UNEARTHING THE OLD GREY FRIARS CHURCH. Excavations are now Practically Com- plete and Some Interesting Discoveries Made. The archaeological investigations which have been carried on, under the direction of the Marquess of Bute, by Mr. Fowler (of Messrs. Kempson and Fowler) in the gardens of Cardiff Castle, east of the North-road, for over twelve months have now been so far consummated that Mr. PLAN OP ARCADE COLUMN. Fowler has been able to prepare a complete plan of the old Grey Friars Church, all traces of which had remained hidden from view for so long a period. As mentioned in these columns some few months ago, two small houses were five centuries ago founded at Cardiff, one. the Black Friars, by Richard de Clare, "without the west gate" the other, the Grey Friars, without the north gate," by Gilbert de Clare, son of the nobleman already men- PART OF CAP. -I tioned. There is also reason to believe that a priory of Benedictines existed in the town. The site of the Black Friars (within the castle grounds, on the borders of the Taff) has been cleared by the marquess and preserved for future generations, but the exact position of the Grey Friars was until recently a mystery. On Speed's quaint plan of Car- diff, drawn up three centuries ago, the Black Friars is distinctly marked, but there is no trace of the companion house, though a residence of considerable pretensions appears, perhaps the mansion of the Her- berts. Prior to the building of the latter the dissolution of the monasteries had taken place, and the only use to which the Grey Friars remained to be put was the contribu- tion of its hallowed stones to build the mansion of the Herberts and the tiny houses which did duty for the Cardiff of that day. The excavations were commenced in the immediate vicinity of the Herbert ruins, and the discoveries made last autumn were related and illustrated at that time in our columns. But, though the domestic part of the Grey Friars was thus laid bare, not a trace of the church appeared, and the ex- cavators were about giving up in despair when their perseverance was rewarded by the unearthing of several arcade piers and other fragments, which left no doubt whatever of the scene of operations being the site of ARCH MOULD. I a late thirteenth or early fourteenth century church, of greater magnitude than the present fabric of St. John's. A "Western Mail" reporter on Wednes- day had an opportunity of inspecting the plan of the church prepared by Mr. Fowler, and Mr. Fowler supplied the "Western Mail" man with the following particulars: -The nave is 112ft. 6in. long by 32ft. wide, and the north and south aisles are 14ft. wide. The total width of the church is 61ft., and the chancel is 30ft. wide. The length, however, cannot be given, as there are at present greenhouses erected over the east end. The arcade has been clearly outlined from portions of moulding found during the excavations. Up to the top of the capitals from the ground the measure- ment would be 22ft. 9in., and about 45ft. to the apex of the arches. The piers are 29ft. apart in the clear. Mr. Fowler is to be heartily congratulated upon the satisfactory issue of his labours, and the discovery is certainly one of the most interesting ever made by archaeological investigators in the Principality. CARDIFF ALHAMBRA. New Music-hall for the Town to be Ready Shortly. A few weeks ago we announced that steps were being taken by a. syndicate to acquire the Grand Theatre in Westgate-street, Cardiff, and converting it into a first-class music-hall and theatre of varieties. The preliminaries I having been satisfactorily arranged, a company I was on Thursday registered for the purpose of taking over the theatre, which is to be called the Cardiff Alhambra. The services of Mr. George Harrington, late of the Philhar- monic Music-hall, Cardiff, and now of the Terminus Hotel, have been secured under agreement as managing director. The company will take over the property early in December, when it appears some special attractions may be expected. The capital of the company is fixed at £2,500 in 500 shares of R5 each, and we are informed a great number of well-known local gentlemen promise to join in the matter, and that it is expected the whole of the capital will be taken up privately. The first subscribers are :—Messrs. George Harring- ton, E. J. Clarke, Edward J. Fletcher, H. Samuel, Charles Clarke, A. E. Dunckley, and John Weaver, all of Cardiff. In accordance with the articles of association, the first direc- tors are nominated by the subscribers to the memorandum and articles of association. The company was registered by Messrs. Morgan and Scott, the solicitors, and we learn that Mr. C. E. Dovey (Messrs. Clarke and Dovey) has been appointed auditor.

A TEMPTING OFFER Declined by a Member of the Welsh i Ladies' Choir. Miss Rachel Annio Jenkins, of FerndaJe, ] who accompanied the Welsh Ladies' Choir s to America, received, so a correspon- dent informs us, a grand offer about a. fortnight ago. While the choir were in Mahandy City, Pennsylvania, Miss Jenkins was waited 1 upon by a well-known American concert agent, ] who sought to secure her consent to go on a I tour in the Eastern, Southern, and Western ] States. The tour was to last a year, and the salary was to be 1,200dols. (or about JB240) and all expenses. The agent said he had heard Miss Jenkins sing at two of the concerts given by the choir, and declared that if she would but I stay in the States her fortune would be made. But the tempting offer had to be refused, Miss Jenkins declaring that she could not live apart from her numerous friends in Wales. The young lady, it should be stated, sang as a soloist in nearly all the concerts given by the choir.

FOUR HUNDRED YEARS OLD. A Holly Tree in North Wales Thirty Feet Round. Colonel Lloyd-Verney writes to the Times" from Clochfaen, Llanidloes4' May I ven- ture through your columns to describe a holly tree within ten paces of my house (which is 1,040ft. above the sea), which I venture to think is the largest in Great Britain ? I have in my possession a report which was made on it in January, 1836, and at that time the tree 'measured in circumference above the roots thereof 27ft. 6in., and estimated to be 60ft. in height, and is very branchy, and the general opinion is that it is 400 years old.' The circumference of the tree now is 30ft., and its height 43ft., and it has sixteen Broughton, 22nd Aug., 1756, which is almost 7in. and 8ft. 2in. It covers a circle, the diameter of which is 54ft., and its branches have numerous initials and dates cut on them, those which can be still deciphered ranging from 1700 to 1864. The most legible is that of J. Brought on, 22nd Aug., 1736, which is almost as clear as the day on which it was cut. Many" of the branches are half eaten through with rot, and I have had all the sixteen supported by iron rods. The tree still shows great vitality, each year bringing forth numerous young shoots. It is rather curious that on the opposite side of the valley is another large holly tree, which measures 17ft. 6in. in circum- ference.
