OSWESTRY.
OSWESTRY. A CURIOUS COLLECTION.—Six weeks ago a man named John Pryce Moss, a labourer, was admitted very ill to the Oswestry Workhouse, and there remained till Friday last, when he died. It was found after his death that he had at his home several large boxes, which were taken possession of by the Union Authorities, and on being opened, dis- closed one of the most extraordinary collections of miscellaneous articles ever presented to mortal eyes. The following are a few of the articles discovered:— Eight or nine pounds of common white pebbles, known as !'jackstones." eight or nine pounds of nails wrapped up in small parcels, a large quantity of different sorts of nuts, a sword, about 24 walking- sticks, finished and unfinished, a large number of silk pocket-handkerchiefs, about 70 tobacco pipes, eight or nine pounds of string in small pieces, stockings, gloves, razors, some old-fashioned gaudy pieces of cloth for waistcoats, cloth ready for making up into suits, old pieces of brass and iron, books, the whole forming a most extraordinary collection. It was known in the neighbourhood that the old man had these boxes, and a good deal of curiosity had been shown as to what the contents might be, but although some people professed to know, it is probable that no one was really aware of what the boxes contained, as the old man was very silent on the point. He was always rather an eccentric character, and had lived in the neighbour- hood for many years. SINGULAR FATAL ACCIDENT.—An adjourned inquest was held on Monday, at Oswestry, before Dr. Lewis, borough coroner, upon the body of Andrew Hayes, aged 16, whose parents live at Vron, near Ellesmere. On Friday evening, shortly before eight o'clock, he was requested by Mr. Kynaston, a farmer and butcher, living at the Pant, to hold his horse, which was standing near the Smithfield. The lad, it appears, got on the animal's back while Mr. Kynaston was away. The animal reared and fell clean back, with the lad under him. The unfortunate youth was instantly killed. A verdict of li Accidentally killed was returned.
RUTHIN.
RUTHIN. SUCCESS OF A LOCAL F ARMER.- W' e are pleased to learn that Mr. W. Kellet, of Plas Newydd. near Ruthin, has won the premium of t- 2 given by the Denbighshire and Flintshire Agricultural Society for the best cultivated farm within the Society's district. Mr. Thomas Rigby, a thoroughly qualified gentleman to judge in these matters, reported as follows:—I place Mr. W. Kellet, Plas Newydd, Ruthin, in the place of honour as winner of the premium of your Society. Mr. King, Bodynngharad Mr. Lloyd, Eaton House, Wrexham; Mr. J. T. Dutton, Saltney Mr. Robinson, Bryn Goleu and the St. Beuno's College Farm, all stand very near the winner, and cannot be too highly commended. Two other farms were withdrawn from the com- petition." Mr. Kellet is one of the most enter- prising of our local farmers, being for one thing the purchaser of Mr. Walter Peter's self-binding reaping machine. We sincerely congratulate him on his success.

BIRDS AND THE ECLIPSE.—Although the scientific results of the observation of the solar eclipse in Germany are insignificant, some interest- ing reports are given of the effects upon the lower animals of the untimelv obstruction of the sun. Forresters assert that the birds, which had already begun to sing before the eclipse took place, became of a sudden quite silent, and showed signs of disquiet when darkness set in. Herds of d-er ran about in alarm, as did the small-footed game. In Berlin a scientific man made arrangements for observations to be made by bird dealers of the conduct of their feathered stock, and the results are found to deviate considerably. In some cases the birds showed sudden sleepiness, even though they had sung before the eclipse t ok place. In other cases great uneasiness and fright were observed. It is noticable that parrots showed far more susceptibility than canaries, becommg totally silent during the eclipse, and only returning very slowly to their usual state. A TERRIBLE FATE.—The White Star steamer Britannic brings the news that a strange disaster has befallen the people on board a vessel called the Sara. This unluckly craft, while sailing between certain ports, was struck by a heavy sea, and cap- s zed. But as America's most famous novelist would have described the position of the ship, she aftfr- wards turned turtle." In other words she floated keel upwards. On board the Sara when she thus inverted her natural position on the water were, in addition to the captain and his crew, the captain's wife, children, and niece, as well as the superin- tendent of the Baltimore Copper Mills at Santa Rosa. After such a disaster it might have been anticipated that none would have survived to tell the story of the terrible mishap. The captain and four of the crew, however, contrived in some un- explained way to get upon the bottom of the vessel, and there they managed to maintain their hold for a long time apparently, for it was not until mad- dened by thirst that two of the sailors ended their sufferings by plunging into the sea, where they were instantly devoured by sharks. So far the story, extraordinary though it is, seems intelligible enough. But there has been some misunderstanding as to the means taken to support life by those who remained clinging for eight days to the wreck. The account before us mentions the capture of turtles as having supplied them with something from which sustenance could be derived. No doubt turtles are capable of furnishing famishing mariners with nourishment; but it must be confessed that we should not have expected to find them in company with sharks. Whatever may have been the means taken to prolong life, it was not successful in all cases, as the terrible fate of the two sailors sufficiently proves. WHAT A MAN FANCIES WHEN IN DRINK.—At the Hammersmith police-court on Tuesday, Jas. Frank Darton, of 109, Portobello-road, Notting-hill, was charged with assaulting Annie West, who lived in the same house. The complainant said she was walking down the Ladbroke-grove-road, when the prisoner came np, and without any prococation. struck her a violent blow behind the right ear. A constable who was standing near at once took him into custody. The prisoner said he was excited in consequence of complainant calling his wife names. The complainant: I don't know you. The prisoner Why you Jive in the same house. The constable said the prisoner was the worse for drink. Mr. Curtis Bennett said that men fancied all sorts of things when they were in drink. They fancied they were being abused when they themselves were the abusers. He fined the prisoner 20s., or 14 days.

