Friend,—Studying a copy of the paper familiar to me since I served the late beloved Dr. Leahy in the then extensive Tondu and Ogmore industries, in 1869 and 1872, as I had occasion to be in the town, so many things in it seemed to call for comment that I am uneasy to let all of them pass. the perusal of even the fugitive news sheet may teach much if it be studied, i.e., not read in mere curiosity, when what is unsaid and lies "between the lines" is seen. For it is this which profits us, and it must be supplied by the reader, so that in the sphere of education even, in the great world, it is true that we bring what we take away. It is the capacity of supplying this which constitutes the wise reader, and no other is fit to read public things, for there lies a secret in all news which is a riddle the reader is set—and he who solves it as he reads profits by it and is the wiser, and he alone. I.-A new light was thrown on the state of the Church by the remarkable evidence that the theatre was taking up its work, and a great actor becoming a kind of Apostle by his peculiar mode. We have seen very much of distinct societies existing, with their funds and mechanisms, to do between them the many works and various of Christian effort and care for each different olass of sufferers, each one founded to oppose some one special evil-which also has just been noted in a cartoon. This sad proof of the laxity of the Christian Church—in that the different por- huns of its work around to be done must be undertaken by specific extraneous agencies, labour, agitation, and funds-receiveR confir- mation when we now find the theatre boldly undertaking to preach the truth! Well may'st thou, in thy editorial on the ministers' circu- lar m to houses, say that, if the Church had a touch of the oourage (we will not say virtue, though the words are really identical) as the soldier, it would transform society. This seems fiptly observed when the Vicar of Cardiff is reported as actively welcoming old soldiers-whero a third element adds to the variety, viz., that of the game of which so many in the tuwn seem so proud. By those ironical strokes so common, B. Tree offers, on the drama "Temptation," which was associated with a tree at first, claiming that a Tree now rather tends to help man out of the snare of the first, or setting forth an antithesis. II. -The case is mentioned, also, of grave consequences from a racing telegram (which should not be I)ronouncel "telegram"), of which it may be useful to draw the morals. This serious effect was due (1) to using "slang" —the words "dead certainty"; (2) to tele- graphing about racing at all. The first was needless, like the second, and it is, I submit, a question whether the privileges of telegraphic messages—entailing great care, expedition, and labour-were made or should be used for un- necessary things, of merest luxury or whim, or whether this is not an abuse of a means provided to give us news at once of the most important concerns (not the least), just ;t.- I hold it is of the valuable postal letter system to use it to cart sacks of worthless valentine pictures about. The tendency is to lead to less care being taken in delivery, whereby true things suffer, and, any way, they are imperilled and delayed. (3) It is, evidently, most unwise ever to use the word dead in a telegram unless from necessity. These remarks receive confirmation by con- temporaneous news of the death of a station- master owing to a bet—how needless !—after service of a quarter of a century! III.—I will only advert to one other matter —again in the editorial of the issue referred to—"Woman and Her Rights." Commenting on the last of Victoria W. Martin's journals (whom I personally know), the article shows how wisely she allows the statement that woman is evidently best in her proper place. This, which might seem a truism, is actually loudly denied. But I rejoiced to see the view put forth at length which earnestly cries for utterance that she can never be a man, and had best not try to be-that she cannot, there- fore, holle to fulfil his part with honour—that it is rebellion against God and nature and her husband, and hence an anomaly and a thing which cannot be blffised-and that she is far nobler her true self than a kind of revolted woman, unhappy, and no longer dis- playing those characters which have ever been her charm and her power. She has such, as well as man, and, though different from his, they are as valuable and needful in their place. When true to them, or excelling as woman, she has power and blessedness enough, nor cadi she be better by possibility. But when she is out of her place man is, too, and society will lose it's most precious ties and lovely traits. This sad deterioration social has now reached a high pass in America, leading to abnormal women, less respect to the sex (for consideration is paid them as the weaker vessel," and must be resigned when equality is claimed), and the grievous loss of that true female character, which none should wish, any more than the true female form, to try to alter—if it be not, rather, injurious so to do. Such a loss is too serious to be allowed, and if suffered it will be the ruin. and not. the saving, either of the sex or of the world. But what is wanted is that they be true women, as once (as it is that children be children again), for the true evil we, and they, too, suffer from is that they I are not.-I am, faithfully, C.FOX. 6th of 11th Month, 1893.
