■» ABERDOVEY REGATTA. The brilliant weather on Monday was doubtless the means of inducing a large attendance of visitors at Aberdovey, as numerous persons assembled at that pleasant little watering place for the purpose of witnessing the regatta, which was held in the estuary of the I)yfi. The weather h: s of late been so ex- tremely unfavourable that w hen it became evident, at an early hour on the day fixed for the regatta, that a change of temperature was likely to super- vene, numbers of tourists staying at the adjacent watering places of Aberystwyth and Barmouth, and similar favoured localities, eagerly availed them- selves of the opportunity afforded to them by the various excursion trains which were run by the Cambrian Railway Company to visit the town. On arriving at Aberdovey the main body of those pre- sent betook themselves to the quay, from whence an excellent view of the proceedings was to be obtained. The efficient services of Mr A. J S. Corbet, of Ymysymaengwyn. hfid been secured as commodore. That gentleman having kindly consent.,d to under- take the duties of the office. The following gentle- men officiated as judges—Capt. Fitzroy, Mr R. E. C. Kettle, and Mr D. R. Pughe, and it is but the merest justice to say that they discharged their functions with signal impartiality. and that their awards gave the most universal satisfaction. The arrangements fur the regatta were carried out by the committee, which consisted of Messrs Cuckson, 31. Cockin, W. Pemberton, D. H. Lewis, Edward Jones (Cambrian House), and the Secretary, Mr H. F. Owen. We believe no regatta has been held at Aberdovey for several years and. therefore something may be excused on the ground of inexperience in con- nexion with the practicability of the arrange- ments which were in some respects lament- ably deficipnt. It would be highly desirable that in any future aquatic competitions which noiy be held, all entries for the several races should be made some few days before the "event" comes off, in order to admit of programmes being printed, j afford i ng complete information respecting the names ot the entered boats, ot the competing crews, and similar details. It would be superfluous to dilate upon the diminished interest with which the pro- ceedings are necessarily viewed by the spectators unless this is done the interest in the races, more especially on the part of visitors, being confined merely to the excellence displayed by the crews in in rowing or sailing, all personal and local interest in the -port being virtually debarred to non-resi- dents. It is true that programmes were printed, but they mainly furnished the conditions of the races and the amount of the prizes. With the exception, however, of the deficiency which has been indicated, the races were completely successful and if on a future occasion this matter is remedied the Aber- dover Regatta unquestionnbly promises well to become an excedingly popular gathering. The races commenced shortly before noon, two schooners, profusely adorned with bunting, being moored in the estuary, the one for the accommoda- tion of the commodore and judges, and the other for the Festiniog brass band, the members of which played a series of well-uhosen and sprightly airs throughout the day. Among those present on the commodore's boat were Mr and Mrs Corbet (Y nys- ymapngwyn), Mr and Mrs Stubbs (Londmi), Madame Gherlla (London), Mr Hodges. Master! StLibbi. aiid Miss and Master Oldfield (London), the Misses Kirkby (Towyn), together with the gentlemen who oiffciated us judges. The length of the course wae-ror sailing boats about two miles, and for rowing boats about half a mile. 1 he following was the 1st Race—First-class deck fishing boats, keelage not exceeding 35tt. IF 'TIS WORTH DOING,'TIS WORTH DOING WELL AND AT ONCE. To the Editor of the Aberystwyth Observer. SIR,—Somo time ago the residents of Railway- terrace, Poplar-row, and neighbourhood, signed a petition which was presented to the Town Council praying that the open water course running along Poplar-row, and in front of Railway-terrace might be covered over. A resolution was carried that tenders for the work should be sent in that day month, but whether they have been sent in or not I do not know, but no notice appears to have been taken of it. The subject was again brought before the Council ') u by our energetic councilman, Mr James, when it was again resolved that the work should be done at once, however, timn which waits for no man, not even dilatory councilmen, still passes on, and still the same open dnua is there, as dangerous as ever to our children and offensive to the olfactory nerves of the visitors and residents. Perhaps they will lock the si abie (.looi whon the iis stolon—wlicn children get drowned, which is not at all improbable in such weather as this. I should, and I think many more as well as myself would, be very much edified if we were to examine the reports of the meetings of the Council for the last twelve months noting the resolutions that have been passed, and how many of them liave been practically etirried one. I think all would come to the conclusion that there is a tremendous lot of talk with a very insignificant amount of work. Aug. 14th. LOOKER-ON.

