THE Managing COR mittee of the Merthyr Library respectfully beg leave M nyfte tJrf^Tattention of their Fellow-Townsmen, and of the Gentlemen connected with this town and neighbourhood, to a project which they have for some time past had in contemplation. Literary Institutions are natural developments .of the march of civiliza^fom; both the products and instruments of sound social progress. Among these Pulflic Sbr^Jes necessarily occupy a prominent position. Such Institutions naturally attract to tj* £ mselvartlie most brilliant intelligence, and the more cultivated minds of their respective localttife. |Hte Mmbars therefore, from the superiority of their mental and moral characters, and iromjfne groatiff^suuiumess, variety, nd extent of their information, natyrally become the leaders of thought iu^nieiiy^everal circles; and in an acre whose every movement and agency tends to widen the area of pojuical power, and when dangers, irom crude views and ill-digested knowledge, incrense in proportion to the extention of popular influence, it becomes the bonnden duty of wise and thoughtful mcn to increase the number of such influential and be aeficial agents to aid and encourage all Institutions that have for their object, to purity and elevate the minds of the people at large; to render the best Works in every department of Science and Art easily nccessible to all classes of the community; and to diffuse a knowledge of the most substantial, instructive, and healthy literature, of past. and present times, among the teeming masses of populous localities. Actuated by these motives; and with the assistance of the Ironmasters and their Fellow- Townsmen, a few zealous persons founded Hie MERTIIYR LJBRAHV in the winter ot 1846 from that time forth thô Institution has not only maintained, its ground, but has also been steadily pro- gressive and self-supporting; its regular members now exceed one hundred and twenty; the shelves contain upwards of two thousand volumes of the most approved Works in Science, Art, History, Poetry, Fiction, and General Literature; these are all rendered accesible to the humblest readers at a charge of only Eighteenpencc per Quarter, or rather less than Three-half-pence per wefk; and the Committee have the ion to observe that the value of the Institutions is so far appreciated, that fro-n iwenfy-five to thirty volumes are taken out nightly. Tiie ^adiug News- papers of the day and several of the most approved weekly and monthly periodicals are regularly laid upon the Reading Room table. v But the usefulness of the Instr ution is limited by the want of space. Deterred by the faIlure Of more ambitious projects, the original promoters contented themselves with renting a comparatively small room. This has now proved inadequate to the requirements of the Institution, and of their nightly crowds of readers; their book-cases, which occupy all the available space, are insufficient to contain the books already in the Library, and which are steadily increasing in number; for the same reason, they are unable to use a of Globes, a fine Telescope, a very good Microscope, and other instruments, the use of which they have acquired by the amalgamation with them of the George-town Philosophical Society, founded in 1802; and they are unable to display their Maps, among which are Ordnance Maps o't the Merthyr District, geulogicelly coloured, and a very hand- some Map of America, recently presented by THOMAS FALCONER, ESQ. They have therefore resolved to appeal to their Fellow-Townsmen to assist them in erecting a suitable building for this purpose' and uaviug fructified the talents given to them on a former occa- sion, they are encouraged by the success of their past stewardship to expect a liberal amount of public support. They calculate that about £ 000 will suffice for the erection of a building suitable for a Library and Reading Room, and to form the nucleus of a Museum; and they propose to raise that amount by nceans of a .JOINT STOCK COMPANY, under the LIMITED LIABILITY ACT, in shares ot £ 1 each. They believe tlHtI. the credit of Merthyr itself is involved in this proposal. A far more ambitious project might justifhbly claim encouragement from the wealthy inhabitants of so large, populous, ami important [I pl:we as this; and when several of the neighbouring towns, especially Neath, Swansea, and Carm:: ihct), already have noble Institutions ot this kind, they feel assured that this appeal will elicit « p and a hearty response from the people of Meithyr. the Committee have much pleasure in announcing that 1-1.