CRIMEAN VETERANS.
CRIMEAN VETERANS. Canon Thompson Speaks for the Banquet Committee. TO THE EDITOR. Sir,—The committee charged with the taek of making arrangements for the above oeie- bration desire, through your courtesy, to enlist the sympathy and help of all friends of our veteran soldiers in carrying the scheme proposed to a happy and successful issue. 1. As to our invited guests, the total number up to the present who have cordially responded to our invitation is about 260, with a daily addition of one or two names, which will probably bring up the total number to 300. Of these the larger proportion are without pensions, and the pensioners among them in very few instances are in receipt of more than 9d. a day. Of the total number, quite a third are in indigent circumstances, or actual want. and many will come to us from the workhouses of the district covered by our operations. 2. As to our objects, we want, first of all, tc gather these gallant fellows round a. well- spread hospitable board, in token that, though many of them are humble, poor. and obscure, their services are cherished in grateful remem- brance, and they themselves not forgotten. But we wish to do more than this. There must be many among these deserving men whose health is of the feeblest, and whose constitutions were permanently injured by the hardships of their Russian or Indian cam- paigns. To such as these how welcome would be a small addition to their pension, or to such other means as they possess! But the method of dispensing such funds as may be entrusted to us will be a subject for after consideration, and may well be left in the hands of a selected number of well-known men chosen from our larger committee. Havinsr these objects before UH. I very earnestly and urgently appeal to all who may chance to read these words to send us some practical token of their sympathy. As yet we have received but scanty support from places beyond the Cardiff and Glamorgan district. But Monmouthshire will send us a contingent of between 40 and 50 veterans. and Pembrokeshire 21, while seven are invited from Carmarthenshire. Surely we may hope for something from residents in these counties, seeing that we seek to benefit their people priiinlly with our own. Our local football clubs are. with most^praiseworthy celerity, well to the fore, as your columns have already shown. This is well: but what we want and must have, if the scheme is to be attended with the success we long for, is a substantial and representative subscription list. I will only add as pertinent to this la-st remark that the mayor-elect (Councillor Trounce) is treasurer, and will be glad to receive subscrip- tions without delay.-I lun. &c C. J. THOMPSON. Welsh Church Training College.
Welsh Church Training College. An urgent anpeal from the Bishons of Banjror and St. Asaph is being issued on behe.If of the proposed new diocesan Church training college for the instruction of element-arv teachers. Lord Penrhyn has priven a. site at Bangor, and there has been promised about £ 7,500, while the Society for the Promotion of Christian Know- ledge will grant JB1.000. provided the sum of £10,000, necessary for the building, is raised. This leaves a deficit of £1.500, and, as every available source in the two dioceses has been exhausted, friends in England are being applied to in order to save the institution. The prelates a.dd Our anxiety is great, for if this sum cannot be raised our Church teachers must either attend a Nonconformist college—and so the Church character of onr schools would in consequence suffer most seriously—or else the majority of our Church schools must close, seeing they depend unon the college for their supr' of teachers."
Ge^rous Lord Bute.
