m - '!—————. CARDIFF HARBOUR…
m !—————. CARDIFF HARBOUR TRUST. A Special Committee Called to Discuss the Altered Situation. A special meeting of the Cardiff Harbour Trust Committee has been called for Tuesday nod. when the change in the situation eauswl by the receipt of the letter from the Tviff Vale Railway Company will be considered. From conversations, which our representatives have had with beveral members of the cor- poration it is clear that any attempt to place the Tiff Vale Company in re."pee.t of their d.wk property in a- better position than the Bute Docks Company, will be received with strong disapproval. It is useless to minimise the purport of the letter from the Taff Va-.e Company and its consequences as far as the trust scheme is concerned. It is clear that tue TafF Vale Company will not accept the terms of the corporation, and it is certain that the corporation will not alter the basis of agreement to such an extent as to satisfy that company. A gentleman closely connected with the Taff expressed an opinion OIl Thursday that the practical withdrawal of that com- pany from the proposed trust would put an end to the scheme. As we have already c-tated, however, and as appeared from the tenour of the interviews published on Thurs- day, the leading spirits in connection with the scheme 'hold a, very different opinion COUNCILLOR F. J. BEAVAJTS VIEWS. As Mr. F. J. Beavan is one of the strongest opponents of a harbour trust., a. reporter sought- his opinions on. the latest phase of the question. Mr. Beavan thought the with- drawal of the Taff Vale Company practically settled the whole business. "It would be bad enough to have Barry as a competitor," he said, "but to have Penarth as well would make the position of the trust more critical still. I don't think the people of Cardiff will risk their money in a trust which would embrace the Bute Docks- only. And, suppose we acquired all the docks in the port of Cardiff, what would prevent enterprising men. like the promoters of Ban-y constructing another dock to com- pete with us ? You know, many fortunes have been made out of Barry, and the induce- ment to construct another dook and divert the trade from Cardiff would be very great, perhaps too great to be resisted."
'BUSSES TO BE SOLD.
'BUSSES TO BE SOLD. Affairs of the Cardiff General Omnibus Company. • ——. The property of the Cardiff General Omnibus Company (Limited), in liquidation, consisting of 130 horses, twenty omnibuses, liamess, &c., will be sold by anction by Mr. J. E. Gunn on the 22nd and 23rd of October. Whether the service will be continued or whether the 'busses will be removed from the routes over which they now run. will, of course, depend on the pur- chasers. The company originated at the close of the last tramway strike at Cardiff, when the tramway company refused to dismiss the new drivers and conductor^ they had engaged and take back their old ejnployes. It was fathered by the Trades' Council, and has had an unfor- tunate career. It was re-constructed about twelve months ago, and the original share- holders lost every, penny they put in it.

MANSLAIJGHTER CASE. A Swansea Prisoner Now Released from Penal Servitude. Mr. R. D. Burnie has just written to Mr. Viner Leeder, solicitor, Swansea., to the follow- ing effec.t Dear Sir,-I am glad to hear that the Home Secre- ta.cy has ordered the release of Walter Jenkins from penal servitude-upon order of licence.—Yours truly, E. D. Burni-E. The crime for which Walter Jenkins was con- noted and sentenced to fifteen years' penal servitude eight years ago was that of killing his master. Mr. Viner Leeder has persistently p,itat.ed for his release, oa the ground that the punishment had been already sufficient and that the prisoner was the support of his widowed mother. The prisoner was employed as a baker by the deceased man, a Mr. Smith, of Carmar- then-road, and one day, without any motive which has been discovered, he shot him dead .with a revolver, and then turned the weapon upon himself, inflicting grievous injury, from which he suffered for some weeks.