tmg Ores and Concentrating Gold.- problem, as regards combined efficiency una bconomy, has at last been practically solved bv Messr. blivv I °f F-' °^at RuSSeil Streei> Blooms- buiy London, who have designed and patented a sper ialls constructed furnace and process, which at once becomes the master of the situation by converting rebellious mineral mi instances containing Gold, Silver, Copper, Tin, Sulphur. Arsenic, &c., into a state of bondage, or, more correcth speaking, by inducing the hitherto worthless elements to become skilful working adjuncts, inasmuch that the sulphur ayid arsenic, contained in mineral veins to such an extent as to gain the world-wide appellation of "refractory pyrites" are by the Inventors made not only submissive as servants but highly serviceable as fuel. Everyone with the least Knowledge of the subject knows that the elimination of metals from their ores, refractory or otherwise, depends mainly upon the groundwork, or first stage of calcination" in roasting or preparing the ores for the numerous addi- tional, and, up to the present epoch, separate smelting, refining, and concentrating processes which must of necessity follow. The Patentees take advantage of the burning powers contained in the sulphur to calcine and chloriaise simultaneously in one furnace, or, in other words to convert the salts of the metals from insnlubles into solubles with the minimum of expense. It is therefore not surprising that independent scientists eulogise the merits of an invention which certainly deserves more to be said in its favour than our limited spa.ee will afford. BENSON'S MEDICINE BENSON'S C. K. BENSON & Co., IVRBSHAS AMJ ostotbv, THE EFFECTS ARE PERMANENT. A WONDERFUL STATEMENT, SHOWING THAT THE BENEFICIAL EFFECTS OF "WARNER'S SAFE CURE" ARE NOT TEMPORARY, BUT PERMANENT. THE objection is often made that the beneficial effects of proprietary medicines are only temporary, and that the disease returns as soon as the use of the medicine is discon- tinued. To meet this objection in the case of "Warner's Safe Cure," we give below a single one of the thousands of confirmed testimonials in our possession, showing per- manency of effect several years after the cure was wrought. Mr. J. Hiscock, station-master of Taff Vale Railway Station, Wales, writing under date of JULY 31,1882, says: —" Having for years suffered from kidney trouble, which ended in abscess of that organ, resulting from inflammation. with a copious flow of pus, I purchased about 15 bottles of Warner's Safe Cure,' the contents of 13 only of which I have taken. It brought away about two ounces of stone; the pus has ceased to appear, the pain has vanished, the water is now clear, and I believe it has effected a complete cure. I have long and fairly tried some of the ablest medical men in South Wales, but they failed to treat the case success- tally, one of them remarking that medical science had failed to find a remedy for confirmed kidney disease." Writing under date of APRIL 27,1886, this gentleman says It is now nearly four years since I discontinued the use of Warner's Safe Cure,' and I have had no relapse of kidney trouble, have seen neither stone, gravel, or pus during that period, no return of the bad, heavy pain in the region of the kidneys which troubled me for years before I began the use of Warner's Safe Cure.' In my case the cure has been thorough and permanent, and I doubt not it will be in others similarly afflicted, if a fair trial is accorded it, sy Yours faithfully, "Station Master Nu.tngation Station, Taff Vale Railway, Treiuirris, E.S.O. Glamorganshire, Wales." Thousands of testimonials like the above can be shown, proving beyond the shadow of a doubt, that the beneficial effects of" Wiirller'S Safe Cure" are permanent. This permanency of power over disease gives it the most exalted rank, and in this particular it has no equal. Read the statement of Mr. Hiscock again, and then answer for your self: Do yon prefer to suffer, or will you give thorough iriai to a remedy that has proved a blessing to so many many thousands ?
