--What Women Will Wear.
What Women Will Wear. "GWEN" CHATS ABOUT THE COMING FASHIONS. Something About a Handsome Gown, a Novel Umbrella, and the Latest in Hair Dressing. A HANDSOME GOWN. The Empress of Russia wears a handsome gown, which has juts been manufactured for her in Lyons. A beautiful pattern of blue, purple, and yellow irises is woven in the silk fabric to form the trimming round the foot of the skirt. The dress itself is nf black gros-grain, with pattern to match for the bad ice and sleeves. A NOVEL UMBRELLA. The cover of a new umbrella is of rich morocco that is made to correspond with whatever tone the handle may possess, an'l at its base is a duplicate ferule that slip" over the one on the umbrella, thus pie- venting the promenader from meeting with that common accident of dragging off the end of his umbrella when the ordinary cover is in use. At the side close to the handle are several little metal fastenings that re- semble the patent buttons on men's gloves, and which snap into place with a precision that leaves no occasion for the sundry un- complimentary remarks that one gives vent to when the button flies off the silk strap on an umbrella cover just when the final touch was to be given. With this cover on the effect is that of a graceful walking- stick. LATEST IN HAIR-DRESSING. In Paris they are wearing their hair in a new fashion. It is shown in my illustra- tion, and is only meant for evening costume. Or the hair may be waved and drawn up high on the head, where it is arranged in a succession of puffs, At the left side a portion of the hair is twisted into the new Leutheric knot. A coil of ribbon to match the costume encircles the puffs, and when it reaches the knot, is arranged in standing loops. The hair is brushed back from the forehead in Pompudour style, with just a. suggestion of a neat curled fringe. A few pretty women in Paris are dressing their hair in true Victorian style, parted in the middle, the hair waved and drawn down on either side so ns to cover the ears. The Pall Mall Gazette thinks a pretty woman looks pretty no doubt with Iter hair thus arranged, but even when admiring her it is impossible to avoid reflecting how very much pi tit-tier she would appear if her dainty ears were visible and little curling tendrils waved upon her forehead. It will take some time. we fancy, to abolish the fringe, which has come in' for so much abuse, and, at the same time, is so firmly established in the affections of the youth of to-day. A fringe- like charity-covers a multitude of I failings, softens hard outlines, shadows colourless eyes, and forms the connecting link between a hard-brimmed hat and the forehead. Everyone without a. fringe has experienced the difficulty of choosing a hat or bonnet to suit her. The richest velvet, the downiest feathers alike fail to impart that becoming softuess which a. few ruffed curls bestow. THE "PIERRETTE" SLEEVE. Quite the newest style of sleeve for dressy occasions is the "Pierrette." It is, of ')CC, course, only suitable for thin materials. The lower part of the sleeve in my illustration consists of six frills of spotted chiffon, edged with very narrow ribbon; the upper part is formed of one large puff, which is knotted on the shoulder. WASTE-PAPER BASKET. The border is worked on common canvas with tapestry wool in flat stitch after the block pattern. It can also be traced first to make the work easier. The stitches are graduated in length from fourteen to two threads, every two being bordered bv a small stitch of the same colour, the very long flat stitches by such a one divided into single parts. Each block answers to two stitches in the width co d not be given un the block JmtteaL—The basket itself i1- of thick coming beside each other the stitches made paste-board, the shape of a tube, with a wooden bottom, 16iin, Itigh and 28jin. wide. ornamented with two worked stripes 21iin. long. They were fastened on as seen, and completed on one side by a Uripe of greyish blue frieze, and on the e'lier Iiy a stripe of the same material in ter:a "cttt. Darker rolls of plush liin. wedi hide the joins and give also the edge below. A thick cane hoop is put round the top of the basket, and trimmed with a ruche of terra-cotta cloth tijin. wide, piuked out at both edges.