PONTRH YDFEN DIGAID. LAMENTABLE FATALITY.—An inquest was held on at the Lisburne Arms, Pontrhydfendigaid, on Wed- nesday. before the coroner, John Rowland, Esq., on the body of Evan Jones, Cnwch, who died suddenly, on the 17th inst., in Bronmwyn Mine, from the effects of foul air. The deceased was 40 years of age, and leaves a widow and seven children to mourn his loss. The inquest commenced at four o'clock. The first witness called was Thomas Morgans, who worked in the same mine. He said: I knew the deceased, and on Monday I saw him condng to the niine. The deceased descended the shaft, together with his partner, William Jones, Tynewydd, and John Jones, Sychnant, and myself followed. It was p '.out half-past six o'clock. The deceased and his partner stopped where they worked, and we passed them and proceeded to our own work in the level. Ia a short time afterwards I heard one of them calling my partner, John Jones he went to them, and I was a'so called immediately afterwards. When I rcached the spot where they worked William Jones was leaning against the ladder of the shaft, and was very pale, but the deceased, Evan Jones, had pro- ceeded about seven yards up the ladder. I called to him, and asked hirn how he felt, and he answered that he did not fed very well. I was myself by this ti'ne so much affected by the air that I could not move. I called again to the deceased, and he said he felt himself worse than before. The other two men had by this time fallen down. I called a third time to the deceased, but received no answer. I remember nothing more, and how I came out of the shaft I can- not say.—The next witness called was Thomas W illiams, son of Captain John Williams, rpanager of the Brongwyn Mine. Mr Williams stated that he visited the mine occasionally, and on Monday went there on behalf of his father. At about ten o'clock he descended the mine, and reached a place which is called the adit level, which is about eighteen yards below the surface. He knocked at the adit, as usual, but received no answer. He went to the oflice, but there was no one there. He descended the shaft, and when about five yards from the bottom he came suddenly across a man's legs. He asked the man what he was doing there, but receiving no reply he groped about and found that the mail's head was hanging over a beam, and ascertained that he was dead. He then ascended, and proceeded to Bron- mwyn farm, for the purpose of procuring assistance. Mr Thomas Richards, the tenant of the farm, accom- pa-nied him back to the mine, but would not descend the shaft Witness then stated that he proceeded down the shaft himself, having first procured a light, but that when he arrived near the deceased the light went out. Witness procured additional help and again descended, and in a short time the four men were removed.—The jury, after a short interval, returned a verdict of Died from the effects of foul air." —————

THE SEASON. RARELY, perhaps, has Ab-rystwyth been the rvndezrous of so large a number of visitors as may be found here at present. The beach and promen- ade are filled daily with a crowd of eager holiday- makers, who appear to enjoy to the utmost the various amusements within their reach. The machines are beseiged every forenoon by groups of expectant bathers who "wait their time" with most exemplary patience, and no sooner is one relay disposed of than another is ready to take its place. The lovely adjacent scenery, too, is by no means neglected, and the proprietors of vans and cars must occasionally find it difficult to meet the requirements of the bands of visitors who seek to secure their vehicles, for it is stated that one day this week no less than a hundred and fifty excur- sionists drove to the Devil's Bridge, the falls of which all who have seen unhesitatingly pronounce to be unequalled in sublimity and beauty through- out the Principality. Perhaps the most numerous assemblage, however, is to be seen along the sea- shore in the cool of the evening, when the Terrace promenade is literally filled, and the graceful Promenade Pier is in no less a degree the centre of attraction. An improvement has recently been made on the Pier which unquestionably merits a word of commendation. The spirited proprietors have placed upon it a series of coloured glass lamps, which, when lighted at dusk produce a most e,-t, e pleasing and highly picturesque effect, while the friendly rivalry of the Town and Militia Bands greatly conduce to the general enjoyment. We have on a previous occasion referred to the desirability of establishing an Aberystwyth Regatta, and there is every reason to believe, from the suc- cess which has attended the recent aquatic fetes held at Barmouth and Aberdovey, that if a regatta were instituted with energy and j urlgment, the dforts of its promoters would be amply rewarded. We have no doubt that if proper representations were •r.ade to Mr Cattle, the indefatigable manager of the ambrian Railways Company, excursion trains from the surrounding neighbourhood would be at once arranged, and would tend to ensure the complete prosperity of the scheme. It has long been a matter of some surprise that short sea trips have not been available for those who wish to enjoy that pleasant recreation, and we fed certain that if a small steamer were chartered to convey excursionists, say, to Bardsey Island, the local sea service" would meet with geueral and hearty support. The Island possesses many attrac- tions for various classes. Its flora could not fail to interest the botanist; the ruins of its famous abbey, whose history has been related by Giraldus Cam- brensis, and by one of the pleasantest and quaintest of old English writers, the venerable Fuller, would draw the antiquarian and archaeologist to its shores while for patriotic Welshmen its charms are almost without number. To those who might make the trip for purposes of pleasure only, the voyage would form an agreeable variety; and if a series of sea excursions to Barmouth, Towyn, and other places, were also set on foot, the scheme would doubtless meet with rapid and sustained patronage. As a means of increasing in number the thoroughly UIl- paralelled attractions of Aberystwyth, we commend the proposal to those who possess facilities for car- rying the plan into operation.
