries, he came to the town of Nainur. in Belgium. Among other things which the citizens did in his honour they got up a battle on stilts. The town was subject to overflows from the rivers on each side of it. and the people, from much use of stilts at such times, had become very expert with them, and often had stilt battles on holidays. The young men formed themselves into opposing armies, with Hags and trumpets to make the si-ene gay. It was against the rule to use a club or weapon of any sort. or to strike with their fists. Punching with their elbows, and kicking with th fir stilts to knock their opi*)- nents' leys from under them, were the methods of assault employed iu these stilt battles. OUR PLEBISCITE. BURGESSES WITHOUT CARDS CALL OR WRITE. Our plebiscite of Cardiff on the Sunday Closing question is now aimost complete, and has resulted in a very high poll. The cards returned show that considerably more than 80 per cent. of the burgesses have recorded their opinions on this vital question. On the arrival of each collector at this office, his box wa.s immediately handed to Mr. Ebenezer Beavan, by whom it was sealed and placed in a room, the door and windows of which were afterwards also locked and sealed by the teetotal champion. The boxes will remain in this room until the temperance party have given a definite decision as to whether or no there shall be a isecona poll. Several bur- gesses have either called or written ccrmplain- ing that they have not had a card, while the collectors also report that when they oalied at some of the houses they found the occupants out, and were thus unable to obtain the cards. In order to make the plebiscite ac complete and as satisfactory as possible, we have de- cided that another opportunity sha.ll be given those who from either of the causes stated al)ove have not had their opinions included in our returns. Any of these persons, therefore, who will either call or communicate with us will be supplied with another card. As every card bears the number of the voter on the burgess roll, a guarantee is given against duplication.

SEVERE SNOWSTORM. TRAFFIC IN CARDIFF STREETS IS STOPPED Snow fell intermittently at Cardiff on Fri- day afternoon, and tn the evening it developed into a very heavy fall, with a keen no: th-east wind and a severe frost. Snow lay U)III the ground several inc-hes deep, and this, w^.h the frost, made locomotion difficult both f .r vehicles and pedes hi ans. Traffic was blocked in many places. The service of trams 011 some of the routes in the town came almost to a deadlock. Trams had to be drawn bv four horses, and at half-past nine trams and 'busses w ere all called in for the night. Reports from other districts in W »ie« also indicated severe weather. A LARGE STEAMER ASHORE. During the thick snowstorm on Friday night the large London steamer Manock. nearly 4,000 tons, went ashore on the beach between HMIS by and Winterton, on the Nor- folk coast. The steamer was bound for the north. Five tugs are in attendance, in the hope of getting her off. The crew have de- clined to leave the ship by means of the rocket apparatus. TRAINS SNOWED UP. The snow-storm in Caithness continues, and has increased in severity. On Friday night there was heavy drifting for several hours, and nothing could be done to relieve the three trains, which are now snowed up on the elevated ground on both sides of the boundary, between Caithness and Sutherland. A second relief train left ick on Saturday morning, but it is not expected that the line will be cleared for a con- siderable time. ^mam

STOPPED IN TIME. POLICE HEAR OF A PRIZE FIGHT BUT GET THERE TOO LATE. The Glasgow police were informed on Fri- day night that a prize fight was going in » hall in Brunswick-street, and a staff of police were immediately despatched to arrest the principals in the figkt. CARDIFF GUARDIANS. A PROPOSAL TO FIND EMPLOY- MENT FOR ABLE PAUPERS. The weekly meeting of the Cardiff Board of Guardians was held on Saturday at the work- house. The Rev. J. R. Buckley, vio-chan- man, presided.-Permission for three dall" leave of absence, and a testimonial in appre- ciation ^)f the great efficiency with which he had discharge his duties, was given to Mr. Greenhalgh (master of the workhouse1 in view- of his probable appointment to the more lucra- tive position of master of the Liverpool Union, lor winch he is an applicant. —The Rev W Sping>on, m pursuance of notice, moved — ihat we memorialise the Local Government liofird 10 issue rules and regulations under \ct 59, txeorge HL. clause 12. aud the Poor-law Acts of 1334 and 18,54, to enable guardians to lien- or lure land for the purpose (a) of employing the poor a.t reasonable wages; and (b) for let- ting land m allotments." In proposing the resolution the rev. gentleman contended that they should not be influenced altogether bv the legal aspect, for, as he reminded them there was- the greater law of humanity and relimon. Lnder the Poor-law they had from year to year afforded relief but had not lifted people up to an independent position. The condition of tilings had become so chronic that a person once a pauper remained so to the end of the chapter. It denied to him that the resolution would provide a way out of the difficulty, and create a proper spirit of independence. The number of inmates in the house last week was 82 in excess of the accommodation. Thev were spending £ 10 000 upon the extension of the workhouse buildings, aud would have to spend another £ 10.000 at the rate it which the town was increasing. He knew it would be difficult to find la.nd in the neigh- bourhood, and they would probably have to go outside a few miles. The scheme he proposed would be economical in saving the cost of vege- mbles suppl.ed to the workhouse and to the Ely Schools. It had been said they had no power tomwe, but he mentioned certain unions that had already adopted some such resolution as he proposed.—Alderman R. A Central Newf telegram from Melbourne says: —A tire broke out lal"t Thursday on board the American ship Savoia, which was discharging kerosine at 1 arra. It was feared that the burning oil might set fire to other ships in the vicinity, and superhuman efforts were made to stifle the flames. Fifty cases of oil were. however, burned, while many other, exnloded. but the exertions of the firemen and sailors then proved successful, and the ship and the bulk of the cargo was saved. The salvage under such conditions is regarded as little short of miraculous.