Ge^rous Lord Bute. HE GIVES ANOTHER FIVE HUN- DRED POUNDS So that Friendly Societies may not Suffer through the Cardiff Savings' Bank Smash. [FROM OUR SPECIAL CORRESPONDENT.] LONDON, WEDNESDAY. I have authority for stating that the Marqness of Bute has signified his intention of increasing his already large donation of £2,788 8s. lid. to. £3,311 5s. 9d., in order that the clubs and Friendly Societies who deposited their funds in the late Cardiff Savings' Bank shall not suffer in auy way by its failure. Since his lordship agreed to pay the first amount, other claims have been brought under the notice of the authorities which increased the total of the societies' claims by over £500. On this fact being brought before the notice of the marquess, he readily consented to include this amount with the first-mentioned sum. How nobly he has redeemed the half-veiled promises made for him by counsel ta Mr. Justice Stirling, when his ease came before that gentleman some time ago the public will at once see. Another development in the winding-up process is also to be recorded, and this a serious one, as it affects claims amounting to £4,300. This week was the time fixed for adjudicating on the claims of the irregular depositors. On the matter coming before the chief clerk of the High Court he promptly decided that all interest claimed on deposits of over £200 must be disallowed. This important decision reduces the amount on which a dividend will ultimately be paid from £22,500 to £18,200. These irregular depositors, therefore, of over £200 who accepted the offer of the trustees in the first place and took 17s. in the £ in settle- ment of their claims, can now shrug their shoulders with satisfaction, as it will be seen that they have received much more than they ever would have done had they waited until the final winding up. The authorities are now only waiting for the chief clerk's certificate, which will contain accu- rately the indebtedness of the bank to the deposi- tors. Irregular depositors who have only received 17s. in the .6, and whose claims have not been wiped out by the chief clerk's decision, will be placed on the same footing as the regular de- positors, after which the final dividends will be paid. The funds in hand a.t the present moment will enable the solicitors to the Treasury to authorise a dividend of 2s. 6d. in the £ when negotiations with the trustees of the bank, which are now proceeding, are completed. It is confidently anticipated by the authorities that they will be able to pay a dividend of at least 5s. in the .6. The postage to defray the distri- bution of this dividend, it is interesting to note, will amount to £500. Statement by Mr. William Jones. Mr. William Jones, solicitor for the deposi- torti, informs us that this matter came before the chief clerk a.t the chambers of Mr. Justice Stirling, in the Royal Court of Justice, Lon- don, on Tuesday last, for the purpose of further adjudicating upon the olaims of the irregular depositors, who have recently had notices sent to them by Mr. Emeet Cooper, the liquidator, stating that their claims, as originally filed on their behalf, have, in accordance with Mr. Justice Stirling's direc- tions, heen disallowed altogether, on the following grounds, viz.:—"That the amount of interest added to the depositor's account after it had become irregular (through the depositor having exceeded the limits of deposit allowed by the rules of the bank) was greater than the amount of the depositor's claim." Or that their claims, as originally filed, have been reduced to the amounts allowed and mentioned in the notices, on the following grounds, viz.: — For amount claimed by the depositor in excess of the amount appearing to be due to the depositor by the books of the bank, and for interest added to the deposi- tor's account after it had become irregular through the depositor having exceeded the limits of deposut allowed by the rules of the bank." Mr. William Jones's London agents attended the hearing before the chief clerk at the judge's chambers on Tuesday. A large number of the depositors' (irregular) claims were disallowed altogether, and the other section of the irregular depositors' claims were allowed at reduced amounts, stated in their notices, for the reasons stated above. The adjudication of claims on Tuesday only affected irregular depositors' claims. All the regular depositors' claims have been allowed and passed at the amounts appearing to their credit in the books of the bank; therefore, no notices were sent to regular classed depositors. All the irregular claims as adjudicated upon have now been referred to the judge's clerk for the usual certificate to be prepared, and this will be dons at once, preparatory to the distribution of the assets, which, it is anticipated, will take place before the end of the year. The dividend will probably be about 5s. in the £ all the amount of the claims, as allowed. Mrs. Hurford's claim has been allowed at j6228 18s. 6d., and those of the Misses Plain at the amounts appear- ing by their books to their credit. These depositors have not received the 17s. in the j6, and the question will shortly be argued before the judge as to whether these depositors shall be paid the 17s. in the £ in priority out of the assets before the dividend is declared. Counsel will be instructed by Mr. William Jones to contest the claims of Mrs. Hurford and the Misses Plain to be paid in priority out of the assets. When this point has been decided there will be nothing further to pre- vent the liquidator distributing the assets at his disposal. At the hearing on Tuesday ono of the creditors, a Mrs. Masey, appeared by solicitor. She had received 17s. in the £ from the managers, and on her behalf the quest-ion was raised whether interest upon deposits ought not to be apportioned—i.e., interest upon such part of the deposit as was within the limit should be allowed, notwith- standing there was, in fact, a deposit of a larger amount, meaning that, although the total amount allowed by the rules had been exceeded, and, therefore, no interest would be payable, yet the depositor was entitled to say her deposit was within the amount sanc- tioned by the rules, and so claim interest upon the amount limited by the rules. The Chief Clerk decided against this contention on behalf of Mrs. Masey's claim, and Mr. William Jones doubts very much whether the depositor will take the matter to the judge, although she has liberty to do so.
