TO THE ELECTORS OF CARDIGAN, ABERYSTWYTH, LAMPETER, AND ADPAR. GENTLEMEN,— I hasten to return you my warmest thanks for the honour you have done me in this day electing me your representative in the House of Commons. It shall always be my endeavour to serve you to the best of my ability, having no other object in view than to promote the best interests of our county. a m, Gentlemen, Yours faithfully, DAYID DAVIES. Cardigan, February 3, 1874. TO THE INDEPENDENT ELECTORS OF THE UNITED BOROUGHS OF CARDIGAN. ABER- YSTWYTH, LAMPETER, AND ADPAR. GENTLEMEN.— -TTriTH feelings of deep regret, and after anxious T consideratiou, I have come to the conclusion of withdrawing my address, and of not offering my- self on the present occasion for the honour of repre- senting you in the Commons House of Parliament. I am now about to sever ties and associations which for the last eight years have entwined them- selves around my daily life. But putting aside all personal considerations. I felt that for the interests of the great Liberal party it was my duty not to endanger the seat by causing a division in our camp. Highly as I estimate the honour of a seat in the House of Common^, I set a still higher value on those great constitutional principles which have elevated Great Britain to the foremost rank among the nations. While on the one hand I shall always uphold the union between the Church and the State, and insist on the Bible having the foremost place in our schools, I shall, on the other hand, be ever in the front rank of those who uphold to the fullest extent the rights and the liberties of the people. I may also in fairness allude to my old opponent, and I will add friend, Mr Davies, of Llandinam, a gentleman of high integrity, who. as a Nonconform- ist, must necessarily enlist the sympathies of his co-religionists, and as a successful man of business has it in his power to develope the commercial re- sources of the United Boroughs. In bidding you farewell. I can assure you that I shall never cease to take a lively interest in the wel- fare of my old constituents, collectively and indi- vidually, and I shall ever remain, Your attached friend, THOMAS DAVIES LLOYD. Bronwydd, January 31, 1874. TO THE ELECTORS OF THE COUNTY OF CARDIGAN. GENTLEMEN,— THE present Parliament will this day be dissolved, and I lose no time in intimating to you that it is my intention to place my services again at your disposal, and I respectfully solicit a renewal of your confidence. I still hold the Principles upon which you elected me in 1868, and have, therefore, no fresh Political belief to propound to you. If it be your pleasure to re-elect me as your Re presentative in Parliament, I shall continue to giv" general support to a Liberal Government. e I hope at an early date to have an opportunity to explain my views more fully to you, And am, Gentlemen. Your obedient Servant.. EVAN M. RICHARDS. Brooklands, 26th January, 1874. TO THE ELECTORS OF THE COUNTY OF CARDIGAN. GENTLEMEN,— I BEG to offer myself as a candidate to represent you in the next Parliament. I am a Liberal Conservative in politics, and a lover of our old Constitution, which I desire to maintain unimpaired. If returned, I should vote for the re-adjustment of Local Taxation, which is at present a grievous bur- den on the farming interests. I am in favour of a Modification of the Income Tax (which should be regarded as a War Tax) with a view to its ultimate extinction. I am an advocate for the Education of the People, but consider that the Expense of Education should be more equally distributed than it is by the Educa- tion Act of 1870, and should include property not now rated. I am in favour of the Bible being read in Elemen- tary Schools, considering the Bible the root of all moral teaching, while at the same time I do not desire that the teaching of the Dogmas or Creeds of any Denomination should be enforced in Elementary Schools. Air Gladstone's Government, while deprecating War, and paying three million and a half of the tax- payers' money to the United States as a peace tax, rushes into an unjust war with Savages in Africa, the cost of which in life and money no one can fore- see. This war was never authorised by Parliament. I have the honour to remain, Gentlemen, Your faithful Servant, THOS. E. LLOYD. Coedmore, Cardigan, February 3rd, 1874. AT E T H 0 L W Y R SIR ABERTEIFI.
