ST. DAVID'S DAY. This week Welshmen all the world over have been celebrating the day of their patron Saint, Dewi Sant. It is a matter of comparatively small importance, as Judge Gwilym Williams well remarked at Pontypridd, on Tuesday, whether such a man as St. David ever actually existed or not. To us of the present day St. David is but the impersonation—probably an idealised impersonation-of all that is best and purest and noblest in our national life. The annual celebration serves to bring together those whom divergent creeds and political divisions keep apart during the year. The Churchman and Dissenter, the Tory and the Radical, on this day agree to sink their mutual differences, and remember only that they are the common inheritors of a noble language, of high traditions, and of many common aspira- tions. It is significant of the growth of the national spirit in Wales that year by year the popularity of the great national festival is continually in- creasing. Not the least hopeful of the signs of the times is the fact that the celebration of St. David's Day is not confined to one political party or to one or two of the many denomina- tions of Wales. Every patriotic Welshman is anxious to recognise, on one day of the year at least, that Wales has many great aspirations, in which all can join. It is a significant and a I hopeful sign aliso that, though Welshmen are beginning to understand and appreciate more and more the beauty and the power of their native tongue, and to be eager that it should receive due recognition not only in the public appointments in the Principality, but in our national system of education, they are more and .more throwing off the old exclusiveness and desire of isolation, which has done so much in the past to hamper and impede the progress of the Welsh people. The old cowardly proverb, Tri chynnyg i Gymro ac un i Sais" (" Three chances to the Welshman and one to the Englishman "), is no longer put forward in extenuation of a Welshman's short- comings. The cry of Wales for the Welsh" is but a libel by which the enemies of Welsh Nationalism are endeavour- ing to prejudice the cause of Wales in the minds of those who know not har aspirations. The spirit of the Welsh Nationalism of to-day is no craven spirit that dreads a fair contest on equal terms with any of the three sister nationalities. The Welsh Nationalism of to- day is self-reliant and self-respecting. It demands only that the Welsh should be placed on an equality with the Englishman or Scotch- man or Irishman that he should have as fair a start in the race of life as his rivals. He de- mands that he should be taught his own language in the schools which he maintains as the Englishman is taught his language in his own schools. The Englishman maintains a. Church which is the National Church of Eng- land the Welshman demands that he be not compelled to maintain a Church that he does not regard as his National Church. It has been recognised time after time that, as the circumstances of rural life in Ire- land are so different to those obtaining in England, the land system in Ireland should be so altered as to fit in with the differing circumstances of Irish life. Welsh- men demand that, as the conditions of Welsh life are different to those of England, the land laws should be adapted to the Welsh peasant's peculiar circumstances. Time was when the highest ideal and aim of English statesmen was to reduce all the nations they came into contact with into one dead level to Anglicise the institutions and the manners of the Scotch, and the Irish and the Welsh peoples. A Scotchman, King James the First, was the first to try this policy in Scotland. It was attempted to introduce into Scotland the Episcopal Church of England which has ever been the greatest medium for Anglicising every country wherein it has been established. The sturdy Scotch were, however, earnest enough, united enough, and strong enough to resist successfully the attempt, and the claims of Scotland to be regarded as a separate nationality, needing special legislation, have never since been denied.
