No one; eept his father in the warmth of parental affection, lie Merely reprimands mo for not consulting hiin, ere I trans- mitted my letter to your care. Yes, Be is the dignified knight, the honest stitch that would clip off what his profound acutnen conceives to b6 excrescencies. This brings to my tnmd a tale that I read when at school. One of the sons of the Muses, being desired to lavish his encomiums upon a certain person, wrote a copy of verses, in which he pushed Panegyric so fair that he thought modesty would be offended. When God fry perused it, he told the poet that it was very fine, very fine indeed, and very true but you have taken no notice of my military genius." Sir," said the bard, I never knew you had any pretence of that kind." And this is my apology to the thimble. To insult the modesty of some would be a Herculean task. 1 can assure him that I was blissfully ignorant and I the less deplore my ignorance, because I have scruples respecting his aptitude to learn, much less to teach." I am prepared to dispute his claims, and prostrate all his lofty pretensions he has over-estimated his talents, and flattered fiis vanity and I justly infer that the stature of his soul resembles his corporeal size. Is climb up it" according to the rules of syntax ? Whether ho uses up" as an adverb or a preposition, it is purely superfluous. "Climb" itself implies to ascend. Is the following^sentence happily expressed:—" That it would be wise on his part to band oyer bis compositions, before sending them to the press, to some knight of the thimble, who," &c. ? Now, let the Pupil condescend to instruct his teacher; thus :—" Before ^nding his compositions to the press, it would be wise on "is part to hand them over to some knight of the thimble, who," &c. The words ought to be consecutively arranged, nnd the parts which relate to each other should follow. I beseech you, sir, and your noble-minded correspondents, to sympathise with me, until I shall have acquired skill in the art of compression. Then, liko Titus Short," I shall embody a microcosm of thought in every word. A voice from the centre of the town, Is he so concise and compre- hensive?" Between you and him, what induced him to date his letter from Narberth ? Though the inhabitants of Haverfordwest would not bewail his exit hence, it behoves him to ascertain whether the friends would b3 willing that he should become a resident there. If it had been dated from the metropolis of England, my astonishment would decrease. Having been there as a nocturnal visitant," he might have committed himself under the impression that he was still there, prostrating Virgil and Homer at his feet. There is a nut for you, Mr. Short—crack it. Pshaw away with such cozenage. His reference to the days of juvenility is laughably ridiculous. A man going to steal apples where there were none to be found Would that all our robbers were so deluded. Granting that it was infoliated, it did not follow that it bore fruit. His conclusion was groundless and illegitimate. What a picture does a chagrined, peevish, morose reader represent. According to his own showing he is a compound of conceit and ill-humour. The man is not born who can extort his approbation if he should approve, he will conceal it it is more congenial with his base mind to be silent than to commend, lie finds the most unenviable satisfaction in creating, discovering, magnifying fit-Lilts. lie cavils with tho design, the colouring, and the finishing of every performance that has the misfortune to come under his roof. Verily, he is an object of commiseration. Ile must pass his time in perfect misery, for all the attempts of genius in this imperfect state have no attractions fur him. To coun- terpoise his spleen, I trust that candid readers wul multiply. In them I behold tho gentleman and scholar. Convinced ot 'the arduous struggle by which authors attain reputation, they reluctantly censure what their correct judgment cannot approve. Yours, &c., Haverfordwest, March 27, 13-14. ANTI-FALSUM. TO THE MEMBERS OF THE HAVERFORDWEST AMATEUR HARMONIC SOCIETY. GENTLEMEN,—While sitting in my "sanctum," chewing. the cud of sweet and bitter fancy, imagination, in the mean- time carrying me where she would, Ingratitude more strong than traitors' arms," prompted me to think my own lot a hard one, and while in tbis vein-I thought myseit the most unhappy of beings. But a gleam of sunshine stole across my mind's eye as I contrasted the destitute condition of thousands in our own highly favored land, who when they rise in the morning from an uneasy couch, know not whe; e they shall rest their heads, when darkness shall again cov(r the earth much lets, how the necessaries requisite to sustam life may be obtained. My better feelings immediately set about arranging a plan for ameliorating the condition of mankind but the futility of attempting anything in so wide a fielJ, at once struck me as being out of the power of any one mortal, were he possessed cf the wealth of Crcesus. Reducing the calibre of my view to a focus more consistent with reason, I directed my attention to those of my own ne'ghbourhood, whose sufferings were of the greatest magni- tude. My feelings of sympathy were instantly cnMsted on behalf of the bereaved sufferers at Landshipping, where no less than forty human beings were in an instant hurried before their supreme Judge, leaving more than double their number to deplore their untimely end, and who by this bereavnient arc left in the most indigent circumstances. Now, gentlemen, although your philanthropy has lately been most successfully exercised in the concert which you gave yet, I am confident, could you be prevailed on to do the like kindness for those poor sufferers, that the public would rally round you, as there are hundreds who are not in a situation to give a sum in It public subscription, would, nevertheless still be anxious to throw into so laudable a treasury. Entreat- ing your forgiveness for thus publicly addressing yon, and hoping that) 0:1 will take the matter into your consideration. I remain, Gentlemen, Yours most respectfully, AMICUS.