SOUTH WALES ART SOCIETY. Lord Tredegar to Open the Winter Exhibition To-morrow. We are pleased to be able to state that all arrangeinents for the holding of the annual exhibition by the South Wales Art Society at the Queen-street Hall, Cardiff, on Saturday next have been satisfactorily concluded. The exhibits, numbering over 300, have been hung, and the liall has been specially fitted up with lights surrounded by prisms and i-eflectors. These lights, which have never been introduced before in England, are the same as those used in the Berlin Art Gallery, and have been sup- plied by Messrs. Fowler and Lancaster, of Birmingham. The hall will be lighted with electricity, the corporation having granted per- mission for their mains to be used, and the Marquess of Bute has kindly sanctioned the supplying of the electricity from the generator at the Castle. Thus the society has been fortu- nate in securing these aids to a most successful exhibition, which will include the following celebrated pictures:—"Holy Night' (lent by Lord Bute)* by Carl Muller; portrait of Archibald Forhos, by Professor Iferkorner; Oil the Wye," by W. H. B. Davies: and L. Falero's great picture, He Loves Me, lie Loves Me Not." The opening of the exhibition will be performed at. 2.30 p.m. on Saturday by Lord Tredegar, and, no doubt, many of his lordship's, friends and admirers will be there to offer him a welcome.

WELSH RUGBY UNION. Fitzgerald's Application for a Transfer Adjourned. A meeting of the Welsh Rugby Football Union wits held on Thursday night at the Queen's Hotel, Cardiff. As usual, the meeting was closed to members of the press, but, from an official report supplied by Mr. W. H. G-wynn, the secretary to the Union, we understand that D. Fitzgerald's application for a transfer from Cardiff to Leigh was adjourned until the next meeting of the Union, when Fitzgerald is requested to attend in person. In the mean- time the committee resolved that Fitzgerald should be debarred from playing for any Welsh or English club pending a satisfactory explana- tion on his part. The committee also lesolved that the secretary should communicate with Mr. G. LADIES ON ARCTIC EXPEDITIONS. M Astrup. the Norwegian explorer, who accompanied Lieutenant Peary on his recent Arctic exjedition, has written a letter to the "Morsfenbladet," in which he pictures the arrangements made for the voyage as being of a most inadequate and unsatisfactory character. In the spring the relations 1w- tween the memljers of the expedition were far from being of a. cordial character, and provi- sions were scanty, which eaused great dis- satisfaction amen,<s all. M. Astrup says emphatically "the ladies had an extremely bad influence on the good relations and co-opera- tion among the expedition."

IELECTRIC LIGHT.
I ELECTRIC LIGHT. Preparations at Cardiff are Now Nearly Complete. The preparations for the lighting of Cardiff are being vigorously pushed forward, and the lamp testing has proved quite satisfactory, the light produced being of excellent quality. Upon visiting the electric lighting station on Canton Common on Thursday, one of our representa- tives was informed that the ponderous machinery had been set going frequently during the last week with most satisfactorily results, no weak- ness or flaw in the bearings being discovered. All that now remains to be done is the fixing of the street lamps and some minor jobs, which ought to be completed in the course of a few days.
TRADE Of CARDIFF.
TRADE Of CARDIFF. An Enormous Increase Shown in the Coal Shipments. The coal shipments, including bunkers, in the Customs port of Cardiff for the nine months ended September 30 last amounted to 11,425,000 tons, compared with 9.532.000 tons in the same period of 1893, and showing the enormous m- crea.se of 1,893,000 tons. The increase alone would be considered a respectable trad 3 in many ports. The last quarter of i.893 was a lieat-N one, but, provided there is no disruption of trade bv strikes, &c., the quantity then shipped is likely to be exceeded net-ween the 1st of October and the 31st of December this year by about 150,000 tons. Should this estimate I prove correct, the export of coil and coke from Cardiff this year will exceed that of 1893 by over 2,000,000 tons, while the sii;T>m»Jut-s of lb92 —the highest year on record—will be beaten by about 1,500,000 tons. mmmmmm*mmm

