NARBERTH.
NARBERTH. Our readers will be pleased to learn that Dr Timothy Lewis, of this town. has just obtained the highest position in the examination for the British Medical Service just concluded. There were 75 candidates. Dr Lewis was a medallist in Clinical Medicine at the London University in 1866, and took his degree of M.B. and M.S. with honours in 18G7. NARBBRTH PETTY SESSIONS—These session* were held in the Police Station, on Thursday, the 20th inst., before J. L. G. P. Lewis, and J. M;Child, Esqrs -Potioe Sergeant Edward Irving, assistant relieving officer for Nnrberth Union, v. John Rowe, James Retry, and George Thomas, three tramps, for applying for casual relief, at the same time having sufficient money in their possession for their support. When asked at the Police Station, they stated they bad only two pence each. On being searched by the police there was found in each of their neckcloths sixpence in silver concealed, and th^re was also bread with each sufficient for one day. After the case had been heard the three were committed for one month each with hard labour.
C A R M A ITTITEN?
C A R M A ITTITEN? m LLANBOIDY PLOUGHING MATCH. This annual contest took place on Thursday, the 13th instant, in a field belonging to Mr J. Morris, Wernberni, Llanboidy. Hitherto the competition had been confined to those residing within the Hundred of Derllys; but this year the committee very magnanimously threw it open to Great Britain, and a glorious meeting, brought about by the fostering care of the stewards, Messrs J. Phillips, Castell Draeuog, D. Pictos, Cilanw, D. Thomas, Bailymawr, and E. Jones, Ffynonfoida, was the result. Mr R. Howell, Gellydogin, faithfully discharged the duties of a secretary, while the name of Mr T. R. O. Powell, as timekeeper, conferred not a little dignity upon the meeting; but we regret to say that this gentleman, to whom these gatherings owe their being, was not at his post. As he was not present last year too, we are afraid Mr Powell is gradually loosing that interest which he used to take in these unquestionably good meetings, but which are, in his absence, like a ship without a cap- tain. We hope Mr Powell will be more faithful in future, and then the Llanboidy Ploughing Match will stand firm, and its first class ploughmen will be many. The parish of Llanwinio has this year again, as it has done now for several years, turned out the first prizeman, and a more skilful and plucky lot of young men than those of this parish are not to be found amongst Cam- bria's hardy sons of toil. The following are the names of the successful com- petitors, and the amount of the first prize in each class— £ 2 53 ur competing, two prizes, i? irst prize, l8nK £ Thomas, Cilgrymman Faob, Llanwinio 2nd D. Perkins, Dwrdy, Llanfallteg Second Class—Ten competing, five prizes. First prize, £ 1. 1st J. Phillips, Cilherning, Llanboidy 2nd T. Phillips, Blaentrafle, Llanwinio 3rd D. John, Llwyncrwn, Llanginning 4th B. Evans, Sarlas, Llanfallteg ftth J. Lewis, Wernddu, Cilmaenllwyd Third Class-Eighteen competing, six prizes. First prize, 15s. 1st T. Thomas, Pantyrhas, Llanboidy 2nd J. Owens, Llwynderw, Henllan 3rd M. Morris, Cileganol, Cilmaenllwyd 4th S. Owen, Blaenderwen, Llanfirnach 6th S. Owen, Cilgrymman Fawr, Llanwinio 6th W. Thomas, Cile Isaf, Cilmaenllwyd. The judges were Messrs W. Evans, Castell lJwyd, R. Griffiths, Cile Isaf, and R. Reymond, Uwcbllaw-yr- Eglwys, all adepts in the art of ploughing, but each competitor bad done hiu work 80 well that it was not by any means an easy thing to say which, was the best. However, we believe that the judges, guided by their judgment only, did at last arrive at a just and fair con- clusion, and that merit was rewarded according to its due. In delivering their judgment the judges highly commended the ploughing of D. Griffiths, Pantyman, Llanwinio, and added that he would have been entitled to the first prize in the third class had his furrows been of the proper measures. The judges, stewards, and others dined at the Maesgwyn Arms in the evening.

HAVERFORDWEST PENNY READINGS. SIB,-At the 7th of the Penny readings held at the Tabernacle School room on Wednesday evening last, I was thoroughly disgusted at the conduct of some of the audience who style themselves young gentlemen. They go for no other purpose than to annoy those who ap- preoiate these entertainments. It is a great pity that a stop should not be put to it, and I should recommend that the names of these so-called young gentlemen should be publicly made known, as such conduct is calculated to put a stop to such amusing and instructive re-unions. THE ABYSSINIAN FORCE. We learn, by communi- cations received by the last mail, that the troops are all healthy. The field hospitals are in operation and in good condition. The sanitary state of the camp at Zoulla is a good. There is plenty of water, obtained by the tubular American wells. Two stone piers have been erected, and a condenser is at work on each at the land- ing place. The story about the enormous cost of the water-2s a gallon-seems to be a canard.
