♦_ —-i— A WELSH GHOST.—Abefnant, near Aberdare, is at present in the enjoyment of a ghost, locally certified as the spirit of the deceased wife of a workman who had threatened her hnsband before her death that she would haunt him if he ill-treated her children, and who seems to have had reason for keeping her word. The spiritual influence is chiefly manifested by jugs, chairs, and tables jumping about in the house; but the ex-parish constable, who was sent for to lay the ghost, was made the subject of a different manifestation. In reply to a solemn request, he received a blow with a stone, and was laid himself instead of laying the ghost. The police were sent for, and they tied the deceased's doughter'a hands, thinking she was at the bDttom of the affair, but the latest accounts say the ghost continues its manifes- tationSk THE ALABAMA CLAIMS.—There is a point whiclil we sometimes forget, and that is the very different light in r which the alleged conduct of England may ftppeaf to European international lawyers and to our own. We have a theory of our Government, but it is not the theory which generally prevailed in Europe at the time the re- bellion broke out. The whole tendency of our diplomacy for years before secession was to impress European Powers with the idea of the possibility of secession. It was not so much the compact nation as the collection of states that they saw in our Republic. We may conlldentlr point now to our Union, and show the Woi*id what it means. But the questioh ife Uttt ftnat tbe Union is and was, but what it steteibbd to be to England in 1861. Now let us retaetobefr that. in appealing to any European Power as afciter, we appeal to one which must regard the ques- tion of the recognition of the. Confederacy from the European, that is to say from the English, and not the American, standpoint. That arbiter would admit our interpretation and assertion of our position to-day, but it might acquit England of malevolence or hostility in the blunder made in 186L. It might even find ground fob justifying England for betieviiig that State sovereignty was a doctrine of the American system, and accordingly for recognising the Soutb.-New York Times. WILLS AND BEQUESTS -The will of Henry Blundell, Esq, of Devonshire Place, Belham, Surrey, who died December 27, 18C7, aged 79, was proved under £50,000 by his executors, Mr J. G. Lucy and Mr John Perry. The sum of £ 16,000 is divided among the following in. stitutions:—To the Billingsgate Ward Schools, the Fishmongers* and Poulterers' Institution, the London Orphan Asylum, the Church Missionary Society for the Propagation of the Gospel, Ragged School Union, Deaf and Dumb Asylum, Blind School; Idiot Asylum, Rei- gate, and the Consumption Hospital, £1,000 each; and to the Prayer-book and Homily Society, Trinitarian Bible Society, Town Missionary and Scripture Readers' Society, Protestant Association, London City Mission, Magdiilen Hospital, Asylum for Female Orphans, British and Foreign Bible Society, Foundling Hospital, and the Philanthropic Society, J6500 each. Legacies are bequeathed to relatives, friends, and old servants; and the residue to his executor, Mr John George Lucy. To the will of Mr W. Nicholson, manufacturing silversmith, of which on the 8th inst., we gave a list of bequests made by him to charitable institutions, we are now requested to add that out of the ultimate residue of his estate the executors are directed to pay, from the interest thereof, sums not exceeding P,20 per annum to poor silversmiths, as they shall In their discretion think fit .—Illustrated, London News. MURDEB.—On Sunday morning a gentleman's groom, who was passing by Cliff Common, at South Driffield, found a bundle, a bat, and a trowel, in the middle of the road, and a little farther, on the right hand side of the road, he picked up a thick hedgestake about four or five feet long, and bloody at one end. On further searching he discovered the body of a man In a ditch, nearly covered with water, his head only resting on the side of the drain. The arms were raised in an attitude of de- fence, and the bead of the deceased presented a horrible spectacle. In addition to a dreadful wound on the left side of the eye, which was sufficient to cause death, there were frigntful wounds at the back of the head, on the chin, and on the right side of the head dividing the ecr. An alarm was immediately raised, and the rural police, together with several farmers, were immediately on the spot. The body was dragged out of the water and con- veyed to the Cross Keys public house in South Driffield, in which township this particular piece of the Cliff-road is situated. The deceased was dressed as a working man, and looked much like a bricklayer, but not of-a common order, every part of his attire being good. He was a young man of about twenty-eight years old, well-built, and of middle height. The only clue to his name was obtained from two letters which were found in hie pockets. One, addressed from Scarbro' to I Mrs DriscoJl, Tottenham, Middlesex,' began My dear Mother,' and ended, 'Your affectionate son, Daniel Driscoll.' The only money found in his possession was twopence, and though he had an Albert chain, there was no watch, and to every appearance he had been robbed. An inquest was held on Monday, in South Driffield, by Mr Taylor, coroner, from Wakefield, when evidence to the above effect was given, and the inquest was then adjourned until Tuesday, the 10th inst.