A Night on a Funnel.
A Night on a Funnel. TERRIBLE EXPERIENCE AT SEA. Passenger en a Wrecked. Union Lint. Steamer Tells a Thrilling Story. A correspondent forwards to the "Daily Graphic" an account of a harrowing expe- rience which befel himself-and others last montl at the Chinde, mouth of the Zambesi. He was on board the steamship Union, belonging to the Union Line, which carried a party whose object was to survey a new channel across the bar. Unfortunately, the Union ran aground, and, in doing so, bumped upon one of the anchors of a buoy, which knocked a. fair-sized hole in the ship's bottom. Not- withstanding every effort to save her, she rapidly settled down and sank in about ten feet of water. The corre- spondent continues :—"Captain Carr and I J made a bolt for the top of the funnel. I was nearly carried away tbv the first breaker- that cairn on board after she sank, but managed just in time to get on to .the grating on top of the boiler and grasp the exhaust steam pipe. Just as I did so my legs were carried out on a level with my head, like the tail of a horse in a strong wind. The breaker, passing me, rushed aft and swept the rest of the people, with the exception of four black boys, into the sea, and the order was sauve qui peut. On my following Captain Carr to the ton of the funnel, Captain Borthwick, who had managed to cling to a ventilator, took mv position at the exhaust steam pipe, where he was partially (sheltered by the funnel. Eventually, he and the black boys had to come up to the top of the funnel on account of the tide rising, and there we sat in the most miserable plight that ever fell to the lot of man. This was at two o'clock. All that afternoon we anxiously scanned the entrance to the river, some two and a half i miles distant, for signs of help. We saw a boat come partly out of the river, but it had to go back, being unable to stem the tide. A dhow that was anchored outside the bar then seemed to be our last chance for life. She had hoisted her sail and was making for the fair-way, in order to cross the bar at or near high water. To our joy we saw that she was going to pass within two hundred yards of us, and we knew we could hail her, and we thought she must come to anchor astern of us. We never for an instant dreamed that human beinfs, either white or black, could leave us in the perilous position in which we were placed and not lift, a hand to save us. But this is exactly w nat was done. They came sailing up to us, and when within reach we bailed them. and implored them to help us; but the- merely hoisted their colours in > response ard sailed off toward; the entrance to the river, leaving us to our fate. "It was now -about five o'clock, and-hope, of any rescue was nearly extinct. The sun set and night came on, and such a night aÆt: it was neither of us three white men will, I k think, ever forgeit. Towards ten p.m. they tide had ebbed- sufficiently to give us a short respite, and we managed to crawl down on to the remains of the bridge. There we lay down, shivering, until about half-past twelve. Wg then got up and mar-aged to string two linet across the top of the funnel, and made theitf fast on eitiher side in such a way as, to maki, 1' two loope that hung down into the top of the funnel about two feet. This gave us j somewhat of a rest for our feet while sitting J uoon the funnel top. Captain Carr and my- self were stark naked, with the exception of a thin singlet apiece, and we were simply perished with cold. Notwithstanding this, and the waves which broke over the top of us, we managed to hold on. and even so far forgot our position as to frequently drop off to sleep, although nudging each other from time to time in order to keep awake. Towards daylight, the funnel, with oil the extra- weight that was atop of it, became very shaky, and I was momentarily in fear lest it should tro, and precipitate us into the boiling surf, which was raging all round us. But, happily, this did not occur, and, to our unspeakable joy, daylighft broke once more. "It is needless to say that, from the first streaks of dawn, we were all straining our eyes in the direction of the river to catch the fir,i glimpse of the help which we were now sure would be sent to us from Cliimde. And sure enough, just a little after six a.m.. we caught sight of a small steamer making her way slowly out towards us. They came a«s cl0"'e as they dare and hove a life-buoy at- tached to a line into the water, and we then, one after another, jumped into the water, caught the life-buoy, and were hauled on board, three white men and four black boys all told. To our greait relief, when on, board we learned that all the others who were washed from the wTeck the day before had been picked up that same evening, having, floated right up the river on wreckage and. «. debris, opposite the town of Chinde. We also! learned that the English Vice-Consul of3, Chinde, Mr. RaJph Belcher, had been to tu f Portuguese authorities early in the afternoon. to get them to send out one of their own. gunboats (which are t.he counterpart of our own on Lake Nyassa). They had. after demur, promised him that one should go out as soon as there was water enough, to allow her to fioatt. which would have been at four o'clock in the afternoon, in ample time to have taken us off the wreck. Instead* of this they did not leave until half-past five, and j then only went- across the river and came back > again. Meanwhile Dr. Deane, of H.M.S. j Mosquito, had sent one lifeboat, which wao- i the boat that we saw, bwt which, as I hav» | said before, had failed to stem the tide. On 1 t'ne return of this boat lie chartered tfhe srnalf | steamer whioh came out for us next morning, although, eyetn. to obtain this, he had to make 'I the threat of taking off an armed crew, as i the man in charge of her did not wish to let her go. All's well that ends well, but such, another experience on the top of a funnel I think neither of us would like to go through acaan."