--.------'----:Says He is…
Says He is too Old. A CARDIFF MINISTER ASKED TO RESIGN. Pearl-Street Baptist Want Money and a Young and Energetic Minister. There is dissension at Pearl-street English B.ptist Chapel, Cardiff. The chapel and si-hi: jl were erected about twelve months ago, at a cost of JB2,450, and, as the congregation has been small, the weekly expenses are greater than the collections. About £1 a week, it is stated, is being added to the debt, and a heavy mortgage exist* in connection with the building fund. A section of the congregation are of opinion that the Rev. E. Schaffer is too old to draw large congrega- tions, and they think the panacea for the present difficulties would be the appointment of a younger and more energetic minister. Mr. Schaffer, however, refuses to quit, and this is the whole case in a nutshell. I A Deacon Interviewed. Mr. Frederick Dash, one of the deacons of the chapel, who is taking a prominent part in agitating for the appointment of a younger minister, was seen by a Wes- tern Mail" reporter on Thursday, and, in answer to some questions put to him, said: — "We have laid the case before the Baptist Association, and tliey ha.ve promised to take the building over on condition that Mr. Schaffer, the present pastor, resigns his pastorate." "And Mr. Schaffer won't?" No; he is somewhat stubborn, and will not stand aside. I asked him a fortnight ago to resign, but he said he would rather be thru-ft out than go out voluntarily." "What reason does he give for his 'stub- He says the association has treated him rather coolly. Mr. Schaffer does not draw a. congregation large enough to fill the place, and we feel that a younger man as pastor would be, able to increase the congregation, and so improve the finances of the Church." Do you propose to cast Mr. Schaffer adrift without any provision?" "Oh, no; we should be sorry to turn him out in the street, and the association has promised to get him employment of some kind by which lie would be financially better off than as pastor of the Church. We should not take the course contemplated unless oircum- stances compelled us to do so." The Pastor's Case. Subsequently, our representative waited upon tlki, Iu?v. E. Schaffer at Harold-street, Roath, and asked him for his version of the affair. "It is quite true," said Mr. Schaffer, "that the Baptist Association of Cardiff and Penarth has offered to take over the building, pro- vided I give up my pastorate." "Do you think you have been fairly dealt with P" "CEortainly not. I consider that the com- mittee has dealt with me in a. very un-Chris- tianlike manner-I can't put any other con- struction upon it. I feel that I am being very hardly dealt with, considering that I have been identified with the Church here since its start, and that. 1 managed to raise the money for the chapel school, receiving between JE500 and J6400. I have worked hard in the neighbourhood, and it is simply scandalous that [ should be so arbitrarily dealt with." What does your congregation number?" "We started with a little mission in Broad- way, and I have worked the congregation up to <J0 odd. Some time ago they gave me a shof' holiday, and since I have returned the attendance seems to be improving a little." "Iiov, old are you, Mr. SrhaSer?" "I am 56 years of age, and have been about fifteen years in Cardiff." Do you think the congregation would improve if a younger pastor was appointed ?" There might be a revival for a time, but there will not be an increase of spiritual life and growth as long as men look to men merely. If the asociation had sent someone to help me they would have shown a more Christian- like spirit than they have done." "Is it a fact that they have offered to make arrangements by which your resignation of the pastorate would not result in any pecuniary loss to you ?" The only offer I received was one from Mr Richard Cory to pay me 3s. a week if I took up mission work, and to provide me with a book which he suggested I might take round to gentlemen likely to follow his example. "I presume you have your supporters in the chapel ?" "Oh. yes." Then there is a split?" There is a good deal of unpleasantness, and practically a split." The Position of the Trustees. Several Sundays ago Mr. Dash, one of the trustees, announced in the chapel that a meet- ing would be called to con iuer the question of going over to the association and the ter- mination of the pastorate. The meeting was held, but Mr. Schaffer pointed out that it was not a legal one, and explained that such a meeting had, according to the trust deeds of the Church, to be announced from the rostrum two Sundays in succession, and to be held on the following Thursday. Accord- ingly. the meeting was adjourned, and the trustees asked the pastor to announce that a. meeting would be held. The pastor, so the trustees say, refused to do that, and it became necessary for one of them to do it, and on Sunday last and the Sunday previous Mr. Dash stated that the meeting would be held. On Thursday evening a prayer meeting was held in the schoolroom, and afterwards a private meeting of Church members. There were about 60 present. Mr. Frederick Dash was elected to the chair, and the questions were then discussed. The position of the trustees was explained at length to be as follows When it was decided to build the churdl the plans were drawn, and a sum of money wns borrowed. Then it became necessary to alter the plans, and further money was needed. The twelve trustees, all working men, borrowed J6500 from a bank, taking up a bill for three months. The bill fell due, and the Church authorities, it was alleged, were unable to meet it, and it was honoured by Alderman R. Cory until the question of joining the association was settled. The association had promised to take over the church, meet the bill, and all other lia- bilities-induding a bill of about £ 1,250— provided the pastorate was vacant, and also that if Mr. Schaffer would place himself un, n -f ivedly in their hands tliey would give him a position which would be better financially than the one he held. Following this Mr. Schaffer, it is said, objected to joining the association, giving as his reasons the fact that the price paid would be his dismissal, and he also remarked that he was not being dealt with fairly or in a Christianlike spirit. Ultimately, after a long discussion, a resolu- tion was passed by twenty votes to nine deciding to join the association, and a further resolution terminating the pastorate that night was also carried. A large number of those present did not vote, but it was stated that they were in favour of the resolution.

He was led to take this step from experience that h.. had had when a large number of school bmr 1 f'SeiI had been waiting to be heard, :u>d in front of which there were several cases r>" assault. It was not well for a class only [OJ hnically offending the law, such as sdhool lmird cases, where the mothers were perfectly decent and respectable women, who, perhaps, led beer slightly negligent or bad children who were not desirous of stepping up the ladder of knowledge, to compel them to come an. i herd for hours with thieves and pros- titutes and persons of the very vilest class.— After some discussion, the resolution was carried unanimously.—Various appointments were then made.