ST. MARY'S CHURCH.
ST. MARY'S CHURCH. Cardiff's New Mayor will be Present at the Jubilee Services. Mr. Fred J. Veall, hon. secretary of St. Mary's Jubilee Celebration Committee, writes from 6, Arcade-chambers, High-street -.— SIR,—May I trespass on your courtesy and ask for space on behalf of the vicar and church- wardens and the jubilee celebration committee to invite the different public bodies and the inhabi- tants of Cardiff generally to join in the proces- sion and attend service at St. Mary's Church. Cardiff, on Sunday next, the 12th inst., at 3.30 o'clock in the afternoon. This year is being kept as the jubilee year of the new St. Mary's Church, which re-places the ancient Parish Church destroyed in the great storm of 1607. Up to the present the several festivals have been kept parochially, but as Sunday, November 12, falls within the octave of the dedication festival it has been decided to make this an occasion in which the different Friendly Societies, clubs, and other public bodies shall be invited to participate. The incoming mayor (Councillor Trounce) has kindly consented to attend in state, with as many members of the corporation as may find it convenient to accompany him. It is hoped to organise a procession on similar lines t. that which took place at the opening of the church on DeoemVer 14, 1843. Time is so short that I have not been able to approach all the secre- taries of different societies separately, but I shall be very pleased to hoar from any officials of clubs and Friendly Societies who would like to take part. All will be most heartily welcomed, and seats found in the church for those who join the procession. All will assemble at the Town-hall a.bout 2.30 p.m. on Sunday. Full particulars will be advertised on Friday an*' Saturday next

Sir Theodore and Lady Martin are staying at the Knowle Hotel, Sidmouth, where they have gone for change after serious illness at their residence in the Vale of Llangollen. In ineffaceable letters on the glass folding- doors of an hotel at Aberdare Junction is the following motto: —" Fy ngobaith sydd yn Nuw," which in English means, "My hope is in God." Mr. Gilbert Davidson, of Ammanford, seoured the second prize and silver medal for the best table of made-up bouquets, wreaths, and crosses at the chrysanthemum show at the Royal Aquarium, London. The many thousands who have admired the Mtuielaus collection of paintings at the Cardiff Free Library may like to know that Menelaus is Mr. Charles Wilkins's noteworthy Welsh- man in this week's "Weekly Mail." A Northern paper says that a highly suc- cessful leek show was held at Winlaton on Tuesday. A leek show out of Wales! Surely this is not in keeping with the eternal, ex- ternal, and internal fitness of things? Well done, N Neath! The collection made there, under the management of Miss Bevan, for Swansea Hospital amounted to £94, and no doubt it will be made up to £100. This, by comparison, puts Swansea in the shade. Our little statement that the Queen is pre- bendary of St. David's has astonished Mr. Labouchere. The editor of Truth may be further astonished to learn that her Majesty is colonel of a regiment. The rev. colonel never officiates, however. The Swansea Town Council this year will nor have a teetotal mayor. Is this the reason, we wonder, that a proposal is on foot to go back to the old hours of meeting—morning insttad of afternoon ? It looks very sus- picious Those luncheons were certainly very pleasant! A marriage has been arranged, and will take place early in January, between Edward Charles Macnaghten, eldest son of Lord Mac- naghten, and Edith Minnie, only daughter of the late Mr. Thomas Powell, of Coldra., Mon- mouthshire, and niece of Mrs. Vaughan-Davies, of 17, Hyde Park-gardens. The Rev. Hugh Price Hughes, when on his way to Lowestoft on Tuesday, was suddenly seized with illness and compelled to leave the train a.t Chelmsford. After waiting a short time he found himself unable to fulfil an engagement at Lowestoft in connection with the London Wesleyan Mission, and returned to London in the course of the day. In Jewish weddings it is the custom to plaeo the ring on the first finger of the left hand, but, not to be singular, the wearer afterwards removal it to the third finger. As a rule, the ring never goes further than the first joint of the first finger, for it is bought to fit the Christian third finger, and not the Jewish forefinger. This fashion doth make slave; of even the doughtiest. At a board of guardians up the hills" lately the relieving offioer was asked about a pauper. "He's dead," was the reply. "Oh," said a worthy vicar, who hadn't caught the answer, "What rent does he pay?" "Well," exclaimed the first guardian, "you ought to know best," whereupon an irresponsible called out, "Which place is he in?" It was then the vicar saw he had put his foot in it. There may be seen in a farmhouse near Llandovery a writing-desk, which is said to have belonged to William Nicoll, the com- panion of Bums, and immortalised in the song, "Willie brewed a peck of maut." It was bought at the sale of Mrs. JSTic*ll, Torr Cottage, Kirkcudbrightshire, whose maiden name was Cairns. It is said that some of the Cairns family settled on the Glamorgan- shire Coast. The first Anglesey Hunt Ball on Tuesday night started a week of gaiety, for which the houses in the neighbourhood of Beaumaris have filled up wonderfully. That noted Nimrod, Lord Kenyon, is the comptroller this year, and has promised to bring a party of young men. Under him is Mr. Claud Vivian, who will really be responsible for the arrange- ments, and the ball was under the "patronage" of the Stanhope Joneses. The second ball is fixed for to-day. Wednesday was occupied with the ladies' ordinary, and to-day, in addi- tion to the ball, there will be the annual pro- cession, which promises to be more nume- rously attended than usual. Madame Patti received a neat and rather unique present a short while ago. It was a manuscript music book, in which were a number of her favourite songs, written with wonderful neatness by If a lover of song and music." He is Mr. Adam Thomson, Castle- Douglas, N.B., an old gentleman in his eighty- sixth year. Mr. Thomson takes great delight in this pastime, and, though so well up in years, his penmanship is remarkable, and much prized by those who may receive a sample. The book was taken to Craig-y-Nos by Mr. John J. Clark, Dalbeattie, while on a cycling tour through Wales. Madame Patti is from home, but she has acknowledged the gift by letter. It is really singular how the Welsh members insist that the Liberal party is pledged to pass Welsh disestablishment "fir9t after Home Rule." Mr. Herbert Lewis has been repeating the same stale old story, and others will, doubtless, follow suit. The only slight foun- dation for the figment is that at a certain Newcastle Liberal Conference some years ago a couple of fervid Welsh orators were wle- rated while they spoke to a. few Welsh lis- teners of their nation's wrong! and aspirations. The- conference paused unwillingly, and, having good-humouredly allowed the Welshmen to have a harmless fling, the business of the meeting proceeded. But the conference took no more interest ih Welsh disestablishment than the Cardiff Council takes in progress. Mr. David Bowen, the veteran choir leader, who conducted the proceedings at the Crumlin Eisteddfod, has a geography of his own, and this is a sample of it, as given by himself: — This- is the order of competition—Llwyn- hendy. in Carnarvonshire; Caerphilly, in Monmouthshire; Abercarn, in Staffordshire; Mynvddielwyn, in Ireland; and Aberaman, in Sootland." What place in Oireland did ye say, Mr. Boan ?" asked a Dowlais Irishman, who was present. Mynyddislwyn, sir," quickly answered Mr. Bowen. "And how d've spell it, shure?" was the next question. Mr. Bowen spelled it, raising the pitch a full third with every succeeding "y." Jasus, man," said the Irishman, who had listened attentively to the seemingly endless succession of letters. Jasus, man, an' it must be the divil's own big place, wid such a foine name as that. Be me sowl, I'll be afther lookin' for the bhoys from that place, so's to know how things are gitting along in the ould counthry." As he was seen creeping home late at night, we presume he met some of the bhoys of Mynyddislwyn. THE FALLING OF THE LEAVES. Flying far, and whirling near, Down they fall in different ways, Soon for e'er to disappear, Like the dreams of other days. They are falling, gently falling, O'er our last long resting-place.
